Exposition: The City as a Black Box

A photographic investigation of the fleeting encounter between strangers by Anna Theunissen

winner Open Call
Location
De Balie, Foyer
Opening hours
10:00 – 22:00

There are endless ways to look at an encounter between random people. In her photographic project Anna Theunissen investigates the ambiguity that springs up when strangers run into each other on the street: the moment of noticing one another can establish a connection, but it can also dissolve just as quickly. Theunissen’s work shows how each person in the city takes part in a carousel of encounters—where they meet, bid farewell, return home, and begin anew the following day.

About Anna Theunissen

Anna Theunissen questions the medium of photography by exploring the role of the viewer. In this case, the viewer encompasses the photographer, the people in the images, and the audience observing the work. Through short stories where perspectives on situations continually shift, the ambivalence of actions is examined. Theunissen seeks to find nuances that challenge the distinction between private and public realms.
