While in The Netherlands this remains a question, in Kenya it is already happening. On November 18th Khama Rogo, Lead Health Sector Specialist with the World Bank, turns the tables and shows us a picture of contemporary Kenya that we may not have seen before. While the African continent still faces enormous challenges in the areas of education, health and governance, Kenya is world’s most unlikely leader in mobile payments. By clicking a few keys on a mobile phone, money can be zapped from one part of Kenya to another in seconds. These technologies are now increasingly used to revolutionize the country’s health care systems and make health care more accessible to all Kenyans. The mobile phone is an important engine of growth in Africa, and Kenya in particular. Half of all mobile money transactions in the world take place in Kenya, and nowhere in the world so many people are using their cell phones for mobile payment and banking. Kenya’s mobile-money system allows customers to pay for anything without needing cash, a bank account, or even a permanent address. The social impact of this revolution is huge: it bridges infrastructural barriers and allows people to spend more time on other, more productive things instead. Yet in the field of health care these innovative developments are still lagging behind. How can we use mobile technology to bring about a similar revolution in healthcare? Khama Rogo is an activist voice in Africa on all issues of health and human reproduction for three decades. At De Balie, he shares with us his vision on mobile technology and explores how it can be used as a social equalizer in contemporary health care in Africa. After Rogos lecture there will be a panel discussion with a.o. dr. Het continent staat nog steeds voor enorme uitdagingen op het gebied van onderwijs, gezondheidszorg en goed bestuur. Maar tegelijkertijd is het gebruik van mobiele technologie – in bijvoorbeeld het betalingsverkeer – meer ingeburgerd dan hier. Vernieuwende mobiele bankdiensten worden nu ook gebruikt om de zorgsector revolutionair te veranderen en voor iedereen toegankelijk te maken. Op een manier waar wij, volgens Rogo, in het Westen van zouden kunnen leren. De mobiele telefoon is een belangrijke katalysator voor ontwikkeling in Afrika, en Kenia in het bijzonder. Nergens in de wereld zijn er zoveel winkels waar de mobiele telefoon als betaalmiddel kan worden gebruikt. Kenianen kunnen op elk moment geld overmaken naar familieleden en handelen hun financiële zaken direct per sms af. De sociale impact van deze mobiele revolutie is groot: infrastructurele barrières worden overbrugd en zowel rijk als arm profiteert. En waarom zou je mobiele technologie ook niet kunnen gebruiken om eenzelfde revolutie tot stand te brengen in de zorg? De mobiel zet de gebruiker centraal en brengt vraag, aanbod en financiering veel efficiënter bij elkaar. Khama Rogo geeft een inkijk in de innovaties die nu al worden toegepast en neemt ons mee in zijn toekomstvisie op de gezondheidszorg in Afrika. Na afloop van de lezing van Rogo praten we door met dr.
