Radicalisme is een centraal thema in het leven van Nawaz. Als zestienjarige moslim sloot hij zich aan en klom hij op binnen Hizb ut Tahrir, een islamitische organisatie die een kalifaat nastreeft. Uiteindelijk belandde hij in een Egyptische gevangenis. Na een gevangenisstraf van vier jaar maakte hij een radicale ommezwaai door afstand te nemen van Hizb ut Tahrir en zich fel uit te spreken tegen islamisme. Maajid Nawaz is nu een van de belangrijkste stemmen in het huidige debat over extremisme en radicalisering. Als pleitbezorger van een seculiere islam gaat hij in zijn boeken, lezingen en op Twitter vaak de confrontatie aan met zijn criticasters, van moslimextremisten en extreem-rechts tot regressief-links, die Maajid Nawaz islam-apologeten noemt.
Maajid Nawaz geeft ons tijdens de Vrijheidslezing de soundtrack van zijn leven. Aan de hand van verschillende muziekfragmenten staat hij stil bij zijn opmerkelijke levenspad, zijn drijfveren in zijn werk en activisme en zijn visie op de betekenis van vrijheid.
Zijn verhaal wordt ingeleid door Rajae El Mouhandiz, die uitleg geeft over haar band met Maajid en het belang van zijn verhaal. Daarop volgt een gesprek tussen Maajid Nawaz en jongeren uit de voorhoede van Nederlandse moslimgemeenschap waaronder rapper Massih Hutak. Hoe ervaren zij 15 jaar na 11/9 hun moslim-identiteit in een tijd van jihadistische aanslagen en moslimhaat? Zijn er in Nederland voldoende rolmodellen aan wie ze zich willen en kunnen optrekken en hebben ze de ruimte om hun stem te laten horen in het publieke debat? Maajid Nawaz is activist, schrijver, columnist en oprichter van Quilliam, een anti-extremistische organisaties die focust op integratie, burgerschap, religieuze vrijheid en radicalisatie. Quilliam adviseert op allerlei niveaus over radicalisatie, van risicovolle jongeren tot staatshoofden. Over zijn leven schreef Nawaz het boek Radical en samen met de bekende atheïst Sam Harris schreef hij Islam and the Future of Tolerance.
Over de Vrijheidslezing
Voor het vierde jaar maakt De Balie de Vrijheidslezing. In De Vrijheidslezing staat altijd het verhaal van een vrijheidsdenker centraal. Eerdere sprekers waren o.a. de Egyptische feminist Nawal el Saadawi, politiek activist Andrei Sannikov uit Wit-Rusland, internetactivist Esra’a al Shafei uit Bahrein en de Ugandese LGBT activist Frank Mugisha. Naast het programma in De Balie vindt de Vrijheidslezing doorgaans ook plaats op een andere locatie in Nederland. Zo houdt Maajid Nawaz op 13 september De Vrijheidslezing in het Nutshuis, Den Haag. Het bijzondere artistieke format van deze Vrijheidslezing is gecreëerd door Soukaina Belahnichi (De Nieuwe Maan), Rajae El Mouhandiz (Nederlands/Marokkaanse kunstenaar) en Nazish Khan (artistiek directeur Quilliam). On September 11th Maajid Nawaz, a British Pakistani, will give the Freedom Lecture at De Balie. Radicalism is a central theme in the life of Nawaz. As a young 16 year old Muslim he joined and then rose through the ranks of the pro-Caliphate Islamist organisation Hizb ut Tahrir. Eventually he was imprisoned in an Egyptian jail. When he was released after four years Nawaz took a radical turn by distancing himself from Hizb ut Tahrir and taking a radical stance against Islamism. Now Maajid Nawaz is one of the most important voices in the current debate on extremism and radicalization, advocating a secular form of Islam. He is not afraid of a hefty debate on these issues against his critics that include: Muslim extremists, the populist, the far-right and a faction of the Islamist-apologist left he calls the regressive-left.
With the Freedom Lecture Maajid Nawaz will present us the soundtrack to his life. Through a musical journey he will tell the story of his remarkable biography, his motivation in his work and activism and the meaning he gives to the concept of freedom. Rajae El Mouhandiz will give a short introduction to this Freedom Lecture in which she will explain her connection to Maajid Nawaz and highlight the importance of his story. Furthermore Maajid Nawaz will have a conversation with a panel of young Dutch Muslims who are part of the vanguard within Dutch society, among who the Dutch rapper Massih Hutak. How do they experience, 15 years after 9/11, their Muslim identity in a time of jihadist terror attacks and growing anti-Muslim hatred? Are there – in their opinion – enough role models within the Netherlands with whom they can level and to whom they can relate, and do they find that there is enough space within the public debate to air their voices? Prior to this conversation Soukaina Belahnichi will recite a column about her identity crisis. About Maajid Nawaz
Maajid Nawaz is an activist, writer, broadcaster and Founding Chairman of Quilliam, a counter-extremism organisation that focuses on the issues of citizenship, integration, religious freedom, and radicalisation. Quilliam consults on de-radicalisation on many levels, from youngsters at direct risk to heads of state. For the fourth year political and cultural center De Balie organizes The Freedom Lecture. A series of four lecture per year, with inspiring and personal stories from incredible speakers like Egyptian writer and activist Nawal el Saadawi, LGBT activist Frank Mugisha from Uganda, Russian journalist Yevgenia Albats, Turkish writer Ece Temelkuran, opposition leader Andrei Sannikov from Belarus and internet activist Esra’a Al Shafei from Bahrain. The artistic format was created by a team made up of Soukaina Belahnichi, who works for Dutch national television on ‘De Nieuwe Maan, Rajae El Mouhandiz, a Dutch/Moroccan artist and Nazish Khan the Artistic Director for Quilliam.
