The third edition of the Amsterdam Polish Film Festival (October 18-20), organised in collaboration with Polish Culture NL, will focus on Agnieszka Holland. With her poignant, empathetic, and often politically charged films, Holland (1948) is one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers in Polish and European cinema.

On the closing day of APFF we will screen two recent films by Agnieszka Holland: the Holocaust drama In Darkness (2011) and Spoor (2017), Holland’s adaptation of Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, in which an eccentric woman takes on the local hunting association. The films will be put into context by journalist Dore van Duivenbode and writer Bibi Dumon Tak.

About the films

In Darkness is a harrowing drama based on true events involving Leopold Socha, a Polish sewer worker and petty thief in Nazi-occupied Lvov (today Lviv, Ukraine). Initially motivated by money, Socha hides a group of Jewish refugees in the city’s underground sewer system to protect them from the Holocaust. Over time, his motivations shift as he forms a deep emotional bond with those he is hiding, risking his life to keep them safe.

Spoor is a dystopian fable (based on Olga Tokarczuk’s novel Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead) that follows Janina, an eccentric elderly animal rights activist who becomes increasingly disturbed by the local community’s hunting culture. Trying to look for her missing dogs, she encounters a misogynistic society of ruthless and corrupt men. When a series of mysterious murders of prominent hunters and authority figures occur, she believes the killings are the work of animals seeking revenge, but the local folk dissmiss that as crackpot theories from a crazy old woman. Blending elements of mystery, crime, and environmentalism, Spoor explores themes of justice, the clash between humans and nature, and society’s treatment of the vulnerable.

The internationally acclaimed refugee drama Green Border (2023) focuses on the Polish-Belarusian border, where Syrian migrants are used as pawns in a cynical political game. After the film, there will be discussions with Agnieszka Holland (via zoom, due to personal circumstances) about her life and work, as well as with migration expert Hein de Haas and Belgian actress Joely Mbundu.

About the film

In the treacherous forests that make up the so-called ‘green border’ between Belarus and Poland, refugees attempting to reach Europe via this route find themselves stranded. Belarus is trying to undermine the EU by encouraging this border crossing, while Poland refuses to let them in. As a result, the refugees end up in a cold, swampy no man’s land, without food or medical care. The lives of the activist Julia, border guard Jan, and a Syrian family become intertwined as pawns in a political game.

On the first day of APFF we screen two of Holland’s earlier films: Lonely Woman (1981), about life in communist Poland, and Fever (1980), a period piece about Polish anarchists in 1905. The films will be put into context by our curator Stefan Malešević and researcher Barbara Malak-Minkiewicz.

About the films

A Lonely Woman portrays Irena, a middle-aged single mother in 1980s Poland. Irena is living in squalid conditions, alone with her 8-year old son. She finds herself completely on her own, as she is neither a member of the Communist Party, nor of the recently formed Solidarity movement which is fighting for liberalization of Poland. Irena endures the lack of running water, heat, and electricity cuts, alongside her colleagues’ disentment for not choosing sides. After she starts a relationship with a disabled coalmine worker, a glimpse of hope appears as they start planning their plot to flee to the West.

Agnieszka Holland’s distinctive blend of dark humor and acute psychological observation delivers a vivid portrayal of Poland in the 1980s, emphasizing the bleakness and the brutal, almost poetically cruel absurdity of life under communism. Irena’s daily life offered a window into the realities hidden behind the Iron Curtain, but the Communist Party didn’t appreciate this insight and banned the film in Poland for six years.

Fever portrays a group of Polish anarchists who are plotting to assassinate a high-ranking Russian official. Set during the 1905 Russian Revolution, when Warsaw was still part of the Russian Empire, the film centers on their preparations and growing inner conflicts as they grapple with the moral implications of their violent mission. At the heart of the narrative is the relationship between the personal experiences of the revolutionaries and the larger historical events that shape their lives.

This programme is part of Artists Against the Kremlin, a showcase of anti-war, anti-authoritarianism art presented by The Moscow Times, All Rights Reversed gallery and De Balie in Amsterdam from August 3 to September 3.

During this night we showcase a selection of documentary and fiction short films, animations, and video clips. The main themes include the war in Ukraine, Russian imperialism and colonialism, the loss of identity, displacement and the search for a new home in an unfamiliar reality, and the struggles of political prisoners in Russia.

These films and animations serve as expressions of resistance, offering insights into the human experience under oppressive regimes and the ongoing fight for freedom and dignity.

