How can we safeguard the authenticity of photojournalism in a world where image manipulation is an everyday reality and people often do no trust what they see?
Every day we see hundreds of press photo’s – in de newspapers and television, on the internet and on social media, in history books and museums. So many, that we almost have no time to reflect on what we see and why we see this one particular press photo. What steps are taken before spectators can see a press photo online or in the newspaper? What choices are behind the process of making, publishing and exhibiting a press photo and what are the things that can go ‘wrong’?
With internationally renowned news photographers, editors of national and international media and curators, we discuss the dilemma’s they are facing. How do the circumstances in which photographers work determine what images we, the spectators, get to see? How do editors deal with the major problem of photojournalism: that people aim to cover factual news with an inherently subjective medium? Of the many photo’s that are taken, only a few will end in our history books. Of every import political or historical event, often only one image remains in our collective memory. What are the characteristics of an iconic image? What is the difference between photojournalism as news and photojournalism as art? With among others: Francis Kohn is Agence France-Presse (AFP, the large worldwide operating French newsagency)’ director of photography since 2012. In 2016, he was chairman of the jury of the World Press Photo. Bulent Kilic is AFP’s chief photographer for Turkey. He has covered major conflicts in the past few years, notably in Syria and Ukraine and the refugee’s crisis across Europe. In 2014, Time Magazine, chose him as its agency photographer of the year. Odd Andersen is a photojournalist based in Berlin for AFP. As a wire service photographer Andersen has covered a wide array of assignments of news and conflicts, his latest stories being Libya , Syria and the daily politics of Germany and the refugee crisis. Lars Boering is the Managing Director of World Press Photo foundation, the world's leading international organisation in visual journalism. Ronald Ockhuysen is Editor-in-Chief of Het Parool . Mirjam Kooiman is curator at Foam Photography Museum in Amsterdam. Guido van Nispen, CEO of the Dutch national news agency ANP, will give an introduction. Elke dag nemen we honderden nieuwsfoto’s tot ons – in de krant en tv, op het internet, op social media, in geschiedenisboeken en musea. Zoveel, dat we nauwelijks tijd hebben om stil te staan bij wát we zien en waarom we nu juist deze ene nieuwsfoto onder ogen krijgen. Welke weg heeft zo’n foto afgelegd voor de kijker hem te zien krijgt? Welke keuzes liggen er achter het maken, plaatsen en tentoonstellen van een nieuwsfoto en waar kan het allemaal ‘mis’ gaan?
Met wereldberoemde nieuwsfotografen, redacteuren van binnenlandse en buitenlandse media en curatoren, bespreken we de dilemma’s waar ze tegenaan lopen. Hoe bepalen de omstandigheden waar fotografen in werken, wat wij, als kijker, te zien krijgen? Hoe gaan (beeld)redacteuren om met het grote probleem van fotojournalistiek: dat je feitelijk nieuws wil overdragen met een medium dan inherent subjectief is? Van de vele foto’s die gemaakt worden, gaan er uiteindelijk slechts enkele de geschiedenisboeken in. Van elke belangrijke politieke of historische gebeurtenis, wordt vaak maar een beeld opgenomen in ons collectief geheugen. Wat maakt nu een nieuwsfoto tot een iconisch beeld en wie of wat bepaalt dat? Wat is het verschil tussen fotojournalistiek als nieuws en fotojournalistiek als kunst? Hij heeft alle grote conflicten van de afgelopen jaren vastgelegd met zijn camera zoals de oorlogen in Syrië en Oekraïne en de vluchtelingencrisis in Europa.
