The wealthy Baron Ronald Busch Reisinger is a striking and popular guest on a luxury cruise ship. He tells the most fantastic stories about his life to his fellow passengers, who hang on his every word, but sometimes have no idea what to make of this portly figure—or so it seems. Ronnie is apparently not only a Scottish baron, but also the king of a piece of land in Africa.
The camera follows him during his vacation on board. Beautiful images of vast cruise ships slowly sailing by, the endless sea, the luxury accommodations, the ever-present staff and entertainment provide a picture of life aboard the ship, accompanied by a score reminiscent of TV series like The Love Boat. Nevertheless, it gradually becomes clear that behind this facade of decadence, there is a great deal of emptiness. In an interview in his cabin, Baron Ronnie reveals more and more of the other, lonelier side of his existence.
During this special screening, artist Inge Meijer will show here video work Beautiful Isle of Somewhere as an introduction to the film. For this work, she filmed on the world’s largest cruise ship, a tropical island next to Berlin and copied parts of the Netherlands on the Turkish coast.
Meijer’s work takes the viewer on a journey through surroundings that feel familiar yet strange at the same time. Central to this work is the uneasy relationship between humans and their surroundings: an environment that lives and breathes, but which humans continually try to manipulate.
After the film, director Sophie Dros will join us for a talk with Inge Meijer, led by De Balie-programme editor Emily Rhodes.

Een rijke en extravagante Schotse Baron brengt zijn tijd door op luxe cruise schepen, omgeven door romantische koppels, welgestelde families, hard werkend personeel en gepensioneerde ouderen. Een drijvende micro-gemeenschap die aantrekkelijk is voor sommigen, en afstotelijk voor anderen.
King of the Cruise volgt Baron Ronald Busch Reisinger van Inneryne op een van zijn vele decadente vakantie cruises. De Baron is op het eerste gezicht een bombastische man. Hij schept op over zijn status en extravagante levensverhalen, terwijl hij met zijn schotse kilt en koninklijke cape over het dek paradeert. Gaandeweg onderzoekt de documentaire iets groters; een menselijk verlangen naar erkenning en validatie.
Tijdens deze speciale vertoning zal kunstenaar Inge Meijer haar videowerk Beautiful Isle of Somewhere tonen ter inleiding op de film. Voor dit werk filmde zij op ’s werelds grootste cruiseschip, een tropisch eiland naast Berlijn en nagebouwde delen van Nederland aan de Turkse kust.
Haar werk neemt de kijker mee in een bekende omgeving die tóch vreemd aanvoelt. Centraal staat de ongemakkelijke relatie tussen de mens en zijn omgeving: een omgeving die leeft en ademt, maar die de mens continu probeert naar zijn hand te zetten.
Na de film schuift regisseur Sophie Dros aan voor een nagesprek met Inge Meijer, onder leiding van De Balie-programmamaker Emily Rhodes.

Inge Meijer (1986) studied Fine Art at the ArtEZ School of Arts Arnhem. In 2012 she won the Hendrik Valk Award with her graduation film. In 2017 she completed her residence at the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where her films and installations received much attention and praise during the Open Studios in 2016 and 2017. Recently, she presented her work The Plant Collection in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
Sophie Dros (1990) makes films about politically incorrect themes and likes to tread the unbeaten path. She thereby directs her camera toward those on the margins of society. In 2015, she graduated with My Silicone Love at the Dutch Film Academy/ Her film Genderbende (2017) tells the story of five young people who identify as neither feminine nor masculine, but position themselves somewhere inbetween.

In 2017 rondde zij haar residentie af aan de Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam af. Daar ontvingen haar films en installaties veel aandacht en werden zij veel geprezen tijdens de Open Studios in 2016 en 2017.
