Deze zomer brengt De Balie de films van Jean-Luc Godard terug naar het witte doek. Vijf klassiekers van een van de grootste vernieuwers uit de cinema. Vanaf 18 juli te zien bij De Balie!
‘Een film moet een begin, een midden en een einde hebben. Maar niet noodzakelijk in die volgorde’, zo luidt Godards bekendste filmwijsheid. Als voorman van de nouvelle vague schreef Godard vanaf de jaren zestig een geheel nieuwe filmtaal die de cinema ingrijpend zou veranderen. Beroemd zijn de jump cuts waar Godard mee experimenteerde in zijn energieke debuutfilm À bout de souffle (1960) met Jean-Paul Belmondo in de hoofdrol als voortvluchtige autodief. Ook veelvuldig geroemd worden de iconische beelden uit het beeldschone Le Mépris (1963) met Brigitte Bardot. Gedurende een carrière die meer dan zestig jaar omspande, verlegde Godard telkens weer de grenzen van de cinema. Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar Wai, Quentin Tarantino: allemaal zijn ze schatplichtig aan Godard.

Jean-Luc Godard werd in 1930 geboren in Parijs. Hij begon zijn carrière als filmcriticus. Samen met generatiegenoten als François Truffaut en Éric Rohmer schreef Godard voor het gezaghebbende filmblad Les cahiers du cinéma. In 1960 debuteerde de Fransman met A bout de souffle waarmee hij het tijdperk van de nouvelle vague inluidde. Deze filmstroming zette met zijn speelse en vernieuwende gebruik van filmconventies de filmwereld op zijn kop. Zijn gehele carrière bleef experiment het leidende principe voor Godard. Hij overleed in 2002 in zijn woonplaats in Zwitserland.

“A film should have a beginning, a middle, and an end. But not necessarily in that order,” is Godard’s most famous film wisdom. As the leading figure of the nouvelle vague, Godard created an entirely new film language from the 1960s onwards that would profoundly change cinema. Famous are the jump cuts Godard experimented with in his energetic debut film A bout de souffle (1960), starring Jean-Paul Belmondo as a fugitive car thief. Also widely praised are the iconic images from the beautiful Le Mépris (1963) with Brigitte Bardot. Throughout a career spanning more than sixty years, Godard continuously pushed the boundaries of cinema. Martin Scorsese, Wong Kar Wai, Quentin Tarantino: all are influenced by Godard.

Jean-Luc Godard was born in 1930 in Paris. He began his career as a film critic. Along with contemporaries like François Truffaut and Éric Rohmer, Godard wrote for the influential film magazine Les Cahiers du cinéma. In 1960, the Frenchman made his debut with A bout de souffle, ushering in the era of the nouvelle vague. This film movement turned the film world upside down with its playful and innovative use of film conventions. Throughout his career, experiment remained the guiding principle for Godard. He passed away in 2002 in his hometown in Switzerland.
