As part of the exhibition Carmen and Carmen, artist Wu Tsang has invited fellow artists and speakers who have inspired her work on Carmen. Today we open the exhibition with guitarist and flamenco singer María Marín who will perform her repertoire surrounding Carmen.
María Marín explores the intersections between voice and classical or flamenco guitar, generating a repertoire that is particularly useful for understanding the places that interconnect flamenco and the music of Georges Bizet. In this sense, it is not a musical or thematic adaptation of the opera’s themes, but a reflexive exercise on the intersections and escape points that shaped its imaginary between high and low, cult and popular.
María Marín is a guitarist and flamenco singer originally from Utrera, Spain. She began her musical journey at the age of seven. Trained in classical guitar at the conservatories of Seville and later completing a master’s degree at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in The Hague, she has performed with renowned flamenco artists and explored diverse genres like jazz and world music.
Marín has toured extensively across Europe, Asia, and North Africa, sharing stages with acclaimed artists like Carles Benavent and Antonio Serrano, and collaborating with dancers such as Pastora Galván and Manuel Liñán. Her debut solo album, JUNIO, showcases her dual talents as a guitarist and singer. She is also a frequent guest teacher at Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam.
Currently, she performs with notable projects including Las Tres Marías and several productions by Israel Galván, such as Carmen and Edad de Oro.

From 20 December to 12 January, award-winning filmmaker and multimedia artist Wu Tsang presents Carmen and Carmen: a film installation, along with a program of films, talks and performances, that together explore the myth of Carmen in conversation with her collaborators.
