Hoe zeg je ‘kolonisatie’ in het Arabisch? Hoe bepaalt taal onze blik op de geschiedenis? In een speelse documentaire voorstelling onderzoekt de Algerijnse-Franse theatermaker Salom Djaferi de taal van kolonisatie en de oorlog in Algerije vanuit zowel Afrikaans als Europees perspectief.
Toen Salim Djaferi voor de eerste keer in Algiers was, zocht hij in boekwinkels naar boeken over de Algerijnse oorlog, maar kon niks vinden. Totdat een boekwinkel eigenaar hem vertelt: ‘Boeken over de oorlog, vind je in de revolutie afdeling.’ Natuurlijk, in Algerije was de oorlog een revolutie! Maar wie bepaalt, welk woord we gebruiken? En als we zo verschillende woorden gebruiken, hebben we het dan wel over dezelfde geschiedenis?

How do you say ‘colonisation’ in Arabic? How does language shape our view of history? In a playful and documentary performance, Algerian-French playwright Salom Djaferi explores the language of colonisation and war in Algeria from both African and European perspectives.
When Salim Djaferi was in Algiers for the first time, he searched bookstores for books on the Algerian war, but could not find anything. Until a bookshop owner told him, ‘Books about the war, you will find in the revolution section.’ Of course, in Algeria, the war was a revolution! But who decides which word we use? And if we use such different words, are we talking about the same history?
