The seventeenth Freedom Lecture is being held by Palestinian Jamil al Qassas and Israeli Assaf Yacobovitz, both active within the Combatants for Peace movement. This organization was founded in 2006 by (former) Israeli soldiers and Palestinian combatants, who decided to lay down their arms and by means of nonviolent protest speak out against the occupation. Combatants for Peace cooperates towards a peaceful solution for both populations.
What makes Combatants for Peace so exceptional is that in an extremely polarized and unequal environment, people dare to think across the boundaries of their own in-group. Compassion and empathy are not only key concepts for the organization, but in the case of the Israel-Palestine conflict, almost revolutionary. Despite the huge resistance within their own group and the political reality of violence on both sides, Combatants for Peace stays committed towards a peaceful solution, because they believe in a long term strategy where eventually our common humanity will triumph.
In times of global polarization where different groups seem to live completely in their own reality and point out the other as the scapegoat, we are going to engage in a conversation between Al Qassas and Yacobovitz about their radical belief in the strength of empathy.
Jamil al Qassas was born as a Palestinian in the Deheisha refugee camp outside of Bethlehem. He participated in the first Intifada, an uprising where he was consecutively jailed for thirteen times and his brother was killed. He now lives in Deheisha with his wife and children, works in construction and is active in his local community, being part of The Parents Circle – Families Forum as well as Combatants for Peace.
Assaf Yacobovitz served as an officer in the Israeli Airforce. He took part in Operation Cast Lead, which was part of the first Gaza War. After this experience, Assaf decided to join Combatants for Peace. He lives in Tel Aviv where he works as a psychologist.
Erella Grassiani provides the introduction. She works as an anthropologist at the University of Amsterdam and studies issues of security and military in Israel. She is an activist and founding member of gate48-critical Israeli’s in the Netherlands.
After the lecture we will engage in a conversation with Natascha van Weezel and Sofyan Mbarki in order to elaborate more on the polarization between groups within the Dutch context. In which ways can this ‘radical empathy’ provide opportunities to bring Jews and Muslims in the Netherlands closer together? Natascha van Weezel publishes her book Thuis bij de vijand: Moslims en Joden in Nederland this April. Sofyan Mbarki is a former teacher at Calvijn College in Amsterdam, and a city councilor for the Dutch Labour Party.
On the 28th of March Jamil al Qassas and Assaf Yacobovitz will hold the Freedom Lecture at het Nutshuis. Assaf Jscobovitz will give his part of the lecture in English.

This Freedom Lecture is in cooperation with: NEDERLANDS: De 17e Vrijheidslezing wordt gehouden door de Palestijnse Jamil al Qassas en de Israëlische Assaf Yacobovitz die beide actief zijn binnen de beweging Combatants for Peace. In deze tijd van wereldwijde polarisatie waarin verschillende bevolkingsgroepen volledig in hun eigen werkelijkheid lijken te leven en de ander als de zondebok aanwijzen, gaan we in gesprek met Al Qassas en Yacobovitz over hun radicale geloof in de kracht van empathie. Jamil al Qassas is als Palestijn geboren in het Deheisha vluchtelingen kamp, aan de randen van Bethlehem. Hij nam deel aan de eerste Intifada, een opstand waar hij dertien keer werd gevangenengenomen en waar zijn broer werd vermoord. Hij leeft nu in Deheisha met zijn vrouw en kinderen, werkt in de bouw en is actief in zijn lokale gemeenschap, als lid van The Parents Circle – Families Forum en Combatants for Peace. Assaf Yacobovitz nam dienst als officier in de Israeli Airforce. Hij speelde een rol in Operation Cast Lead, wat onderdeel uitmaakte van de eerste Gaza Oorlog. Na deze ervaring besloot Assaf om deel te nemen aan Combatants for Peace. Hij leeft in Tel Aviv waar hij werkt als psycholoog. Erella Grassiani verzorgt de inleiding. Ze werkt als antropoloog aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en focust in haar werk op onderwerpen als het Israëlisch leger en veiligheid. Ze is een activist en één van de oprichters van Gate48, een organisatie van Israëli in Nederland die zich uitspreken tegen de bezetting van Palestijnse gebieden.
Daarnaast gaan we in gesprek met Natascha van Weezel en Sofyan Mbarki, en proberen we een brug te slaan naar de Nederlandse context. Wat kan radicale empathie betekenen om de groepen in ons land dichter bij elkaar te brengen? Natascha van Weezel brengt in april het boek Thuis bij de vijand: Moslims en Joden in Nederland uit. Sofyan Mbarki is voormalig docent aan het Calvijn College in Amsterdam en gemeenteraadslid voor de PvdA. Op 28 maart houden Jamil al Qassas en Assaf Yacobovitz De Vrijheidslezing in het Nutshuis.
