Kalpona Akter is a labour rights activist in Bangladesh and the founder and executive director of the Bangladesh Center for Worker Solidarity. She was awarded with the Human Rights Watch's Alison Des Forges Award for Extraordinary Activism. She fights against exploitation of garment workers in Bangladesh and fights for their rights including safety in garment factories, minimum wages and their right to form trade unions. She started working in the garment industry when she was 12 years old. Now she travels widely to speak about the deplorable conditions the Bangladeshi garment workers face every day that she knows from her own experience. Rana Plaza
24 April, it has been 5 years since the Rana Plaza building collapsed. Kalpona will reflect on this tragedy and on the years after. Did the garment industry become a safer place for garment workers? What are the achievements in this respect and what are the challenges? She also will further explain why supply chain transparency is important and how she with her organization is fighting for the rights of garment workers. During the evening moderator Ama van Dantzig will invite the audience to raise questions to Kalpona Akter and a number of experts to have a good and substantive conversation.
