Kick-off Forum on European Culture Video-On-Demand: De Balie TV + De Balie Vimeo. Europa worstelt met verschillende crises en conflicten – de oorlog in Oekraïne, de aanpak van de vluchtelingencrisis, de spanningen in Griekenland en Spanje. Kunst en cultuur lijken daarin steeds meer naar de achtergrond te verdwijnen. Maar juist nu is het van cruciaal belang discussies te voeren welke verbindende waarden kunst en cultuur voor Europa kunnen hebben. Op welke manieren kan kunst en cultuur bijdragen aan oplossingen voor de brandende kwesties die Europa verdelen?
Tijdens het programma vertellen drie vooruitstrevende Europese cultuurmakers uit Oekraïne, Bulgarije en Griekenland over het belang van kunst en cultuur voor Europa in tijden van sociale en politieke onrust. Met o.a. Vasyl Cherepanyn (initiatiefnemer en organisator van de School of Kyiv – Kiev Biennale 2015), Dessy Gavrilova (directeur The Red House – Center for Culture and Debate in Sofia, Bulgaria) en Poka-Yio (kunstenaar en curator, mede-oprichter van de Athene Biënnale). Vasyl Cherepanyn is directeur van het Visual Culture Research Center in Kiev, Oekraïne. Na zijn actieve bijdrage aan de protesten op het Maidan plein in Kiev besloot hij tot het organiseren van de Kiev Biënnale 2015 die dit najaar plaatsvond terwijl het oosten van Oekraïne door geweld werd geteisterd. Dessy Gavrilova is initiatiefnemer en directeur van The Red House- Center for Culture and Debate in Sofia, Bulgarije. In een van de armste gebieden van Europa probeert zij met The Red House de Bulgaarse bevolking bewust te maken van de politieke kracht van kunst.
Poka-Yio is beeldend kunstenaar, curator en medeoprichter en directeur van de Biënnale in Athene. De afgelopen biënnale die georganiseerd werd in een door de crisis getroffen beursgebouw, kaartte op creatieve manieren de problematische toestand in Griekenland aan. Poka- Yio cureert tevens de Biënnale in Athene van 2015 die eind deze maand gelanceerd wordt. Moderator: Yoeri Albrecht Dit programma maakt deel uit van Re:Thinking Europe Op 1,2 en 3 juni organiseren DutchCulture en De Balie het Forum on European Culture, getiteld “Re:Thinking Europe” over de kracht, impact en waarde van cultuur voor de toekomst van Europa.

In what ways can arts and culture contribute to solutions for the burning issues that divide today’s Europe? During the programme three progressive Europeans cultural initiators from Ukraine, Bulgaria and Greece discuss the importance of arts and culture for Europe in times of social and political unrest. Participants are among others: Vasyl Cherepanyn (institutional organizer School of Kyiv – Kiev Biennale 2015), Dessy Gavrilova (founding director of The Red House – Center for Culture and Debate in Sofia, Bulgaria) and Poka-Yio (artist and curator, cofounder and co-director of the Athens Biennal). Vasyl Cherepanyn is director of the Visual Culture Research Center in Kiev, Ukraine. After his active involvement in the protests on the Maidan, he decided to organize the Kiev Biennale 2015, that took place this autumn while Eastern Ukraine was hit by conflict.
Dessy Gavrilova is the director of The Red House- Center for Culture and Debate in Sofia. In of Europe’s most poorest regions, she tries with the Red House to make the Bulgarian citizens aware of the political impact of art.
Poka-Yio is a visual artist, curator and cofounder and codirector of the Athens Biennale. The last Athens Biennale that took place in a closed stock exchange building, broached the problematic situation in Greece. He is currently working on the Athens Biennale 2015 which activities will be launched by the end of November This program is part of the series ‘Re:Thinking Europe’
From June 1-3 2016 De Balie and DutchCulture organize a Forum on European Culture entitled “Re:Thinking Europe” about the value and impact of arts and culture for Europe and its future.
