Peter Bouckaert, Emergencies Director van Human Rights Watch, en Marcus Bleasdale, een van ’s werelds bekendste fotojournalisten, vertellen tijdens deze unieke masterclass over hoe zij te werk gaan bij een internationale crisis. In november 2013 begonnen Peter en Marcus aan hun missie om wereldwijd de aandacht te vestigen op de humanitaire ramp die zich voltrok in de Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek, een land waarvan de meeste mensen niet eens wisten dat het bestond. Het doel van deze reis was om de oorlogsmisdaden en het gruwelijke bloedvergieten in dit land te documenteren. Hun onderzoek, dat de belangrijkste bron van informatie werd voor dit nog steeds voortslepende conflict, werd vastgeled in het multimedia project The Unravelling. In de masterclass gaan we aan de hand van beelden uit The Unravelling in gesprek met Peter en Marcus, van onderzoeksmethoden on the ground tot het naar buiten brengen van je verhaal aan de wereld. Peter Bouckaert is de Emergencies Director van Human Rights Watch en een expert op het gebied van humanitaire rampen. Peter heeft gewerkt in crises in onder andere Libanon, Kosovo, Tsjetsjenië, Afghanistan, Irak, Israël, de Palestijnse gebieden, Macedonië, Indonesië, Uganda en Sierra Leone. Marcus Bleasdale is een van ’s werelds bekendste fotojournalisten en werkt al meer dan 10 jaar samen met Human Rights Watch. Zijn foto’s worden wereldwijd door beleidsmakers gebruikt. In april 2015 won Marcus de Robert Capa Gold Medal van de Overseas Press Club. Deze onderscheiding erkent zijn uitzonderlijke moed voor zijn werk in de Centraal-Afrikaanse Republiek.

During this unique masterclass, Human Rights Watch Emergencies director Peter Bouckaert and leading photojournalist Marcus Bleasdale will discuss the essentials of international crisis reporting – from on-the-ground investigation methods to techniques for ensuring stories reach the broadest audience possible. In November 2013, Peter and Marcus began a journey to draw attention to a humanitarian crisis in a country that few people in the world even knew existed. The aim was to document the war crimes and horrific bloodshed that was taking place in the little-known country of the Central African Republic. Culminating in the multimedia project The Unravelling, their investigations have become the most important source of information on a crisis that continues today. This program includes documentary footage from The Unravelling as well as discussions on how the project was produced and disseminated. We will learn how Peter and Marcus used every tool available to put the story on the map and the methods they used to capture photographs, videos and satellite imagery. We will also learn how they crafted their material into a compelling narrative for the public and policy-makers. Peter Bouckaert is Human Rights Watch's Emergencies Director and an expert in humanitarian crises. He is responsible for coordinating the organisation's response to major wars and other human rights crises. Peter has worked on a large number of fact-finding missions to places including Lebanon, Kosovo, Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Macedonia, Indonesia, Uganda, and Sierra Leone, among others. Marcus Bleasdale is one of the world's leading photojournalists and has collaborated with Human Rights Watch for over a decade. He is dedicated to covering under-reported issues and uses his images to influence policy makers around the world. In April 2015, Marcus won the Robert Capa Gold Medal from the Overseas Press Club, which recognizes exceptional courage in published photojournalism, for his work in the Central African Republic.
