It’s been three months since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the future is still unclear. In this program, we will discuss how Europe should react. How has the European political infrastructure held up to war so close to its territories? What’s the importance of independence of gas? Where should Europe stand on providing weaponry and diplomacy? How can member states and the European Parliament work together? And how will Ukraine fit into the Union? A lot of possible scenarios.

Franak ​Viačorka is Belarusian politician, journalist and advisor to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Born activist, he was jailed multiple times by the Belarusian government.

Natalia Antelava is a Georgian journalist and co-founder of Codastory. She is an Emmy nominee and was short-listed for the European Press Prize.

Ruben Brekelmans is a member of Dutch Parliament for the VVD. He is a member of the commision on Foreign Affairs and a delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Thijs Reuten is a member of the European Parliament for the PvdA. He is a shadow rapporteur on Belarus.

The war in Ukraine has made it abundantly clear that we’ve not been listening enough to states bordering on Russia. Whether from the Baltic area or from the Caucasus, from Belarus or from Kazakhstan, everyone’s asking: who’s next?

In this program, we will discuss with (former) reporters in post-Soviet states what it means to live in a country that’s in Russia’s shadow. How does the recent invasion reverberate in these countries, and how do they look at each other?

Starting from footage and stories the reporters collected over the years, we will talk about the need for alliances among post-Soviet states as well as their shared frustration to still be defined by their relation with Russia.

How do you keep fighting in a country that is terrorized by a dictator? In Belarus, this means dealing with teargas, state violence and fake news.

In this program, we will be looking into the mass protests in August 2020 with those who participated in them, those who organized them and those who wrote about them. We will also discuss their plans they have to remobilize the Belarusian population.

In Western Europe, we have learnt that democracy cannot be taken for granted. How do you inspire and activate people to care about democracy? Today we compare strategies.

About the speakers

Franak ​Viačorka is Belarusian politician, journalist and advisor to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Born activist, he was jailed multiple times by the Belarusian government.

Julia Cimafiejeva is a Belarusian poet and translator. Her journal of the massive protests in 2020 has been published recently in Dutch titled Dagen in Minsk.

Ilya Shcharbitski is an activist, living in the Netherlands. The political events taking place in Belarus have shaped the course of his activism.

Nog dagelijks staan de kranten vol met nieuwe onthullingen en wandaden van de overheid. Hoe kan het dat we een jaar later nog geen meter lijken te zijn opgeschoten? En wat moet er  gebeuren voor dit schandaal eindelijk is opgelost is? We bespreken het met Tweede Kamerlid Farid Azarkan, journalist Rik Rutten, filmmaker Stijn Bouma (Alleen tegen de staat) en slachtoffers Janet en Derya.

Over Plein Publiek

Plein Publiek is een talkshow, zoals talkshows bedoeld zijn. Presentator Yoeri Albrecht ontvangt politici, wetenschappers, filosofen en andere denkers. Gasten die niet alleen wat te vertellen hebben, maar daar nog de ruimte voor krijgen ook. Plein Publiek besteedt meer aandacht aan dialoog, duiding en debat dan aan decor. Wat er ter tafel komt vinden we nou eenmaal belangrijker dan hoe die tafel eruitziet.

Nathan Law, activist, former student leader and politician from Hong Kong will hold the 34th Freedom Lecture. He was one of the student leaders during the 79-day umbrella movement. After the protests, Law ended up in jail for several months. In 2020, Law left for London and began his self-exile. Since then, he speaks to governments around the world to get support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement and to raise awareness for the protection of freedom and democracy around the world.

Nathan Law analyzes the way in which freedom is more and more restricted in Hong Kong, and how those tactics aren’t bound to national borders. Democracy, human rights and freedom (of press) are under pressure more and more around the world. Authoritarian regimes are gradually taking power. Step by step, fundamental rights and civil liberties are shortened.

