A rare chance to experience a true cinematic gem: Raskolnikow (1923), the German Expressionist masterpiece inspired by Crime and Punishment, presented on an authentic 35mm print. Accompanied by a newly composed original score performed live by Andy Pavlov, an unforgettable fusion of film and music.

Raskolnikow (1923), directed by Robert Wiene (best known for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, one of the most iconic works in silent film history) adapts Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment into a visually striking psychological drama in the tradition of German Expressionism. Through stylized sets, distorted perspectives, and stark contrasts between light and shadow, the film renders the inner turmoil of its protagonist: a student who commits murder under the conviction that he is morally exceptional. The result is a suffocating exploration of guilt, alienation, and moral absolutism.

For this screening, composer and pianist Andy Pavlov presents a newly written live score for prepared piano. Rather than illustrating the images, Pavlov approaches the music as an emotional extension of the film’s inner world. Using an acoustic piano, amplified and processed through guitar effect pedals, he creates a sonic landscape that moves between hushed ambient textures and sudden eruptions of tension. The instrument becomes narrator, witness, and counter-voice, melodically and spatially interwoven with Wiene’s expressionist visual language.

Rooted in modern piano minimalism, post-classical sensibilities, and elements of analogue sound experimentation, the composition reclaims the historical tradition of live film accompaniment and reshapes it for a contemporary audience. What once served to fill the silence of early cinema becomes here an autonomous, newly composed score that enters into an active dialogue with the film.

Andrija Pavlović, also known under his alias Andy Pavlov, is a multimedia artist, pianist, and composer. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Rostock and earned his PhD at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade with the research project Quantum Music. Pavlov is co-founder of the internationally acclaimed piano duo LP Duo, which has won more than 30 international awards, performed worldwide in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Concertgebouw, and released twelve albums. With LP Duo, he initiated the groundbreaking art-and-science project Quantum Music, in collaboration with institutions including University of Oxford and Ars Electronica, and together with engineers and quantum physicists developed the instrument Duality — a portable hybrid piano. His work has been released by, among others, Universal Music Group, Donemus, and Brilliant Classics.

Cinema doesn’t only reflect the world – it acts within it. Artist-filmmakers Sílvia das Fadas and Masha Godovannaya perform an expanded cinema séance: a live dual 16mm projection, invoking an ancestral lineage of women in political filmmaking.

An incantation becomes a refrain in this double projection of sequences from films by women who made films politically, or gave their presence to films politically. Their doubles appear recaptured through Krasnogorsk-3 and Bolex lens and intertwined with landscapes and objects that once haunted the filmmakers. It’s all in her* hands shaping his form, her* labor questioning his authority.

Bibi Seshanbe, Saodat Ismailova

Saodat Ismailova, mythopoetic storyteller extraordinaire from the first post-Soviet generation of Uzbek filmmakers, paints a multidimensional tableau that layers ancient, mythological, and contemporary time – connected through the living ritual. Cinema is a bridge through the work of memory and imagination.

Bibi Seshanbe (“The Lady of Tuesday”) is a blessing ritual in Central Asia venerating an ancient female goddess and protector of women. Syncretic in origin, with Zoroastrian, animist, and Muslim influences, the ritual centers on a tale that parallels the story of Cinderella.

The film weaves together a reenactment of this tale, ethnographic documentation of the ritual as it is still practiced today in Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, and the story of a modern-day “fairy godmother,” Bibi Sora Oripova, a burn surgeon from Samarkand who founded a shelter, fighting for the lives and rights of women who have survived domestic violence.

Between Film and Art also comes to De Balie on March 21

In collaboration with Eastern Neighbours Film Festival, De Balie presents special screenings emerging from the festival’s Between Film and Art section – across two Saturdays, four works of acclaimed experimental cinema from and in relation to broader Eastern Europe.
Today: Unstable Rocks and Rudzienko, two films shaped by patient attention and tender politics – followed by a conversation with Ewelina Rosińska and Sharon Lockhart, moderated by the curator Temra Pavlović.

