Former President of Brazil Dilma Rousseff is forced to cancel her visit to De Balie on October 23. She has been summoned to testify in a lawsuit as testimony for the defence on October 24. This is an obligatory summon, upheld by law, and the request to delay the date for her court appearance was denied.

De Balie regrets Rousseff’s cancellation and is currently investigating new data for a visit of the former president to Amsterdam.

At the invitation of the Amsterdam Collective for Democracy in Brazil and De Balie, on October 23, former president Dilma Rousseff will speak about politics, the role and challenges faced by women in politics, and democracy in Brazil. Rousseff was elected President of Brazil in 2010, becoming the first woman to hold office. She was re-elected in 2014 and held office until she was impeached in 2016 through what is regarded by many as a parliamentary coup orquestrated by right wing parties and their allies.

During the event Rousseff shares her personal experiences, her legacy and that of the Worker’s Party, her view on developments in Brazil under current President Jair Bolsonaro, and how to move forward.

After her speech De Balies’s senior editor Tim Wagemakers interviews Rousseff. There will be simultaneous interpretation available in Portuguese and English so that this event is open to all.
