As the head of the Nazi film guild in the Netherlands during the Second World War, filmmaker Jan Teunissen became known as ‘the Dutch Leni Riefenstahl.’ This revealing portrait also questions the boundaries between documentary and propaganda.

Luuk Bouwman previously directed Allen Tegen Allen, the ultimate analysis of the rise and fall of nazism in the Netherlands. This time he focuses on the head of the Dutch Nazi film industry in WWII. An 80 year old story about alternative facts and the manipulative power of film that seems more actual than ever in the era of fake news and AI clones.

Met gretig enthousiasme banjert Erik van Lieshout over het Brabantse land van zijn jeugd. Boeren, burgers en natuur zitten er in het nauw tussen stikstof en stankoverlast. Voor de kunstenaar is het vruchtbare grond.

Erik van Lieshout keert terug naar zijn geboortegrond: de voormalige turfgronden van de Deurnese Peel. De internationaal vermaarde kunstenaar verbleef acht maanden in het gebied met ondersteuning van het Noordbrabants Museum. Hij maakte er installaties die reflecteren op de geschiedenis, het heden en de toekomst van het Brabantse land. Op de arme gronden rond Deurne spelen allerlei zaken die ook in de landelijke politiek hete hangijzers zijn: intensieve veeteelt, stikstof, immigratie, woningnood, stankoverlast, natuurbeheer.

Na de film gaan we in gesprek. Hoe kijkt een kunstenaar als Erik van Lieshout naar het platteland? Is zijn blik op zijn geboortegrond veranderd nu hij er na jaren naar terugkeert?

Erik van Lieshout (1968) studeerde aan de Academie voor Kunst en Vormgeving in ’s-Hertogenbosch en Ateliers ’63, beide gevestigd in Nederland. Zijn werk is internationaal tentoongesteld, met grote solo- en groepsexposities op het Internationaal Filmfestival Rotterdam (2021), Annet Gelink Gallery (2020), Anton Kern Gallery, New York (2019), en de South London Gallery (2017).
