De oorzaak hiervan wordt vaak aan gentrificatie en bevolkingsdichtheid toegewezen, maar volgens wereldberoemd socioloog Saskia Sassen is dat niet het grootste probleem. In De Balie gaat zij in op een onderbelicht aspect van de discussie over de huizenmarkt: de landroof door grote corporaties in steden. En vertelt ze over de belangrijkste ontwikkelingen in steden wereldwijd. Hoe moeten steden als Amsterdam zich staande houden in een geglobaliseerde wereld? En welke kansen liggen er in steden om sociale verhoudingen gelijk te trekken? Saskia Sassen is socioloog en professor aan de Universiteit van Columbia waar ze de denktank Global Thought voorzit. Ze schreef meerdere boeken en wordt gezien als één van de meest invloedrijke sociologen wereldwijd. Haar laatste boek Expulsions: Brutality and Complexity in the Global Economy (Acco) werd alom geprezen. In De Balie deelt ze haar – over meer dan 20 jaar gevormde – gedachten over de positie van de stad en vraagt ze Amsterdamse beleidsmakers en experts hun eigen antwoorden hierop te formuleren. Bij de landelijke verkiezingen stond er veel op het spel, maar voor wie invloed wil hebben op zijn eigen buurt, wijk en straat zijn de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen van 21 maart 2018 een cruciaal moment. Hoe moet Amsterdam er over 10 jaar uitzien? De stad is drukker dan ooit, de woningmarkt kookt droog en tegelijkertijd laat onderzoek zien dat tegenstellingen in de stad tussen arm en rijk, wit en zwart en hoog- en laagopgeleid nog volop aanwezig zijn. Daarom vraagt De Balie in de reeks ‘Leve Amsterdam’ inspirerende buitenlandse denkers het debat in Amsterdam open te breken met hun visie en expertise. Leve Amsterdam bestaat uit een drieluik, met in het najaar visies van buitenlandse sprekers, vervolgens gesprekken met lijsttrekkers en tot slot het grote lijsttrekkersdebat.
