SOLO

In Nederland wonen ruim drie miljoen mensen alleen. Dat aantal blijft groeien, zoals ook de eenpersoonshuishoudens. De verwachting is dat in 2050 de helft van alle huishoudens uit een persoon bestaat. Tijdens haar huidige project SOLO verkent fotografe Mascha Jansen de levens van singles. Twee maanden lang fotografeerde, interviewde en filmde ze singles in Japan, waar meer dan de helft van de bevolking alleenstaand is. Is Japan het voorbeeld voor wat Nederland te wachten staat? Het aantal singles wereldwijd groeit explosief. Sinds de lockdowns zoekt Jansen naar singles in Nederland om hun levens in beeld te brengen via haar camera. SOLO, waarin alleenstaanden de hoofdrol spelen, maakt deel uit van haar series en boeken met vergelijkbare thema’s. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan individualisme, ‘alternatieve’ gezinsvorming, eenzaamheid, liefde en relaties.

Komt het single zijn voort uit iemands jeugd of opvoeding, is het een tijdsbeeld, hoe voelt het om al (langer) als single te leven tussen koppels en gezinnen, wat is de rol van vriendschappen voor singles, en hoe ervaart men het gebrek aan (intiem) lichamelijk contact? In SOLO wordt ook aandacht besteed aan geluk en plezier binnen het alleen zijn.

SOLO is een lopend project dat in boekvorm gaat verschijnen en naast de fotografische beelden de schrijvers Miriam Notenboom, Tsead Bruinja, Ivo van Woerden en de singles aan het woord laat met een voorwoord van fotograaf Vincent Mentzel. In een recente voorpublicatie in Dagblad Trouw, de Verdieping, ligt de nadruk op gevoelens van eenzaamheid bij alleenstaanden. Project SOLO brengt ook blije singles in beeld en doet verslag van hun leven.

‘Niet opgemerkt worden is meestal een vloek. Ontsnappen aan de vloek van onopgemerkt te zijn gebleven of ontsnappen aan de vloek van eenzaamheid. In tegenstelling tot de vlucht uit de gevangenis houdt de ontsnappingspoging nooit op, je moet keer op keer ontsnappen.’ Schrijver Arnon Grunberg in Love Child

More than three million people live alone in the Netherlands. That number is likely to enlarge. Also single-person households in the Netherlands continue to increase. It is expected that in 2050 half of all households will consist of one person.

During her current project SOLO, photographer Mascha Jansen explores the lives of singles. For two months she photographed, interviewed, and filmed single people in Japan where more than half of the population is single. Is Japan a prediction of what will happen in Holland? The number of singles worldwide is growing explosively. During the lockdowns, and currently, she was and is looking for singles in the Netherlands to visualize their lives. SOLO, in which single people play the leading role, is part of her series and books with similar themes. Think for example of individualism, “alternative” family formation, loneliness, love and relationships.­  

Does being single originate from someone’s childhood or upbringing, is it a time frame, how does it feel to live single for a (longer) period among couples and families, what is the role of friendships for singles, how do you experience the lack of (intimate) physical contact? In SOLO also attention is paid to happiness, pleasure and reflection.

SOLO is an on-going project that will eventually lead to a book with writers Miriam Notenboom, Tsead Bruinja, Ivo van Woerden and a preface by photographer Vincent Mentzel. In a recent prepublication in Dagblad Trouw, de Verdieping, the emphasis is on feelings of loneliness among single people. Project SOLO itself will as well feature happy singles.

‘Not being noticed is usually a curse. Escaping the curse of having remained unnoticed or escaping the curse of loneliness. Unlike the flight from prison, the escape attempt never ceases, you must escape time and again.’
