Nationale Jeugdraad (NJR) and De Balie present a revolutionary workshop for young and idealistic citizens to come together and connect and build a positive and inclusive social movement.
The Ukraine referendum, the Brexit and the American presidential election have shown a huge gap between the young and old and the way they look upon the future. March 15th we have elections in the Netherlands. The first of a series of important European elections in 2017.
There are a lot of young people in our country who feel disconnected from politics and don't believe they have a say in the way the course of our nation in shaped. On the other hand, many young people ARE ambitious, idealistic, caring and willing to contribute to an inclusive, social and just Dutch society.
But how?
As one of the student leaders of Otpor!, Srdja Popovic resisted dictator Milosevic in the nineties and the resistance help made him fall. Through starting the NGO CANVAS, Popovic began training activists from around the world on how to implement non-violent tactics and activism to bring about social change. He wrote the book 'Blueprint for Revolution' about it.
In Blueprint for Revolution, Popovic outlines his philosophy for implementing peaceful world change and provides a model for activists everywhere through stories of his own experience toppling dictatorships (peacefully) and of smaller examples of social change (like Occupy Wall Street or fighting for gay rights). Popovic uses true and sometimes outrageously clever examples of the ways in which non-violent resistance has achieved its means. Popovic argues in favor of non-violent resistance not only for ideological reasons (as persuasive as those are) but because non-violence actually works better than violence. This is an inspiring (and useful!) guide for any activist–and a thoroughly entertaining read for any armchair politico.
This Saturday a trainer from CANVAS in Serbia will give a workshop on non-violent activism to idealistic youngsters who are willing to come together and fuel a progressive movement.

De Nationale Jeugdraad (NJR en De Balie presenteren een revolutionaire workshop voor jonge en idealistische burgers die samenkomen en verbinden om een positieve en inclusieve sociale beweging te starten.
Het Oekraïne-referendum, de Brexit en de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen hebben een enorme kloof laten zien tussen de manieren waarop jong en oud naar de toekomst kijken. 15 maart zijn er verkiezingen in Nederland. Het zijn de eerste in een serie van belangrijke Europese verkiezingen in 2017.
Veel jongeren in ons land voelen zich ver verwijderd van de Nederlandse politiek en geloven niet dat zij invloed uit kunnen oefenen op de koers van ons land. Tegelijkertijd zijn er heel veel jongeren ambitieus, idealistisch, compassievol en bereidt om actief bij te dragen aan een inclusieve, sociale en rechtvaardige Nederlandse samenleving. Maar hoe?
Als een van de studentenleiders van Otpor! heeft Srdja Popovic verzet geboden tegen dictator Milosevic in de jaren negentig en mede hierdoor zijn val veroorzaakt. Hij richtte de stichting CANVAS op om activisten uit de hele wereld te trainen in vreedzaam activisme om duurzame sociale verandering te bewerkstelligen. Hij schreef er het boek 'Blueprint for revolution' over.
In het boek zet Popovioc zijn filosofie voor vreedzame sociale verandering uiteen en biedt een model voor activisten wereldwijd om sociale verandering te bewerkstelligen. Hij gebruikt creatieve en intelligente manieren om vreedzaam activisme in te zetten en geeft concrete voorbeelden uit zijn eigen ervaring hiervoor. Popovich beargumenteert dat vreedzaam activisme niet alleen ideologisch sterker is, maar tevens tot duurzamere verandering leidt dan gewelddadige sociale verandering. Het is functioneel!
Deze zaterdagmiddag zal een trainer van CANVAS een workshop geven over vreedzaam activisme aan idealistische Nederlandse jongeren die bereidt zijn om samen een progressieve sociale beweging te starten.
Veel jongeren in ons land hunkeren naar een sociale, inclusieve en rechtvaardige wereld. Door het organiseren van deze workshop bieden de NJR en De Balie een groot aantal jongeren concrete instrumenten hiervoor.