Geology, animals and the human path flow into this subjective portrait of Portuguese landscapes. Between 2018 and 2023, the filmmaker came across different regions and places in this country, either alone or with a group of artists and eco-activists.

On the fringes of these groups’ work and activities, themes such as nature conservation, ethnography, agriculture or actions against gentrification emerge.

The film’s rhythm is determined by the legendary 16-mm Bolex camera, but it is slower and contemplative, aligning with the contemporary idea of slowing down.

Rudzienko was shot over three years in collaboration with the residents of the Youth Center for Sociotherapy in Rudzienko, Poland. Building on the relationship she established in 2009 with Milena, a young Polish girl who Lockhart befriended during the production of her film Podwórka and who later moved to the center, Lockhart conceived of a series of workshops to empower the young women.

The group worked together to develop dialog and movements to be enacted on-camera based on their collective activities. The resulting film features a range of conversations, from the philosophical to everyday teenage concerns, and depicts actions both theatrical and mundane that voice the girls’ rich humanity.

The Polish-language film proposes an innovative approach to the relationship between image and language by offsetting the spoken conversations with their written translations, creating a space of quiet reflection.

ENFF: Film and Art also visits De Balie at March 28

After recovering from tuberculosis Mariam has a recurring nightmare about being kept high up in the mountains, in the middle of the forest in an old palace where outcasts live. The building is majestic but inhabitants are rejected from society. One day, Mariam goes to meet the secret community to overcome her fear.

In becoming friends with the tuberculosis patients of Abastumani and in sharing joy and pain with them, Mariam finally overcomes her fear. But Abastumani shares a forgotten story that was never told, the ghosts of the past reveal something much more sinister than Mariam’s personal nightmare, they expose the nightmare of a whole country.

4000 deaths every day
Tuberculosis (TB) is a curable disease, yet it remains the world’s deadliest infectious illness, claiming around 4,000 lives every day. Despite international commitments to end TB by 2030, scientific progress remains insufficient and funding inadequate.

At the same time, stigma continues to force millions of people worldwide to hide their diagnosis. Meanwhile, in much of the Western world, TB is widely perceived as a disease of the past. As a result of these misconceptions, nearly four million people worldwide are overlooked by healthcare systems every year, and many die needlessly from a curable disease.

After the screening the authors of the film and the exhibition are joined by Dr. Lucica Ditiu, an expert in TB, for a conversation about the illness, its stigmatization in the society and the future prospects of battling it.

This screening is organized in relation to the exhibition Hospitality, curated by Natalia Sudova for Bradwolff Projects, presented from 22 February to 24 March at Bradwolff Projects, located in a former surgical building of the historic Burgerziekenhuis in Amsterdam East. The exhibition explicitly addresses tuberculosis-related stigma, which varies across cultures but has devastating consequences everywhere. The project brings together TB survivors, their relatives, healthcare professionals, scientists, and policymakers, opening conversations often avoided in clinical or political contexts.

Hoe rouwen we? Welke rites hebben we om rouw vorm te geven? En vrij te laten? In Just Our Heart onderzoekt documentairemaker Maartje Nevejan via verschillende rouwrituelen onze omgang met groot verlies.

‘There is a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in’, gaat een van Leonard Cohens bekendste dichtregels. Het zou het motto van Just Our Heart kunnen zijn. In deze documentaire toont Maartje Nevejan verschillende rouwrituelen waarin rouwenden vorm en betekenis geven aan hun verdriet. Van een ayahuascaceremonie in Spanje tot een ontroerende bootvaart in Vlaanderen waarin kinderen die hun ouders hebben verloren de zonsopgang toe zingen. Intieme momenten die Nevejan met empathie vastlegt. Just Our Heart maakt bovendien ruimte voor het idee dat rouw niet alleen om overleden geliefden hoeft te gaan, maar bijvoorbeeld ook om onze ecologische omgeving, om vernietigde natuur.

