Voordat ze in 2011 moest vluchten uit Syrië streed de Syrische mensenrechtenactiviste Reem al-Assil vreedzaam tegen het regime van Bashar al-Assad. Tweemaal werd ze aangehouden en ondervraagd vanwege haar vredesactiviteiten. Inmiddels is ze woonachtig in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, waar ze haar strijd voor vrijheid en vrede in Syrië onverstoorbaar voortzet, onder meer door haar werk voor de ‘Syrian Platform for Peace’ en de ‘Free Syrian Translators’.
In deze editie van de Vrijheidslezing zal Reem al-Assil een persoonlijk verhaal vertellen over haar confrontatie met een autoritaire macht, haar werk als activiste en de huidige vluchtelingencrisis. Bovendien zal ze zich fel uitspreken tegen de Britse bombardementen op Syrië.
We staan op een kruispunt: vervallen we in oude patronen, oorlogsretoriek en interventies of verkondigen we een boodschap van vrede, vrijheid en medemenselijkheid? Reem al-Assil opteert voor het laatste. Welke verplichtingen heeft Europa ten opzichte van vluchtelingen? Hoe ziet het dagelijkse leven van een vluchteling in Nederland er uit? En tot slot, zijn er oplossingen voorhanden die de huidige crisis kunnen verlichten?
Rechtsfilosofe Nanda Oudejans zal de avond openen met een voordracht over onze omgang met vluchtelingen binnen de EU. Waar heeft de vluchteling daadwerkelijk recht op als hij of zij asiel aanvraagt? Dit thema wordt tevens uitvoerig besproken tijdens het panelgesprek. Naast Reem al-Assil en Nanda Oudejans zal ook de Syrische vluchteling Ramez al-Junaidy aanschuiven om te praten over zijn vlucht naar Nederland en zijn verblijf in de noodopvang. De Syrische protestzanger Gharib kwam 20 jaar geleden naar Nederland als politieke vluchteling. Samen met zijn band zal hij de avond voorzien van een muzikale omlijsting. De Vrijheidslezing
Voor het derde jaar organiseren De Balie en Amnesty International de serie De Vrijheidslezing. In De Vrijheidslezing staat het verhaal en de strijd van een vrijheidsdenker centraal. In eerdere reeksen ontvingen we al vele inspirerende sprekers zoals LGBT activist Frank Mugisha uit Oeganda, internet activist Esra’a Al Shafei uit Bahrein, de Oekraïense schrijver Andrey Kurkov en de zeer bekende Egyptische schrijfster Nawal el Saadawi. “As long as there are human beings who decide to stand by their brothers and sisters in humanity there will be hope”, Reem al-Assil. The Syrian peace activist Reem al-Assil struggled against the regime of Bashar al-Assad in a non-violent manner before she was forced to flee the country in 2011. Al-Assil was detained and questioned twice on account of her peace activism. Now she lives in the United Kingdom where she continues her struggle for peace and freedom in Syria without fear or hesitation. Al-Assil’s dauntless activism manifests itself in her work for ‘the Syrian Platform for Peace’ and the ‘Free Syrian Translators’.
In this edition of the Freedom Lecture al-Assil will tell a personal story about her confrontation with an authoritarian power, her work as an activist, and the current refugee crisis. Moreover, she will speak out against the British airstrikes on Syria.
We are at a crossroad: do we fall back in old patterns, engage in war rhetoric, and military intervention? Or do we send out a message of peace, freedom, and compassion? Reem al-Assil embraces the last option.
What moral obligations does Europe have with regards to refugees? The daily life of a refugee, what does it look like? And finally, are there any viable solutions that can alleviate the current crisis?
Philosopher Nanda Oudejans will open the evening with a short lecture on our attitude towards refugees and their (lack of) legal protection within the EU. What is the refugee entitled to when claiming asylum? This theme will be thoroughly examined during the panel discussion. In addition to Reem al-Assil and Nanda Oudejans, the Syrian refugee Ramez al-Junaidy will join the discussion to talk about fleeing to the Netherlands and his stay at a refugee centre. The Syrian protest singer Gharib came to the Netherlands 20 years ago as a political refugee. Together with his band he will complement the evening with a suitable musical contribution. For each lecture, one critical thinker gives a speech to tell his story and highlight the cause he or she is committed to. During earlier editions we have welcomed many inspiring speakers like LGBT activist Frank Mugisha from Uganda, internet activist Esra’a Al Shafei from Bahrein, Ukranian writer Andrey Kurkov and the celebrated Egyptian writer Nawal el Saadawi.
