Exactly two years ago, on the 17th of December 2014, Barack Obama and Raul Castro astonished the world with a joint statement: The USA and Cuba would normalize their relations after 50 years of bitter stalemate. Despite the misgivings of some revolutionary hardliners at home and anti-Castro dissidents abroad, the world cheered in unison. For a moment, Cubans saw a window of opportunity opening towards more growth, prosperity and civic freedoms. Sceptics said that nothing would change. Others wondered how long before this precarious socialist bubble would burst and the globalising and neoliberal forces would take over. Depending on one’s political colour, one sees different future scenarios unfolding for Cuba, ranging from a China-style market socialism to progressive leftist utopianism. With the new Republican president elect Donald Trump soon shuffling the cards at the White House, a renewal of the embargo looms large on the horizon. The future of Cuba seems as uncertain as ever. But as Barack Obama stated during his historical visit to Cuba in March 2016: change must be in the hands of the Cubans. More and more Cuban citizens demand to be an active part of the transformation of their nation. He is a scholar of Cuban and U.S. policies, inter-American relations, and Cuban culture, society and politics, as well as a published poet and playwright. He is the founding editor of Temas, a Cuban quarterly in the field of social sciences and the humanities. * Lenier González Mederos (1981, CU) is the founder and subdirector of Cuba Posible, an online magazine and research organization. A studied communication sciences and Tourism at Havana and sociology at the Instituto Universitario Sophia, in Florence, Italy. He wrote a great number of articles and essays on Cuba’s socio-political situation and is co-author of the book Voices of Change: emerging dynamics in the non-state sector of the Cuban economy. This programme is part of Connecting Cuba.
