Stefan Malešević is een filmregisseur uit Belgrado en woont sinds 2019 met zijn gezin in Nederland. Stefan studeerde filmregie onder het mentorschap van Béla Tarr aan de Sarajevo Film Academy. Na meerdere korte films, reclames en muziekvideo’s te hebben geregisseerd, maakte hij drie bekroonde langspeelfilms – Gora, een documentaire die de levensstijl van de Gorani-herders in de ruige bergen in Kosovo laat zien; Mamonga, een magisch-realistische draai aan het typische Oost-Europese sociale drama; en Soil and Wings, een documentaire die gendergelijkheid in beeld brengt waar je het het minst zou verwachten – in een gemeenschap van vrome moslims die zich wijden aan hun gezin en traditie op de Balkan.
Als filmredacteur bij De Balie probeert hij een goede balans te vinden tussen maatschappelijk betrokken en cinematisch zichtbaar indrukwekkende films. De films in de specials zijn altijd in een bredere context te plaatsen (macroniveau) en in de gesprekken voor- of achteraf bespreekt Stefan de diepere betekenis achter het project. Daarom maakt hij graag series, zoals Kyiv Critics’ Week x NL of Shifting Pictures.
