For English please scroll down Dankzij de razendsnel groeiende technologische ontwikkelingen is de documentaire fotografie – en met name de fotojournalistiek – in het afgelopen decennium sterk veranderd. Naast de digitalisering van het fotografisch medium heeft ook de komst van social media een dynamiek gecreëerd die de traditionele manier waarop we omgaan met beeld totaal ondermijnd en veranderd heeft. Tegenwoordig kan iedereen beeld creëren, verspreiden, doorsturen, gebruiken, aanpassen en becommentariëren. Het gevolg hiervan is dat we te maken krijgen met een onvoorstelbare hoeveelheid aan materiaal, waarbij het steeds lastiger wordt om al deze beelden te kunnen doorgronden. Is het überhaupt nog mogelijk om te achterhalen wie een bepaald beeld heeft gecreëerd en waarom, onder welke omstandigheden het beeld is gemaakt, hoe het verspreid is, met welke intenties en via welke kanalen? Of om te achterhalen welke weg een beeld heeft afgelegd voordat wij het uiteindelijk te zien krijgen? Kortom, weten we eigenlijk nog wel waar we naar kijken? Een constante kritische houding tegenover deze media en het onderzoeken van zowel de spelers als het speelveld zelf is essentiëler dan ooit als we een adequaat standpunt in willen kunnen nemen tegenover onze huidige leefwereld. Op zondagmiddag 29 november presenteren Foam, World Press Photo Foundation en De Balie een programma met een reeks aan poortwachters – kunstenaars, journalisten, redacteuren, activisten en idealisten – die bepalen welke beelden van een gebeurtenis we te zien krijgen, en op welke manier. De focus zal dan ook niet op het beeld zelf liggen, maar op de ‘messengers’ die erachter zitten en hun nieuwe strategieën in visual storytelling. De middag zal geopend worden door Marcel Feil, Artistic Director bij Foam. Daarna draagt Bjarke Myrthu, medeoprichter Storyfriend en Magnum in Motion, een gesproken column voor. Het eerste rondetafelgesprek met Thomas Kuijpers (visual artist), Benjamin Chesterton (oprichter en production manager van Duckrabbit) en Evert Hermans (fotoredacteur NRC) behandelt de vraag welke verantwoordelijkheid redacteuren in onze huidige beeld-gedomineerde samenleving hebben: hoe kunnen zij bewustzijn creëren voor de dynamiek tussen realiteit en de representatie daarvan in beelden en hoe zorgen zij ervoor dat lezers ondanks de overdaad aan beeld geïnteresseerd raken in kwesties die de samenleving aangaan? De Artist Talk wordt gehouden door Susan Meiselas (fotojournalist/artiest, voorzitter Magnum Foundation) en Lars Boering (directeur World Press Photo Foundation). De middag wordt afgesloten door een tweede rondetafelgesprek, met Pierre Terdjman (#Dysturb), Bas Vroege (Paradox), Donald Weber (fotograaf) en Clément Saccomani (NOOR Images). Zij praten over de strategieën in het verspreiden van beelden: hoe kan visual storytelling zorgen voor een geëngageerd publiek en hoe kunnen beelden een betekenisvolle visuele impact hebben? Dit programa is vrij toegankelijk voor We Are Public leden. De voertaal van dit programma is Engels. Under the influence of ever-advancing technological developments, documentary photography, especially photojournalism, has changed enormously over the past decade. More than the digitalization of the medium, the use of social media has produced a dynamism that has completely undermined and transformed traditional ways of dealing with images. Everyone can now make, distribute, forward, use, adjust and comment upon images. The result is not just that we now need to relate to a barely conceivable quantity of material but that it is increasingly difficult to determine how we should understand all these images. Are we at all able to decide who created a particular image and why, what the circumstances were in which a photo was made, who distributed the image, with what intentions and through which channels? Or to find out what journey an image has made before we finally get to see it? In short, do we still know what we are looking at? A sustained critical attitude to media and the questioning of both the players and the playing field is more essential than ever if we are to achieve an appropriate stance towards today’s world. In the afternoon of 29 November, Foam, World Press Photo Foundation and De Balie will present a program with a number of gatekeepers – artists, journalists, editors, activists and idealists – who are important in determining which images of an event we get to see, and how. Therefore the focus will not in the first instance be on the image itself, but on the ‘messengers’ behind them with their new strategies in visual storytelling. The opening of this afternoon will be in the hands of Marcel Feil, Artistic Director of Foam. Next, Bjarke Myrthu, co-founder of Storyfriend and Magnum in Motion, recites a spoken column. The first roundtable conversation with Thomas Kuijpers (visual artist), Benjamin Chesterton (co-founder and production manager of Duckrabbit) and Evert Hermans (fotoredacteur NRC) will deal with the question what kind of responsibility editors have in our today's society dominated by images: how can they raise awareness on the current dynamics between reality and its representation by images and how can they manage to interest an image-weary readership in issues that urgently concern society? The Artist Talk will be held by Susan Meiselas (fotojournalist/artiest, voorzitter Magnum Foundation) and Lars Boering (directeur World Press Photo Foundation) and finally the second roundtable conversation closes the afternoon.
