How do you move forward as a folk after a traumatic event, when the trauma continues to endure?

The attacks by the extremist Islamic group ISIS  in 2014 on the Yezidi population in Sinjar, shocked the entire world ten years ago. Massacres, forced conversions, and women and children sold as (sex) slaves.

The news no longer covers it, but the crimes persist: nearly 3,000 enslaved Yezidi women are still not free. The liberated and survivors are marked for life with deep wounds.

On August 4, 2024, ten years after the attacks on Sinjar, NL Helps Yezidis, in collaboration with partners, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, FAFI, De Balie, and the Yezidi community, is organizing a commemoration of the atrocities and Reflecting on the Past and Looking Ahead: How to Move Forward.  Learn more and join the conversation during panel discussions, a film screening, and a Q&A.

Een slachthuis afbranden, hoe doe je dat? In haar nieuwste boek De instructies duikt schrijver Carolina Trujillo diep in de psyche en methodes van de activist. Wat betekent het om compromisloos voor je idealen te staan?

Tijdens Plein publiek, de wekelijkse interviewreeks van De Balie, gaat programmamaker Kees Foekema met schrijver Carolina Trujillo in gesprek. Over haar roman De Instructies, over de dagelijkse beslommeringen van de revolutie en het verschil tussen een activist op papier tot leven laten komen en zelf op de barricades staan.

Carolina Trujillo (Montevideo, 1970) is schrijfster en columniste voor NRC Handelsblad. Ze studeerde af aan de Filmacademie in Amsterdam en debuteerde in 2002 met de roman De bastaard van Mal Abrigo, die bekroond werd met de Marten Toonder/Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs. In 2009 verscheen De terugkeer van Lupe García, waarmee ze op de shortlist van de AKO Literatuurprijs stond en de BNG Nieuwe Literatuurprijs won. Daarna volgden de romans De zangbreker (2014) en Vrije radicalen (2017). Voor Meisjes in blessuretijd ontving ze in 2019 de Jan Hanlo Essayprijs.

Full equality between Israelis and Palestinians is necessary to bring down Israeli dominance, according to Standing Together. As the largest Jewish Arab grassroots movement in Israel, Standing Together wants to create an alternative to the current reality. Alon-lee Green, a Jewish Israeli activist, and Rula Daood, a Palestinian Israeli activist, will explain how they work from the principles of solidarity and collectivity towards justice. What is their path forward to convey their message?

Ever since 2015, Standing Together has tried to show Israeli citizens, unwilling to accept the status quo, that there is a powerful way to join forces, without erasing differences. Standing Together is against the occupation of Palestinian land and wants to debunk the myth that military oppression of Palestinians is needed for Jewish security. Against the ultranationalist campaigns of both Israel and Hamas, they provide a radical vision of collaboration and union. Tonight we reflect on the difficult reality on the ground: A far-right government in Israel and the deadly violence in Gaza and in The West Bank.

What tactics does Standing Together employ, what are the struggles on the ground ? Who is their support base? How do they deal with the variety of views on ending occupation and with people hostile to their message? What can activists here in the Netherlands learn from their work?

About the speakers

Rula Daood
Rula Daood is the National co-Director of Standing Together and speech pathologist by profession. She is a Palestinian citizen of Israel, born and raised in the Galilee village of Kafr Yasif and began her activism in her home city and later became involved in promoting Jewish-Arab partnership in mixed (Jewish-Arab) cities. Before joining Standing Together, Rula worked as a community organizer, organizing events and protests that drew hundreds of activists.

Alon-lee Green
Alon-Lee Green is the National co-Director and a founder of Standing Together. He got his start organizing Israel’s first trade union of waiters in a chain of coffee-shops and went on to found Israel’s first National Waiters Union. Alon-Lee emerged as a prominent leader of Israel’s social protest movement in the summer of 2011, and subsequently served as a political adviser in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament.

In het boek Morgen beginnen we weer opnieuw onderzoeken Aafke Romeijn, Daan Heerma van Voss en Etchica Voorn onze schaduwkant, met donkere gedachten die we allemaal wel eens kunnen hebben, maar die bij sommigen kunnen leiden tot een verborgen wereld met een groot taboe: het hebben van gedachten aan zelfdoding. Hoe praten wij hierover? En wat voor rol kan de literatuur hebben op het onder woorden brengen van gedachten over zelfdoding?

Tijdens de avond zullen de sprekers voordragen uit hun verhalen, en gaan zij met elkaar het gesprek aan. Ook Abdelkader Benali, die het voorwoord schreef, zal een bijdrage leveren aan de avond.