Just Our Heart is een dieppersoonlijke (Nevejan rouwde zelf tijdens het maakproces) en warme documentaire. Een film die toont dat rouw niet gaat over iets afronden, oplossen of verwerken, maar draait om transformatie. Zoals Nevejan het zelf zegt: ‘We rouwen. We hebben lief. We rouwen weer. En we hebben weer lief.’

Whispers in the Woods zit bomvol schilderachtige beelden van winters natuurschoon uit de Vogezen. Bekroond natuurfilmer Vincent Munier creëert serene spookbeelden van het Franse woud in zijn allervroegste uurtjes.

Je moet even goed kijken voor je het ziet: een edelhert, dat als een geestverschijning afsteekt in de mist. Whispers in the Woods zit bomvol schilderachtige beelden van winters natuurschoon uit de Vogezen. Bekroond natuurfilmer Vincent Munier (die eerder met The Velvet Queen (2022) de best bezochte documentaire in De Balie van dat jaar afleverde) creëert serene spookbeelden van het Franse woud in zijn allervroegste uurtjes. Nog in diepe nevelen gehuld, maar zijn bewoners zijn – voor wie het ziet – klaarwakker. Uilen, spechten en dassen worden bijna intiem op camera gevangen. Alles ondersteund door een wonderschone soundtrack van Warren Ellis.

Ondertussen is Whispers in the Wood ook een film over hoe de liefde voor de natuur van generatie op generatie overgedragen wordt. Samen met zijn zoon en kleinzoon trekt Munier de natuur in; geduldig, in alle stilte, tot het woud zich openbaart. Daarmee is deze documentaire meer dan een aaneenrijging mooie plaatjes, maar een beschouwing op de relatie tussen mens en natuur. Een film die leert dat het de zachte, op het eerste oor misschien onbeduidende, boodschappen zijn waar je het beste naar kunt luisteren.

Mohammed & Paul: Once Upon a Time in Tangier biedt een onorthodox portret van Mohammed Mrabet, de enige auteur die niet kan lezen of schrijven.

De documentaire volgt zijn bijzondere vriendschap met schrijver Paul Bowles, schetst een kritisch beeld van de Amerikaanse kunstenaarskolonie in Tanger en verkent het grensgebied tussen het imaginaire en het reële. Fragmenten van Mrabets verhalen, opgenomen op tientallen cassettebandjes, worden aangevuld met magisch-realistische AI-beelden: een gigantische vis, een meloen die een paleis herbergt en andere poëtische visuele scènes.

Opgegroeid in Nederland als kind van Marokkaanse ouders, raakte regisseur Nordin Lasfar geïnspireerd door de schrijver Paul Bowles, die hem kennis liet maken met de literatuur en verhalen van Marokko. In de jaren ’60 en ’70 was Tanger een levendig toevluchtsoord voor westerse kunstenaars en schrijvers van de beatgeneratie. Midden in dit artistieke landschap stond Mohammed Mrabet, een jonge visserszoon en meesterverteller uit de Marokkaanse mondelinge traditie. Zijn verhalen kregen wereldwijd bekendheid toen Bowles ze opschreef, wat leidde tot een innige maar complexe vriendschap tussen de twee mannen, gevormd in een tijd van artistieke vrijheid, sociale ongelijkheid en verborgen taboes.

Nu, op hoge leeftijd, kijkt Mrabet terug op die jaren en op zijn unieke manier van verhalen vertellen. Lasfar volgt hem via archiefbeelden, interviews en sfeervolle straatbeelden van Tanger en onderzoekt de balans tussen Mrabets stem en die van de schrijver. Tegelijkertijd stelt de film een fundamentele vraag: wie is de eigenaar als het alleen gehoord wordt via de stem van een ander?

Het openhouden van scholen in Oekraïne is een poging om een deel van het normale leven van vóór de oorlog te behouden. Zonder interviews of reconstructies biedt Timestamp een intiem en direct inzicht in het dagelijks leven van leerlingen en leraren, zowel aan het front als in veiligere gebieden. De film observeert hoe scholen functioneren, fysiek en online, en hoe het lesgeven doorgaat te midden van luchtalarmen, onderkomens en onzekerheid.

