The European Union is witnessing an unprecedented rise in populism. From Hungary and Poland to Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy, populist and nationalist parties have conquered parliaments and governments in recent years. Furthermore, for the first time in EU history, a member state has decided to leave the European Union. Is this just the beginning of a slow decline of the EU, or is there a way out of the current crisis?

We will discuss this with Konstanty Gebert, an international journalist and columnist at one of Poland’s biggest newspapers, Gazeta Wyborcza, and an Associate Fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations and with Abram de Swaan, essayist, sociologist and professor emeritus from the University of Amsterdam.

The conversation will be moderated by De Balie director Yoeri Albrecht.

This programme is created and produced by Goethe Institut and De Balie, organized as part of  Kultursymposium Weimar.