About the Speaker
Recently, Law published the book The Struggle for Freedom with Evan Fowler. Their message: beware of authoritarian regimes that take power by stealth. Subtly, institutions of the democratic rule of law are undermined and dismantled. With strict laws, citizens are cunningly silenced and, above all, made to fear the government. Time Magazine included him in the list of 100 most influential people of that year, and he was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Freedom Lecture
Freedom is something that we in the Netherlands often take for granted. Four times a year, De Balie invites someone who knows from personal experience what it means not to be free. We want to share their stories, spread their message, and learn from their struggle. In the series, De Balie has welcomed freedom fighters like Egyptian writer and activist Nawal el Saadawi, Ugandan LGBT activist Frank Mugisha, and Hungarian journalist Veronika Munk.

In de reeks Het Grote Schrijversinterview interviewt programmamaker (De Balie) Ianthe Mosselman grote schrijvers over hun werk. Dinsdag 24 mei wordt Vonne van der Meer in een diepte-interview bevraagd over haar werk aan de hand van fragmenten. Wat maakt een goed verhaal? Welke rol speelt geloof in haar werk? Aan welke levensvragen beantwoordt de literatuur?

Vonne van der Meer studeerde aan de Amsterdamse Theaterschool, schreef toneelstukken en heeft tien jaar geregisseerd. Ze debuteerde in 1985 met de verhalenbundel Het limonadegevoel en andere verhalen waar ze de Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs voor ontving. Met de roman-in-verhalen Eilandgasten (1999) kreeg ze veel bekendheid. De afgelopen jaren verschenen Naar Lillehammer en Vindeling en 23 mei verschijnt haar boek Gesprekken op maandag. Over de sacramenten.

In een interview met De Groene Amsterdammer zei van der Meer: ‘Ik geloof dat je altijd leven in je personage moet blazen, in al je personages, ook die op het eerste gezicht niet op je lijken, door er iets van jezelf in te leggen.’ Hoe doe je dat als schrijver? Dat ‘iets’ noemt ze something blue, maar wat is dat precies?

In deze serie interviewt programmamaker Ianthe Mosselman grote schrijvers die zij inspirerend vindt en die een imposant oeuvre hebben opgebouwd. Studenten die liegen over het volgen van een studie of zwijgen over dat ze gestopt zijn, is iets om ons zorgen over te maken. Zogeheten pretend- of spookstudenten leiden een dubbelleven en het geheim dat ze dragen weegt zwaar. Een geheim dat grote psychologische en sociale gevolgen heeft. Waarom voelen jongeren zich gedwongen om te liegen naar hun directe omgeving? Hoe is het om pretend-student te zijn? Wie is er verantwoordelijk voor het helpen van deze groep?

De mentale gezondheid van studenten staat al langer onder druk. Dat is duidelijk terug te zien in de toename van eenzaamheid, gevoelens van angst en depressies en een stijging van het aantal suïcides.

Daarom gaan we in een gesprek op zoek naar handvatten met voormalig pretend-studenten, huidige studenten en professionals. We doorbreken het taboe: hoe groot is deze groep studenten en hoe kunnen we ze helpen?

Sprekers

Samia Boukhizzou is algemeen bestuurslid bij JOB. JOB MBO is dé landelijke jongerenorganisatie die mbo-studenten een stem geeft in het onderwijs. Dit doen ze onder andere door studenten en studentenraden te informeren over hun rechten, mbo’ers te vertegenwoordigen richting media en politiek en door verschillende activiteiten te organiseren. Ze heeft onder andere de portefeuille studentenwelzijn.

Job van Ballegoijen de Jong (36) is bestuurssecretaris bij het advocatenkantoor De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, en mede-oprichter van Advocaatje Leef Je Nog, een coachingsinitiatief gericht op jonge juridische professionals die zich afvragen of ze op de goede plek zitten (en zo nee: hoe ze daar dan wel kunnen komen). Job was echter ook een zogenaamde “pretend-student”, die jarenlang deed alsof hij succesvol studeerde, terwijl het tegendeel het geval was. Dankzij een sterk vangnet is hij hier weer uit gekomen, met een voltooide studie International Criminal Law aan Columbia University in New York tot gevolg. 

Romke Biagioni werkt sinds 2004 als studentendecaan bij de Universiteit Leiden. Daarnaast is zij al jarenlang bestuurslid van het Landelijk Beraad Studentendecanen WO en momenteel voorzitter van de Commissie Studentenwelzijn. Als studentendecaan houdt zij zich bezig met studenten met een functiebeperking, de coaching en begeleiding van studenten met psychische problematiek, met name voor studenten met AD(H)D. Ook heeft zij veel ervaring met zorgwekkend gedrag bij studenten en de begeleiding van studenten met ernstige psychiatrische problematiek.