Door leerlingen en leraren een jaar lang te volgen, toont Timestamp hoe een samenleving onder extreme druk probeert vast te houden aan menselijkheid, structuur en hoop. De oorlog is overal voelbaar, ook al blijft ze vaak buiten beeld: het licht schijnt, lessen gaan door, maar de dreiging is voortdurend aanwezig. De film benadrukt de veerkracht, moed en toewijding van mensen die midden in een oorlog proberen hun kinderen een toekomst te geven.

Timestamp is geregisseerd door Kateryna Gornostai (Stop-Zemlia). De film ging eerder dit jaar in première op het Filmfestival van Berlijn, waar hij genomineerd werd voor de Gouden Beer, en werd geselecteerd voor Film Fest Gent (nominatie Grand Prix voor Beste Film) en IDFA.

In Meer Dan Babi Pangang onderzoekt de Chinees-Nederlandse documentairemaker Julie Ng het succes en de dreigende teloorgang van het Chinees-Indisch restaurant, aan de hand van Golden House, het restaurant van haar vader in Rozenburg. Wat begint als een zoektocht naar de oorsprong van het gerecht babi pangang, groeit uit tot een persoonlijke en emotionele verkenning van haar culturele en culinaire identiteit als Chinese Nederlander.

Waarom serveren Chinees-Indische restaurants gerechten die Chinezen zelf thuis niet eten? Wat zegt dat over aanpassing, beeldvorming en de manier waarop culturen zich tot elkaar verhouden? En hoe komt het dat veel Nederlanders bij ‘de Chinees’ vooral denken aan babi pangang – een gerecht dat is voortgekomen uit de kruisbestuiving van drie culturen: de Chinese, de Indische en de Nederlandse.

Het gerecht heeft een Indische oorsprong en naam, werd aangepast door Chinese restauranthouders en is volledig afgestemd op de smaak van hun Nederlandse klanten. Meer Dan Babi Pangang is een ode aan de eerste generatie Chinese Nederlanders die met hard werken een onmisbaar onderdeel van het Nederlandse straatbeeld heeft opgebouwd. Tegelijkertijd is het een uitnodiging om verder te kijken dan het afhaalmenu.

Regisseur Amel Guellaty serveert de kijker met haar speelfilmdebuut een frisse, levendige en ontroerende road-movie die zowel hart als stijl heeft.

De 19-jarige Alyssa woont in een afgelegen stadje in Tunesië waar niet veel gebeurt en waar ze zich hopeloos verveeld. Ze is wanhopig op zoek naar meer. De alledaagsheid van haar leven verplettert haar vurige geest en iedereen om haar heen voelt haar lusteloosheid.

Wanneer zich een geweldige kans voordoet om in Europa te gaan wonen en werken, vraagt Alyssa haar beste vriend uit haar kindertijd, Medhi, om met haar mee te gaan op een reis van Tunis naar Djerba. Hij is de dromer met artistieke talenten, zij is de ritselaar met een uitdagende drang om te slagen. Maar hun vriendschap wordt op de proef gesteld, omdat de gevaren op de weg trauma’s uit het verleden oproepen. Het wordt een reis vol hoop, onrust, uitdaging en zelfontdekking.

Where the wind comes from is een fijne feelgood film over vriendschap, gedrenkt in warme gele, rode en vooral blauwe kleuren. Alyssa en Medhi hebben beiden dromen die niet met elkaar overeenkomen. Ondanks hun worstelingen vullen ze elkaar goed aan. De een is de rem (de overdenker) en de ander het gaspedaal (de naïeveling).

Een film die zowel fris en indringend is, speels en serieus, visueel sterk en emotioneel resonant. Met de nodige humor laat hij zien dat dromen niet naïef hoeven te zijn en soms zelfs levensnoodzakelijk zijn. Bovendien is de film mooi ingebed in de sociale context van een jonge generatie Tunesiërs die andere verwachtingen hebben van de maatschappij zonder moralistisch te worden, maar met compassie en zachtheid.
