Gabriel Tallent on ‘My Absolute Darling’

Op 16 april gaan we in gesprek met Gabriel Tallent over zijn uiterst succesvolle debuutroman Mijn allerliefste schat, literatuur en taal, maar ook over de onderwerpen die in het boek centraal staan, natuur, misbruik en overleven. Volgens The Guardian is de thriller Mijn allerliefste schat het meest besproken boek van 2017, Stephen King noemde het boek een meesterwerk, vergelijkbaar met To Kill a Mockingbird en Catch-22. Tallent schetst op een grafische manier de verhouding tussen Turtle en haar vader die ze tegelijkertijd lief heeft en verafschuwt. Hij zorgt voor haar, maar is tevens een monster en misbruikt haar op verschillende manieren. De natuur is haar toevlucht, in de haar vrije tijd zwerft Turtle door het bosrijke gebied. Gabriel Tallent studeerde aan Willamette University. Hij groeide op in Medocino in Californië, waar Mijn allerliefste schat zich afspeelt. Zelf omschrijft Tallent zijn jeugd als ‘vrije-uitloop’, waarin hij veel op avontuur ging en vaak langs de rivierbeddingen te vinden was om salamanders te zoeken. Hij is opgevoed door twee moeders. Bij hem thuis werd regelmatig gediscussieerd over literatuur, feminisme en gerechtigheid. Na zijn afstuderen werkte hij als gids in een natuurgebied in het noordwesten van de VS. Stephen King declared the book a “masterpiece” on par with “Catch-22” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The main caracter in the book is Turtle Alveston, a survivor. At fourteen, she roams the woods along the northern California coast. The creeks, tide pools, and rocky islands are her haunts and her hiding grounds, and she is known to wander for miles. But while her physical world is expansive, her personal one is small and treacherous: Turtle has grown up isolated since the death of her mother, in the thrall of her tortured and charismatic father, Martin. Her social existence is confined to the middle school (where she fends off the interest of anyone, student or teacher, who might penetrate her shell) and to her life with her father. Gabriel Tallent is the author of the New York Times-bestselling novel My Absolute Darling. He was born in New Mexico and raised on the Mendocino coast by two mothers. He had a free-range childhood and spent many hours down in the streams, along the banks, looking for salamanders. He was an only child in a house “saturated with literature, ideas, discussions”. He received his B.A. from Willamette University in 2010, and after graduation spent two seasons leading youth trail crews in the backcountry of the Pacific Northwest. Tallent lives in Salt Lake City.
