For English scroll down Voertaal: Engels Een publieke discussie over en onderzoek naar cartografie en belichaming van de techno-zintuigelijke ruimtelijke orde van ‘Affect Space’ Sinds 2011 zijn we getuige van een terugkerend wereldwijd media spektakel, waarbij massale protestbijeenkomsten in de publieke ruimte lijken te verschijnen vanuit het niets, begeleid door een tsunami van zelf geproduceerde media uitingen, voornamelijk verspreid via internet. Van de Puerta del Sol in Madrid tot in de straten van Ferguson, Haren en Parijs (“Je (ne) Suis (pas) Charlie”) verschijnt dit terugkerende spektakel in zeer verschillende contexten en rondom een grote variëteit van onderliggende kwesties. Het patroon dat we in deze bijeenkomsten kunnen ontwaren blijft echter opmerkelijk constant: Hoogst affectief geladen mobilisaties via internet overspoelen de publieke ruimte, maar omdat deze publieke ruimte verzadigd is met mobiele media en netwerken wordt de ‘actie op straat’ onmiddellijk weer terug gezonden naar het media netwerk. Hoe kunnen we leren omgaan met deze tegelijk massale maar ook uiterst vluchtige fenomenen en de techno-sociale dynamiek die hen tot stand brengt? In vervolg op het essay Affect Space, begin 2015 geschreven voor Open! door media theoreticus en onderzoeker Eric Kluitenberg, Is Open! een publiek onderzoekstraject gestart samen met LAPS, het MIT ACT Art Culture Technology Program in Boston en Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, met als doel deze dynamiek te onderzoeken voorbij die protesten zelf. In deze bijeenkomst bespreken we hoe de zich ontwikkelende techno-zintuigelijke ruimtelijke orde van Affect Space in kaart kan worden gebracht, door gebruik te maken van dezelfde technologie die haar heeft voortgebracht. We vragen ook welke rol lichamelijkheid speelt in deze verdichte ruimtes als zowel een affectieve ontvanger en versterker? Deze bijeenkomst wordt vervolgd met een publieksprogramma in samenwerking met Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam op vrijdag 20 mei, rond de vraag “How to design Affect Space?”. Parallel aan deze publieke discussies wordt een serie van zes opdracht-essays gepubliceerd op het Open! platform. Met presentaties van: Christian Nold, kunstenaar en ontwerper (Emotional Cartography), kunstenaars Esther Polak/Ivar van Bekkum, choreograaf en media onderzoeker Susan Kozel, cultuur- en mediatheoreticus Nishant Shah, performance kunstenaar Arthur Elsenaar, Jeroen Boomgaard (LAPS), en Eric Kluitenberg. Since 2011 we have witnessed a recurrent global media spectacle where massive protest gatherings in public space seem to emerge from out of nowhere, accompanied by an avalanche of self-produced media mostly distributed over the Internet. From Puerta del Sol in Madrid to the streets of Istanbul, Ferguson, Haren and Paris (Je (ne) Suis Charlie), this recurrent spectacle appears across vastly different contexts and around a wide variety of issues. The pattern we see in these gatherings remains remarkably constant: Affectively highly charged mobilisations via the Internet spill over into public space, but because this public space is awash with mobile media and wireless networks, the "action in the street" immediately feeds back into the media network. How do we understand and engage with these massive ephemeral events and the techno-social dynamics producing them? Following up on the essay Affect Space written for Open! by media theorist and researcher Eric Kluitenberg early 2015, Open! together with LAPS, the MIT ACT Art Culture and Technology program in Boston, and Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam has launched a public research trajectory to explore these dynamics beyond the protest gatherings themselves. In this meeting we discuss how the emergent techno-sensuous spatial order of Affect Space can be mapped using the very technologies that produce these new dynamics. We also question how the body is situated in these dense spaces as both an affective receptor and amplifier? This meeting is followed by a public program organised in co-operation with Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam on Friday May 20 around the question ‘How to design Affect Space?’. In parallel to these public discussions a series of six commissioned essays will be published on the Open! platform.
