It was one of the greatest demonstrations of paratrooper power ever seen, a heroic battle that lasted nine days and ended in a catastrophic failure and at last became a victory for Adolf Hitler. The cost of failure was horrendous, above all for the Dutch who risked everything to help. German reprisals were cruel and lasted until the end of the war. Antony Beevor, using many overlooked and new sources from Dutch, British, American, Polish and German archives, has reconstructed the terrible reality of this epic battle. Beevor is also known for his sharp analyses of modern Europe. What does he think about the present developments in Europe?
