A poetic and immersive documentary portrait of a volcanic island community caught between the forces of nature, tourism, and survival.
For centuries, the inhabitants of Stromboli have lived in the shadow of the Iddu volcano. They revere and fear it in equal measure, while its unpredictable rhythms continue to shape daily life on the island. Tourism and the constant flow of visitors trekking towards the volcano have brought economic prosperity, but when a violent eruption takes place in 2019, the fragile balance between nature, tourism and local life is suddenly disrupted. The raw power of the volcano confronts the island’s residents with urgent questions about sustainability, dependence on tourism, and what it means to live under the constant threat of force majeure.
Following the screening, the filmmakers will join us for an in-depth conversation about the making of the film and the realities of life on Stromboli.

Persoonlijk zijn de films van Ross McElwee altijd geweest. Zijn eigen leven bleef centraal staan in films waarin hij grote onderwerpen als de tabaksindustrie (Bright Leaves) of kernwapens (Sherman’s March) aanhaalde. Maar heeft hij al die jaren misschien ook iets over het hoofd gezien? De dood van zijn zoon dwingt hem om opnieuw te reflecteren.
