Video On Demand: De Balie TV + De Balie Vimeo. Globalization, mobility and migration are changing the composition of society, as well as the way in which people see society. In this changing situation the role of institutions is of central importance again and again; institutions are expected to think about their position and attitude in relation to a dynamic and diverse society. Museums for modern and contemporary art are also forced to define their position and their role in an age of increasing mobility and migration. After all, the way in which identities and language change, for example, but also thinking about concepts such as “country” and “community”, are issues which are often addressed in modern and contemporary art, and therefore in museum collections. Moreover, these collections represent artists who come from different (geographical) areas, and this is implicitly or explicitly revealed in museum presentations. Migration has not only has social, political and economic consequences, but also changes artistic practice.

Globalisatie, mobiliteit en migratie veranderen de samenstelling van de samenleving, maar ook de manier waarop we naar de maatschappij kijken. De rol van instituties staat regelmatig centraal in de veranderende situatie. Instellingen worden geacht te reflecteren op hun positie en houding ten opzichte van een samenleving die even dynamisch als divers is. Hoe doen zij dit? Welke sociale, politieke en culturele posities nemen de instituties in en hoe creëerden zij sociale waarden? Moet het museum trachten om een plek voor iedereen te zijn? Ook musea voor moderne en hedendaagse kunst worden gedwongen om hun positie en rol te definiëren in de context van toenemende mobiliteit en migratie. De wijze waarop identiteiten en taal veranderen, maar bijvoorbeeld ook het denken over begrippen als ‘land’ en ‘gemeenschap’ zijn immers thema’s die veelvuldig in de moderne en hedendaagse kunst (en daarmee in museale collecties) voorkomen.