Ellen Klatter is lector Studiesucces aan Hogeschool Rotterdam. Haar onderzoek is gericht op onderwijskwaliteit, curriculumontwikkeling en leerprocessen. Van haar hand verscheen o.a. het adviesrapport Grip op Studiesucces. Daarnaast focust haar lectoraat Versterking Beroepsonderwijs op aansluiting en doorstroom in de beroepskolom. Klatter adviseert studenten, docenten en lerarenopleiders in de uitvoering van praktijkonderzoek en begeleidt masterstudenten en promovendi aan het hbo en wo. Ze is landelijk actief in diverse raden en wetenschappelijk lid van de programmacommissie Aansluiting (beroeps)Onderwijs en Arbeidsmarkt (NRO).

Rick Wolff is senior-onderzoeker bij Risbo, een aan de EUR verbonden onderzoeks- en onderwijsadviesbureau. Zijn onderzoek richt zich op diversiteit en inclusie in het hoger onderwijs. In zijn werk kijkt hij naar kenmerken van studenten die samenhangen met studiesucces en bestudeert hij welke contextuele factoren, zoals de door opleidingen aangeboden leeromgevingen, prestatieverschillen tussen studentgroepen kunnen verklaren en verkleinen. Naast zijn werk als onderzoeker ontwikkelt en geeft hij docenttrainingen diversiteit en inclusie in de klas en verzorgt hij een pre-bachelor module Studievaardigheden voor studenten met een vluchtelingachtergrond. Rick is lid van de NRO Expertgroep Toegankelijkheid Hoger Onderwijs.

Europe Day is a day celebrating “peace and unity in Europe”, in commemoration of the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. 

In a festival atmosphere, Europe Day tells the many stories of Europe and imagines a better Europe. It connects the local and the European, presents cultural solutions to European challenges, making our continent more inclusive, more democratic, more culturally aware and a better place to live.

This year, peace and unity in Europe are at stake. Putin’s war on Ukraine has brutally reminded us how relevant the founding narrative of the European Union and of Europe Day is. The future of Europe is made right now in our response to the war on Ukraine. Therefore, Europe Day ‘22 is labeled The Future is now!.

The French winemakers of OENOPE present wine tasting of their first pan European, borderless, wine.

The European Pavilion is an initiative by the European Cultural Foundation that supports and promotes artistic projects which encourage critical thinking and radical imagination, and fuel bold perspectives on Europe and our common future. Addressing the issue of democracy in Europe, and with Ukraine in our minds and hearts, this programme presents two of the projects developed as part of The European Pavilion.

Following a series of workshops and the international conference it organised in Ljubljana on 9-11 March 2022, the confederation of L’Internationale is launching the Democracy Pavilion for Europe Online: a platform that encourages ongoing and open debate and the recognition of art and museums as tools for experimentation and critical analysis of cultural and political Europe.

An open online platform, the antiwarcoalition.art is an initiative of six Belorussian artists and curators who call on artists from all around the world to contribute with their works against war and dehumanization, and express solidarity with those in Ukraine who are affected by military aggression, colonial, patriarchal, imperialistic, and political repression, and those resisting terror.

Charles Essche (director of the van Abbe Museum, Netherlands and co-curator of The Democracy Pavilion), and Antonina Stebur & Maxim Tyminko (respectively curator and artist, both co-initiators of antiwarcoalition.art) will introduce their initiatives, while reflecting together on questions such as: What does democracy mean in these current, dark times? How can we both seek to defend the limited space for thought and action that we still have and push for a new sense of the good life and care of the planet we share?

The discussion will be followed by the screening of the documentary film Judges Under Pressure by Polish director Kacper Lisowski. Presented in collaboration with IDFA, the film follows the Polish judge Igor Tuleya, the face of the protest movement against the PiS government, as he works both inside and outside the courtroom. His black humor brings an occasional note of lightness to this urgent and shocking topic, without detracting from the seriousness of the constitutional horror scenario unfolding in this EU member state.