Artists that will be featured during this evening include: Sasha Svirsky, Roma Liberov, Lazy Square, Nadya Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot), Kulema, Vladlena Sandu, Art Group Yav, Mikhail Ray, Artisterror, The Party of the Dead, Mr. Freeman, Ira Derviz, and Animators Against War.

Diverse aspecten van de doorwerking van de Indische koloniale invloeden, twee oorlogen, de migratie en de opvang in Nederland komen aan bod.

Simone Berger en Armando Ello gingen voor hun film op zoek naar de overdracht van transgenerationele (oorlogs)trauma’s op de tweede en de derde naoorlogse generatie met een Indische en/of Molukse achtergrond.

De literaire schrijvers Reggie Baay, Marion Bloem, Adriaan van Dis, Dido Michielsen en Sylvia Pessireron verwerkten hun familiegeschiedenis in hun oeuvre en kijken op een openhartige wijze hierop terug. Zij groeiden op met (groot)ouders met onverwerkte trauma’s.

Vier personen van de derde generatie gebruiken hun familiegeschiedenis in hun dagelijkse werk op een kunstzinnige of professionele wijze: Robin Block, Cheroney Pelupessy, Inez Schelfhout en Esmay Usmany. Zij geven een nieuwe vorm aan hun bewogen erfenis en aan de toekomst van het herdenken. Zij willen de vaak onbewuste patronen doorbreken.

De interviews zijn aangevuld met 2D-animaties die op een laagdrempelige wijze de invloed van stress en angst op lichaam en brein tonen. Klinisch psycholoog en psychotherapeut Schelfhout schreef samen met Berger het script. Schelfhout en twee traumaspecialisten geven inzicht in hoe (oorlogs)trauma’s van generatie op generatie kunnen worden doorgegeven. Ook geven zij inzicht in de periode na 1945, toen migranten en repatrianten na aankomst in Holland geen luisterend oor vonden en aanpassen hun credo werd. Zij benadrukken het belang van verwerking, zodat de overdracht van trauma’s gestopt kan worden. Andere thema’s die aan bod komen, zijn veerkracht, het belang van het blijven delen van de familiegeschiedenis en het gezamenlijk herdenken.

Burgemeester Marcouch van Arnhem, die Marokkaanse roots heeft, benoemt de bijzondere herdenkingscultuur in Nederland, die hij als geen ander kent, onder andere door het bijwonen van de diverse Indische herdenkingen op Landgoed Bronbeek. Hij onderstreept dat het belangrijk is dat de verhalen over het oorlogsverleden verteld blijven worden.

Glas, mijn onvervulde leven is het coming-of-old-age verhaal van de 52-jarige Rogier Kappers – alias De Glazendraaier – die zijn kinderdroom najaagt: beroemd worden als straatmuzikant op het glasorgel.

In de film volgen we onze (anti)held op zijn soms hilarische, en tegelijkertijd ontroerende zoektocht naar roem, liefde en fortuin. Van het eigenhandig bouwen van zijn eerste glasorgel tot een gepassioneerde ontmoeting met de wereldberoemde componist Arvo Pärt; van zijn eerste schreden op straat tot een rampzalig avontuur in Dubai. En dan nog die nooit verwachte ‘grande finale’… Zeven jaar lang legt Kappers de weg naar zijn droom vast. Het levert een origineel zelfportret op, vol muziek en hilarische en ontroerende ups en downs. Een unieke feelgood documentaire.

Voor de film van Rogier Kappers vertonen we de korte film Glas. Regisseur Bert Haanstra won in 1958 met Glas de Oscar voor de beste korte documentaire. Deze film schetst een beeld van de Nederlandse glasindustrie en wordt vaak beschouwd als de perfecte korte documentaire.

Na de film volgt een optreden van Rogier Kappers op zijn glasorgel.

Taking the shape of a gentle western, Looking for Horses is a poetic documentary on trauma, survival and connection.

Looking for Horses is about the friendship between the filmmaker and a fisherman, who lost his hearing during the Bosnian civil war and retreated to a lake to live in solitude. The filmmaker, son of Bosnian parents, struggles to communicate as he lost his mother-tongue due to a heavy stutter. Despite their speech and hearing limitations, a bond develops between the young man and the veteran, as he shares his world of the lake: full of large catfish, wild horses, wide silences, and dangerous thunderstorms. Where for the fisherman the lake stands for a withdrawal from a fractured country, a land of war; for the filmmaker it precisely means the return to that broken place, the land of his parents. They look for ways to communicate, while the camera mediates their growing bond.

