This programme is part of the festival Forum on European Culture, 17 – 20 September in Amsterdam.
In their ten-year project “The Europeans (2019-2029)” inspired by Henri Cartier-Bresson (Les Européens, 1955), photographer Rob Hornstra and writer-filmmaker Arnold van Bruggen set out to create a contemporary, kaleidoscopic time-piece on the European Heartland. Visit the exhibition during one of the days of the Festival!
It shows a strange continent in full transformation, where ghosts from Europe’s past loom as nationalism is on the rise. Hornstra and van Bruggen will offer a special preview to this project in its early beginnings, by exhibiting a handpicked selection of photography and video footage during the Forum, in the upper foyer of De Balie. By looking beyond national expressions of identity or local customs in individual countries, the artists explore some those European parables and tropes in its people, its architecture and its landscape.
