De Balie x Veem Huis voor Performance x De Ateliers Zondag 18 juni presenteert de jonge Belgische beeldend kunstenaar Anthony Nestel (Artist in Residence) zijn performance The Seafroth Knows Neither Pain nor Time: een hyper-actuele en symbolische performance waarin Nestel, in een wereld die worstelt met vluchtelingen, racisme, opkomend nationalisme en machtsmisbruik, een alternatief zoekt voor het lineaire en singuliere Europees denken: “a world in relation.” Hoe ziet een wereld waarin culturen en individuen voortdurend met elkaar botsen, elkaar beïnvloeden, eruit? Een maatschappij waarin de manier waarop mensen met elkaar omgaan, zich constant vernieuwd? En wat voor perspectieven biedt dit dynamische wereldbeeld? Met zijn performance “The Seafroth” daagt Nestel zijn publiek uit om over deze grote vragen na te denken. De Balie, het Veem Huis voor Performance en De Ateliers selecteerden Anthony Nestel in het kader van het talentontwikkelingsprogramma de 3PackageDeal voor een 1-jaar-durende artist residence-programma in Amsterdam waarin Anthony zijn performance kon ontwikkelen. Naast Anthony Nestel werkten, met dank aan de 3PackageDeal, 14 andere veelbelovende, internationale kunstenaars een jaar lang in Amsterdam. Het werk van Nestel is zowel wat onderwerp als verschijningsvorm betreft, eigenzinnig, inspirerend en ontzagwekkend gedurfd. De thema's die de kunstenaar aansnijdt zoals in- en uitsluiting, fundamentalisme en sektarisme, zijn hyperactueel, complex, pijnlijk en vaak uitzichtloos van aard. Sunday June 18th the young, Belgian visual artist Anthony Nestel (Artist in Residence) will present his performance The Seafroth Knows Neither Pain nor Time: a hyper-actual and symbolic performance in which Nestel, in a world that struggles with refugees, racism, growing nationalism and the abuse of power, searches an alternative for the linear and singular European way of thinking: “a world in relation.” How does a world in which cultures and individuals continually interact and influence each other, look like?; A society in which the way people interact with each other, constantly renews itself? What new perspectives does this dynamic world view offer us? With his performance “The Seafroth” Nestel challenges his audience to think about these big questions.
De Balie, The Veem House for Performance and The Ateliers selected Anthony Nestel in light of the talent development program the 3PackageDeal, for a 1-year residency in Amsterdam during which Anthony has developed his performance. Next to Anthony Nestel, 14 other young, promising international artists have worked this year in Amsterdam. The work of Nestel is, both in his thematic and creative choices, inspirational, original and very daring. The themes that the artist addresses in his work such as inclusion, exclusion, fundamentalism and sectarianism, are hyper-actual, complex, painful and offer no easy solutions. Credits