After the screening we engage in a conversation with the director Stefan Pavlović and Menno Otten, a Dutch filmmaker, to discuss their approaches to filmmaking and the practical, moral and artistic challenges they face in their work.

Nomade in Niemandsland van Hester Jonkhout neemt je mee in het bewogen leven van Caribische kunstenaar Felix de Rooy. De Rooy geldt als een pionier die als eerste in het Nederlandse Koninkrijk met zijn kunst vrijuit vertelt wat het betekent om queer en Caribisch te zijn.

Met zijn werk daagt hij de gevestigde orde uit om zichzelf in de spiegel te bekijken. De Rooy, die zijn seksuele identiteit expliciet uitdraagt in zijn werk, ontwikkelt zich snel als een productieve gedreven beeldend kunstenaar, curator, theater- en filmmaker op zijn geboorte-eiland Curaçao en later in New York en Nederland. Als geëngageerde man kaart hij verschillende gevoelige onderwerpen aan zoals de verhouding tussen Nederland en haar voormalige kolonie Curaçao in speelfilm Ava & Gabriël (1990) en de beeldvorming van Zwarte mensen in de populaire cultuur met de spraakmakende tentoonstelling Negrophila-Wit Over Zwart (1989). Ondanks de maatschappelijke relevantie van zijn onderwerpen, wordt Felix in de doorgaans witte kunstwereld niet opgenomen als man van betekenis.

Tot op heden heeft niemand ooit gezien hoe de paling zich voortplant en er zijn nog nooit eieren gevonden. Eeuwenlang is het niet gelukt, maar nu de paling met uitsterven bedreigd wordt, krijgt de zoektocht naar het mysterie van haar voortplanting een nieuwe urgentie. Geeft de paling zijn geheim prijs om gered te worden?

Van de Sargassozee tot een laboratorium in Volendam tracht een kleurrijk gezelschap het raadsel dat de paling heet op te lossen. In Japan, waar de ‘unagi’ ongekend populair is, is palingliefhebber Kenichi volledig in de ban geraakt van het raadselachtige dier.

Met nog niet eerder vertoonde onderwateropnamen brengt Palingdans een ode aan het verborgen en sierlijke (seks)leven van dit ongrijpbare dier. Waar komt onze fascinatie voor de paling vandaan? En kunnen we de paling leren begrijpen?

Regisseur Karin Junger kreeg kritiek toen in 2017 haar documentaire Ik alleen in de klas uitkwam over uitsluiting en racisme. Als witte vrouw zou zij deze film niet moeten maken zeiden critici. Zij is niet de enige maker die de afgelopen jaren werd beticht van culturele toe-eigening en het innemen van ruimte. In Free Space onderzoekt Junger wie wat mag maken in de kunst. In De Balie vertoont zij haar documentaire, waarna ze in gesprek gaat met theatermaker Maarten van Hinte over culturele toe-eigening in de kunstwereld.

In Free Space vraagt Karin Junger aan kunstenaars in hoeverre je sekse, kleur of seksuele voorkeur bepalend is voor wat je wel of niet zou moeten maken. Zij sprak daarover verschillende makers waaronder schrijver Ted van Lieshout, theatermaker Raymi Sambo, winti-priesteres Marian Markelo en auteurs Stephan Sanders en Thomas Chatterton Williams.

Karin Junger is een schrijver-regisseur. Ze groeide op in België en woont momenteel in Nederland. Ze volgde de opleiding tot regie drama aan het MAURITS BINGER Filminstituut in Amsterdam. Als documentairemaker regisseerde ze onder andere ‘Ik alleen in de klas’ en ‘Sexy Money’ (nominatie Gouden Kalf 2014).

Maarten van Hinte is een Nederlands-Surinaamse acteur, regisseur, (toneel)schrijver en dramaturg. Hij schreef onder meer aan de voorstellingen Woiski vs. Woiski en de Gliphoeve van Orkater en maakte voor het Nationaal Theater een toneelbewerking van Tori (Brian Elstak). Samen met Marjorie Boston is hij de creatieve kracht achter RIGHTABOUTNOW INC. Zij pionierden met Made in da Shade,het hiphop theater in Nederland, en waren oprichters en curatoren van het legendarische MC theater.