Precies één jaar na de verkiezingen kijken we hoe Nederland ervoor staat. De samenwerking met de PVV zet de verhoudingen binnen de coalitiepartijen op scherp. Nu de coalitie wankelt en de radicaalste PVV-plannen langzaam uit de ijskast komen, maken we de balans op. Hoe staat het land ervoor?

We nemen ook een kijkje over de grens, in Vlaanderen. Daar bleef de voorspelde overwinning van het radicaalrechtse Vlaams Belang in juni tot ieders verbazing uit. Hebben onze zuiderburen dit te danken aan hun beroemde cordon sanitaire? En áls het uitsluiten van regeren met radicaalrechts werkt, waarom hebben Nederlandse partijen dit idee niet overgenomen?

In veel Europese landen is radicaalrechts de afgelopen jaren sterk gegroeid. Tot voor kort konden gevestigde partijen nog vrij gemakkelijk buiten hen om regeren, maar dat is steeds lastiger vol te houden. Zijn diegenen die waarschuwen voor samenwerking met radicaalrechts ondemocratische paniekzaaiers met te weinig vertrouwen in de rechtsstaat? Of is hun vrees terecht en gaat de doos van Pandora onherroepelijk open zodra radicaalrechts stevig in het zadel zit?

Dit debat is onderdeel van een tweeluik met als centrale sprekers Tamar de Waal en Anton Jäger en in samenwerking met het Vlaams-Nederlands Huis deBuren. Het eerste debat vindt plaats op 9 november in Brussel.

Ieder jaar op Prinsjesdag geeft de deltacommissaris het kabinet gevraagd en ongevraagd advies op het gebied van klimaat en water. Een week ná Prinsjesdag gaan we in De Balie met deltacommissaris Co Verdaas in gesprek: om welke keuzes kunnen we niet heen? Hoe houden we het hoofd boven water?

Hoog water, schaars drinkwater, toenemende droogte en weersextremen: een vinger in de dijk zal weinig helpen tegen de grote uitdagingen die nu via het water op het land afkomen. We zullen keuzes moeten maken: wáár we verder verstedelijken, woningen bouwen, water bergen en koeien laten grazen. Van de strijd tegen het water beweegt het land naar leven met het water. Is Nederland klaar voor dit nieuwe verhaal?

In korte tijd is radicaal-rechts een factor van belang geworden in Europa. Hoe is dat zo gekomen en waar gaat de populistische golf ons brengen? Naar aanleiding van zijn nieuwe boek, Opstand, gaan we hierover in gesprek met schrijver en journalist Marijn Kruk.

Een illiberale contrarevolutie waart door het Westen en bracht op tal van plaatsen radicaal-rechtse partijen aan de macht. Politici als Orbán in Hongarije, Meloni in Italië en Wilders in Nederland weten gevoelens van ontevredenheid aan te wakkeren en tot vijandigheid richting migranten en ‘linkse elites’ te kneden. Hoe zijn we op dit punt gekomen? Welke momenten in de recente geschiedenis speelden daarin een rol? Hoe hebben die aan de populistische revolte bijgedragen? Welk antwoord zouden liberalen en progressieven hier tegen over kunnen stellen?

Technologie is overal in ons leven, maar er is nauwelijks democratische controle op de machtige bedrijven die de digitale wereld vormgeven. Het gaat vaak mis en publieke leiders raken de regie kwijt. Of het nu gaat om de toeslagenaffaire in Nederland, of de oorlog in Oekraïne, techbedrijven nemen steeds belangrijkere beslissingen. Helaas betekent een goed resultaat voor de aandeelhouders niet automatisch dat het ook goed is voor de samenleving. Hoe machtig zijn techbedrijven nu eigenlijk? En hoe overleeft de democratie in de digitale wereld?

Marietje Schaake (Leiden, 1978) is directeur internationaal beleid bij het Cyber Policy Center van de Stanforduniversiteit en was van 2009 tot 2019 Europarlementariër namens D66. Schaake schrijft over technologie en politiek in haar column voor Financial Times. 27 augustus verschijnt haar boek De tech coup.

This performance is part of Afrovibes Festival, taking place at De Balie on 11 and 12 October, featuring a lineup of performances and talks. Act(s) and Sweats is the final part of a triptych in which Tunisian choreographer Hamdi Dridi pays tribute to the hard-working body.

It is a choreography in the form of a ‘sound study’ in which Dridi transforms everyday repetitive gestures and actions into dance. He choreographs what the body carries with it as a memory. Beneath Dridi’s gestures, working bodies subtly appear: a movement, a colourful scarf, a voice, a melody. He connects fragments of memories – of his family, the Middle East and Egypt, the rhythms and colours of his childhood and adolescence – with his Arab roots and an homage to Tunis. His timeless hip-hop is enhanced by the music, a mix of industrial sounds, funk and traditional songs, touching the most sensitive emotions.
