Amidst the profound social change and political turmoil of post-war Japan, a bold generation of avant-garde artists and photographers emerged in the 1960s, forever transforming the global art landscape.

The 1960s era in Japan was a time of profound social change, political unrest and student protests. The turbulent times of the postwar era inspired an artistic explosion in Japan, with the emergence of a revolutionary scene of avant-garde artists who pioneered many disciplines: experimental and erotic photography, “Angura” theatre and underground street performances, apocalyptic Butoh dance, surreal illustrations and seminal graphic design.

A new aesthetic of photography was born: “Are, Bure, Boke” (rough, dark and out of focus), pioneered by Moriyama Daidō and the Provoke magazine photographers. Araki beautified bondage and Hosoe Eikoh sublimated the male body. Ishiuchi Miyako captured her experience of American military bases. Kawada Kikuji’s era-defining photobook The Map captured the poignancy of Hiroshima’s trauma.

Master of underground theatre Terayama Shūji produced countless magical, surreal and vividly colourful films, plays and photobooks, Yokoo Tadanori and Awazu Kiyoshi revolutionised graphic design with their incandescent theatre posters, Tanaami Keiichi, Japan’s answer to Andy Warhol, developed his unique kaleidoscopic vision of Pop-Art, and Butoh founders Hijikata Tatsumi and Ohno Kazuo impacted modern dance forever with their dance of darkness and light.

‘Revolution’ van The Beatles, ‘She’s A Rainbow’, ‘Sympathy For The Devil’ en ‘Angie’ van de Rolling Stones, ‘Jealous Guy’ van John Lennon en ‘You Are So Beautiful’ van Joe Cocker.

All Static and Noise follows family members and survivors of the atrocities committed by China against the Kazakh and Uyghur people.

In All Static and Noise, director David Novack and producer Janice Englehart bring together the testimonies and voices of those who have been subjected to the state-sponsored oppression and imprisonment in the ‘re-education camps’ taking place in western China. Together these voices highlight the moral dilemma between risking the safety of families back home by speaking out and the necessity of exposing atrocities in the hope that global awareness will bring change.

The documentary honours those who dare to speak out, while asking the difficult questions we need to ask ourselves in today’s globalised economy. Because how can you be sure that the t-shirt you own was not by forced labour? The screening of All Static and Noise follows up the Freedom Lecture by Jewher Ilham on June 19.

Kyiv Critics’ Week x NL: Grey Bees

In the no man’s land situated in the heart of the conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces, longtime neighbors take in soldiers from both sides. As war grinds on and resources become scarce, they recognize that isolation is no longer an option.

The world premiere of Grey Bees took place at the IFFR in 2024, after which the film earned numerous awards, including Ukrainian Film Critics’ Prize.

Grey Bees as seen by Ukrainian critic Hanna Datsiuk:

Only two men remain in a deserted village lost within the ‘gray zone’ of Eastern Ukraine – Serhiyovych and Pashka. Once childhood friends, they are now reluctant neighbors, bound by a shared past and the quiet weight of solitude. Serhiyovych, a beekeeper, lives by his own rules, taking care of his bees – the last fragile link to a life before the war. Pashka, on the other hand, is restless and shrewd, scraping by however he can, never too concerned about picking sides. Together they cling to a place that feels less and less like home. But when a Russian sniper appears on the outskirts, their uneasy balance begins to crumble, demanding a choice they can no longer avoid.

Directed by Dmytro Moyseyev, Grey Bees unfolds like a theatrical production, relying on the magnetic dynamic between two remarkable actors – Victor Zhdanov and Volodymyr Yamnenko. The setting itself, seemingly pulled straight from wartime reportage, blurs the line between documentary and fiction. Moyseyev transforms real locations into a vivid cinematic space, filling it with characters and stories that feel deeply lived-in.

Rather than leaning to the traditional genre of war drama, the film takes an intimate approach to depicting life at the epicenter of conflict. It’s not about battlefield action but about those trapped in a place they cannot leave — home that has been long gone. The ever-present specter of death and decay makes this vision of Donbass one of the loneliest places in the world. And yet, for those who remain, escape is not an option. This is a story of those who’ve been displaced by staying at their birthplace.

Fragments of Ice is a documentary essay woven from a rare family VHS archive of a Soviet Ukrainian Ballet on Ice star, contrasting the utopian vision of the West with the oppressive Soviet reality. Before the screening there will be a live performance by the Ukrainian International Ballet.

Fragments of Ice as seen by Ukrainian critic Daria Badior:
Beginning as a personal archive project in 2018, the film transformed into a political statement about the transition period of the late 1980s and the beginning of the 1990s. Maria’s parents were dancers in the popular Soviet-Ukrainian Ballet on ice show, touring worldwide. Being abroad, Maria’s dad brought a VHS-camera with him, documenting his journeys and the reality beyond the Soviet Union. Revisiting the tapes, the director reflects on the life in the Soviet Union and its collapse in 1991, and the long-lasting aftermath of colonizing politics of the USSR and Russia.

The distance between the man with a VHS camera and his home, caught on the cusp of an era shift –Cold War vs. post-Cold War, suffocating communism vs. hybrid wild capitalism – provides additional fuel for questioning the reality we all are living in. Are we still stuck in the radical transition which began in the late 20th century? Has the 21st century even begun? Was there an end of the Cold War and the deep separation between “the West” and “the East” of Europe? Fragments of Ice invites us to join the filmmaker as she contemplates on these issues.

The film is dedicated to the memory of Victor Onysko, a Ukrainian film editor whose decision to go away from home in 2022 and to join the Ukrainian army to defend the country, the family, the world, was one of many decisions made by Ukrainian men and women after the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion. Victor, who started to edit the Fragments, died on the frontline in December 2022.

A strong wind sweeps Orest, the son of a Ukrainian emigrant, back to his village and separates him from his beloved. Determined to reunite, he embarks on a journey through extraordinary events.

Set at the turn of the 20th century and blurring the line between dreams and reality, Fuchzhou takes place in locations ranging from the Dnipro River to Florida and the Bermuda Triangle.

Fuchzhou as seen by Ukrainian critic Serhii Ksaverov:
As the debut feature of Mykhailo Illenko, the son of the prominent Ukrainian poetic cinema director and cinematographer Yurii Illenko, Fuchzhou naturally inherits the boldness and vividness of his father’s works, along with the connection to rustic Ukrainian culture. In some ways, the film can be seen as a sequel to another cornerstone of poetic cinema – Stone Cross. Like Stone Cross, Fuchzhou centers on emigration from Ukraine, drawing attention to similar themes that frame this act as both a physical and social death. However, it also serves as an anti-sequel, transforming the grey, grim nature of the original into farcical kitsch and turning the straightforward tale of death into a fable about weird afterlife.

Waiting for Cargo in the Roadstead of Fuchzhou Near a Pagoda, or simply Fuchzhou, was not conceived, filmed, or released like most films. It came to life like a Frankenstein monster, created during a time when the country’s cinema was torn between competing paradigms—Ukrainian, Soviet, and Western—both stylistically and thematically. By stitching together radically different elements, Fuchzhou audaciously captures the changing times like no other film of its era, addressing one of Ukraine’s most enduring tragic phenomena with bittersweet irony.
