What happens when you are forced to leave a country where everybody understands your stories? Do you have to change the ways in which you tell them? Or do you educate others in understanding your stories?

Afghan stories need to be told. Now the Taliban has taken over again, it is increasingly difficult to tell stories in all shapes and forms: the media are suppressed; there is no free press. But even for those who have fled their country it is no easy feat to keep their stories alive.

Today, PEN Nederland talks to three Afghan storytellers who left their country at different times in their lives. When Samay Hamed – the director of PEN Afghanistan – left Afghanistan he already was an established media-director,  journalist, cartoonist and poet, shaped by his country. Jalil Azad recently arrived in Holland. He worked as a producer in the media en was involved in the art project Truth Booth about how Afghans see their future. Shah Tabibi left Afghanistan when he was four: his storytelling always happened in a Dutch context. How do they hone their crafts?
