Handan Tufan
De gehele maand juni is in De Balie de installatie Lasting Things van Handan Tufan te bezichtigen. Een kunstproject gebaseerd op de alledaagse voorwerpen die mensen op de vlucht meenemen.
Lasting Things is een reizende installatie die de menselijke ervaring van migratie benadert via persoonlijke objecten. Het project werd geïnitieerd door fotograaf en filmmaker Handan Tufan en binnen een collectief van makers uit verschillende disciplines ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Imagine IC en Stichting Bootvluchteling. De installatie vertrekt vanuit “lasting things”: kleine, ogenschijnlijk alledaagse voorwerpen die mensen op de vlucht met zich meedragen. Deze objecten dragen herinneringen, verlies, hoop en identiteit in zich – deze worden niet letterlijk uitgesproken, maar zijn juist via materiële sporen voelbaar.
Binnen het project komen verschillende media samen, waaronder fotografie, miniaturen en film. Zo wordt het verhaal van Haroon en zijn tas verbeeld in een zorgvuldig opgebouwde scenografie van miniaturen, en nodigt een 7 minuten durende video de toeschouwer uit om nog dichter bij het verhaal te komen.
Het project was eerder te zien bij Imagine IC. In de maand juni bivakkeert Lasting Things bij De Balie. Lasting Things is geen afgerond geheel, maar een groeiend werk dat in de komende periode verder zal worden uitgebreid met nieuwe verhalen en perspectieven. Daarmee markeert deze installatie zowel een moment van ontmoeting als het begin van een langere reis.
Over Handan Tufan
Handan Tufan is fotograaf en filmmaker. Haar werk beweegt zich tussen documentaire, visuele storytelling en experimentele beeldtaal, met een focus op thema’s als migratie, herinnering en identiteit. In Lasting Things ontwikkelt zij een collectief en interdisciplinair project waarin persoonlijke objecten en intieme verhalen centraal staan. Tufan werkt samen met makers uit verschillende disciplines en onderzoekt hoe individuele ervaringen kunnen worden vertaald naar een gedeelde, publieke ruimte van betekenis en reflectie.

Lasting Things is a travelling installation that approaches the human experience of migration through personal objects. The project was initiated by photographer and filmmaker Handan Tufan and developed within a collective of makers from various disciplines, in collaboration with Imagine IC and Stichting Bootvluchteling. The installation departs from “lasting things”: small, seemingly everyday objects that people carry with them while fleeing. These objects hold memories, loss, hope, and identity — not expressed literally, but made tangible through material traces.
The project brings together different media, including photography, miniatures, and film. The story of Haroon and his bag, for example, is portrayed through a carefully constructed miniature scenography, while a seven-minute video invites the viewer to come even closer to the story.
The project was previously shown at Imagine IC. During the month of June, Lasting Things will reside at De Balie. Lasting Things is not a finished whole, but a growing work that will continue to expand in the coming period with new stories and perspectives. In this way, the installation marks both a moment of encounter and the beginning of a longer journey.
About Handan Tufan
Handan Tufan is a photographer and filmmaker. Her work moves between documentary, visual storytelling, and experimental imagery, focusing on themes such as migration, memory, and identity. In Lasting Things, she develops a collective and interdisciplinary project in which personal objects and intimate stories take centre stage. Tufan collaborates with makers from various disciplines and explores how individual experiences can be translated into a shared, public space for meaning and reflection.
