Afrofuturism: A New Dawn

DUUR
120 minuten

How do you shape the future, when your past makes it difficult to even imagine one? On December 23rd, De Balie takes a glimpse into the future with a program on the cultural movement known as Afrofuturism. Afrofuturism is a wide-ranging term, describing the many different ways in which black artists, writers and thinkers use their work to envision a future, beyond the confines of a history of oppression. It combines elements of science fiction and fantasy culture, to design a world on its own, unique terms.

Afrofuturism traces its modern identity to the middle of the last century, and has run its course to the present through musicians like Sun Ra, George Clinton and Afrika Bambaataa; writers like Octavia E. Butler and artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat. In this program we will be using a lively combination of text, film and music to explore what Afrofuturism sounds, looks and feels like.

Our program will feature professor in visual culture Nana Adusei-Poku, to provide us with a critical perspective of the aesthetics and the social meaning of Afrofuturism. How do we recognize Afrofuturism? What makes it unique? What does it reveal about society at large?
Visual artist and researcher Charl Landvreugd will show the different ways in which he applies various Afrofuturistic methods to his own art, from a continental Afro-European perspective, outside of a traditional ‘black or white’ contradiction. He will also expand on Afrofuturism’s musical influences, and black queer and vogue culture.

Visual artist and photographer Airich will speak on the influence of Afrofuturism on her own work, and will expand on the meaning of her work as a counterbalance of Western beauty standards. The evening will be moderated by Ama van Dantzig. After the programme there will be drinks and dancing in our café with music provided by DJ's Funmilayo & Ike Melchizedek.
