This year, the Frisian city of Leeuwarden is in the spotlight as the European Capital of Culture – with their strong regional identity as a key theme in the programme. Just as Catalonia, Scotland and other important European regions, Friesland proudly distinguishes itself from national culture, which often goes hand in hand with a rejection of the nation-state as a whole.
It is often said that Europe is a collection of regions, not nation states. What roles do cultural regions play and are likely to play in the future of Europe? Are we actually moving towards a ‘Europe of the Regions’? How can a strong sense of regional culture and language contribute to finding your place in multilateral Europe? Does regional pride lead to division, or unison on the European continent?
Together with artists from a number of such proud regions (including of course, Friesland), we will discuss the strength of the regional culture and its influence on the nation state and on Europe in the future. Dit jaar staat de Friese stad Leeuwarden in de spotlight als de Europese Hoofdstad van Cultuur – met haar eigen sterke regionale identiteit als een belangrijk thema in het programma. Net als Catalonië, Schotland en andere belangrijke Europese regio’s, scheidt Friesland zich op cultureel vlak met trots af van de nationale cultuur, wat meestal hand in hand gaat met de afwijzing van de natiestaat als geheel. Vaak wordt gezegd dat Europa een collectie van regio’s is, niet van staten. Welke rol spelen culturele regio’s in de toekomst van Europa? Bewegen we langzaam toe naar een ‘Europa van de Regio’s’? Hoe kan een sterk gevoel van regionale cultuur en taal bijdragen aan het vinden van je plek en identiteit in divers Europa? Leidt regionale trots tot verdeling of juist tot eenwording van het Europese continent? Samen met verschillende artiesten uit trotse regio’s (zoals natuurlijk Friesland), gaan we in gesprek over de kracht van regionale cultuur en de invloed die het heeft op de toekomst van Europa.
