Nederland legaliseerde prostitutie in 2000, in een oprechte poging de situatie van vrouwen in de seksindustrie te verbeteren. Die legalisering riep de afgelopen jaren verhitte discussies op, nadat bleek dat mensenhandel in de prostitutie een ernstig probleem bleef en ook de positie van prostituees niet verbeterde. Maar kan je de positie van vrouwen in de seksindustrie wel verbeteren als je diezelfde industrie in leven houdt? De Amerikaanse psycholoog en onderzoeker Melissa Farley, stelt van niet. Farley heeft twintig jaar lang internationaal onderzoek gedaan naar de langetermijneffecten van prostitutie en seksueel geweld.
Volgens Farley is prostitutie intrinsiek schadelijk voor vrouwen. Zij noemt het een mythe dat het legaliseren van prostitutie die schade zou beperken. In haar lezing legt zij uit welke mechanismes prostitutie schadelijk maken en waarom zij het belangrijk vindt dat mensen stoppen met het romantiseren van de seksindustrie. Uit haar onderzoeken komen hoge percentages naar voren als het gaat om het aantal vrouwen dat slachtoffer wordt van geweld in de seksindustrie en de psychologische schade die daarvan het gevolg is.
De prostitutie-aanpak waar Farley voor pleit staat haaks op het Nederlandse beleid. Ze is de oprichter en directeur van de organisatie Prostitution Research and Education in San Francisco. Unfortunately, we now know that this law resulted in increased human trafficking. There is little or no evidence that legal prostitution improves the lives of those in it. Pervasive sexual harassment and assault of all women (evidenced by #MeToo campaign) is supported by the institution of prostitution. Why are these facts – the empirical evidence- still debated? Why are we not trying to implement policy that offers real choices to those in prostitution, including the choice to escape it? Like the denial of the facts of climate science, Farley understands the denial of the facts about prostitution's harms as a political campaign with motivation based on the profiteering of sex trade capitalists.
