Augustus 2020, Wit-Rusland. Aleksandr Loekasjenko, dan al 26 jaar aan de macht, wordt voor de zesde maal uitgeroepen tot winnaar van de presidentsverkiezingen. Duizenden demonstreren tegen deze ongeloofwaardige overwinning, de protesten worden met de dag massaler.
Pavel, Denis en Maryna zijn verbonden aan theatergroep Belarus Free Theatre in Minsk en volgen de situatie op de voet. Denis demonstreerde in de jaren negentig al tegen het regime en twijfelt nu over het nut van de protesten. Maryna maakt zich zorgen over de toekomst. Pavel overweegt emigratie. Ze beseffen dat ze hun stem niet alleen op het toneel, maar vooral op straat moeten laten horen.
De steeds grimmiger wordende, opmerkelijk fraai gefilmde demonstraties, de discussies over de rol van theater in een dictatuur en de persoonlijke verhalen van de acteurs schetsen een veelzijdig en alarmerend beeld van het leven in Belarus. Courage, dat eerder dit jaar onder meer werd geselecteerd voor de Berlinale, Visions du Réel en CPH:DOX, is een portret van de moed van betogers die hun vrijheid in de waagschaal stellen, gefilterd door de blik van drie scherpzinnige en gevoelige theatermakers.
Na de film volgt een gesprek tussen regisseur Aliaksei Paluyan, DoP Tanya Haurylchyk en moderator, kunstenaar en activist Tasha Arlova.

Tanya Haurylchyk is een Belarussische filmmaker en DoP van ‘Courage’.
Tasha Arlova (1989, Belarus) is beeldend kunstenaar, filmmaker en activist. Een van haar laatste werken is de essayfilm “Dear Revolution” (2021). Ze is artiest in residentie bij De Balie.

Belarus, August 2020. Alexander Lukashenko, who has already been in power for 26 years, is declared the winner of the presidential elections for the sixth time. Thousands of people demonstrate against this implausible victory, and every day the protests grow.
Pavel, Denis, and Maryna, all members of the Belarus Free Theater company in Minsk, followed these developments closely. Denis had demonstrated against the regime back in the 1990s and now doubts there’s any point in protesting. Maryna is worried about the future. Pavel is thinking of emigrating. They realize that they need to make sure their voices are heard on the streets as well as on the stage.
Combining discussions about the role of theater in a dictatorship, the actors’ own stories and strikingly well-shot scenes of the increasingly intense protests paint a multifaceted and alarming picture of life in Belarus. Courage, previously selected for the Berlinale, Visions du Réel and CPH:DOX, is a portrait of the courage of demonstrators willing to put their own liberty on the line, filtered through the gaze of three astute and sensitive theater practitioners.

Aliaksei Paluyan (1989) is a Belarusian writer and filmmaker. His work consists of both documentaries and fictional films. He is the director of ‘Courage’.
Tanya Haurylchyk is a Belarusian filmmaker and one of the two cinematographers of ‘Courage’.
Tasha Arlova (1989, Belarus) is a visual artist, filmmaker and activist. Her latest works include the essay film “Dear Revolution” (2021). She is currently on art residency in De Balie with the 3Package Deal Talent Program.
