For English please scroll down “Hitler’s world may not be so far away” – Timothy Snyder Volgens de vooraanstaande historicus Timothy Snyder (Yale) vertoont de huidige situatie in Syrië en Oost-Europa gelijkenis met het Duitsland en Oost-Europa van voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Dat schrijft hij in zijn nieuwe boek Zwarte aarde waarin hij een controversiële kijk op de Holocaust geeft. Volgens Snyder kon de Holocaust ontstaan door de vernietiging van de staatsstructuren in Oost-Europa, wat het perfecte vacuüm creëerde voor de massamoord. In zijn boek vergelijkt Snyder deze periode met de huidige wereldproblematiek. Snyder schetst een alomvattend beeld van de daders, de zeldzame helden en de vele slachtoffers die vielen op de zwarte aarde van Oost-Europa. Hij neemt het wereldbeeld van Adolf Hitler uiterst serieus. Hitlers geopolitieke visie werd bepaald door een mix van antisemitisme en de overtuiging dat er binnen afzienbare tijd een grote ecologische crisis zou ontstaan. Een koloniale oorlog om de Duitsers meer Lebensraum te verschaffen was zo bezien onvermijdelijk. Volgens Snyder vertoont deze situatie gelijkenis met de huidige klimaat- en migratiecrisis. Na de lezing van Timothy Snyder gaan Paul Scheffer (Hoogleraar Europese Studies TU), Hans Loos (Ruslanddeskundige en journalist) en Yoeri Albrecht (directeur De Balie) in debat over de huidige situaties in Europa, Syrië, Rusland en het Europa van kort voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Timothy D. Snyder is een Amerikaans auteur en historicus. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de holocaust en Oost-Europa. Snyder promoveerde aan de Universiteit van Oxford en is als hoogleraar verbonden aan Yale-universiteit. Zijn boek Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin (2010) werd in meer dan 20 talen vertaald, en bekroond met onder meer de Hannah Arendt Prijs en de Leipziger Boekenprijs. Met Tony Judt schreef hij Thinking the Twentieth Century. He describes the origins of the Holocaust, and draws a parallel between the political conditions in Europe then, and now. What do Snyder’s conclusions mean for Europe, and the rest of the world, in the near future? Snyder systematically analyses Adolf Hitler’s world view. Hitler’s geopolitical vision is defined by a toxic mixture of anti-Semitism, and a strong conviction in the imminent arrival of an ecological crisis. A colonial war to provide more Lebensraum for the German people was inevitable. The destruction of state structures in Eastern Europe created the perfect vacuum for the Holocaust. Snyder uses new source material in order to sketch an all encompassing picture – of the offenders, the heroes, and the many victims that lost their lives on the black soil of Eastern Europe. Following the lecture – Paul Scheffer, Hans Loos and Yoeri Albrecht join Timothy Snyder in a discussion about the current dangers facing Europe.

About Timothy Snyder Timothy D. Snyder is an American author and historian. He is specialised in the Holocaust and Eastern Europe. Snyder received his Phd from the University of Oxford, and is a professor at Yale university. His book Bloodlands: Europe between Hitler and Stalin (2010) has been translated into more than twenty languages, and received the Hannah Arendt Prijs en de Leipziger Boekenprijs. He wrote Thinking the Twentieth Century together with Tony Judt. Dit programma maakt deel uit van Re:Thinking Europe.
