Bringing Albania to the EU has been the main political promise of Edi Rama, Prime Minister of Albania. But doing business with Brussels, is ´like waiting for Godot´, said Edi Rama. Since Albania gained candidate status to EU membership in 2014, the country has been waiting for concrete steps from Brussels to start the long and reversible process of accession negotiations with the Union. For years, the Netherlands – among other member states – blocked the start of accession negotiations of Albania with the EU. But now, the war in Ukraine has confronted Europe with a new reality and important choices. What is the future of Albania and other candidate countries in Europe?

Yoeri Albrecht (director De Balie) will enter into conversation with Edi Rama about the position of Albania regarding the EU, the relationship between Albania and the Netherlands, and his view on the current geopolitical situation in Europe. What do we need to strengthen democracy in Europe?

Edi Rama (1964) is a politician, artist, writer, and Prime Minister of Albania since 2013. He is also the leader of the Socialist Party of Albania since 2005. Rama served as Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports from 1998 to 2000 and was Mayor of Tirana for three consecutive terms from 2000 to 2011.
