De nieuwste expositie van Beri Shalmashi, The Fire In Their Eyes, volgt de diepe wortels van jin, jiyan, azadî (vrouw, leven, vrijheid), de leus die zich als een draaikolk door het Midden-Oosten beweegt. In veel van het werk van Shalmashi staat de filosofie van jin, jiyan, azadî centraal. Hoe maak je kunst vanuit deze filosofie?

Beri Shalmashi is geboren uit Koerdische ouders die in de jaren tachtig Iran ontvluchtten, ze groeide op in Nederland. Shalmashi won diverse prijzen, waaronder de Zilveren Camera voor Storytelling – met Big Village. Ook is ze bekend door het duiden van de protesten tegen het Iraanse regime in 2022 in verschillende Nederlandse media.

Schrijver en activist Bregje Hofstede schreef een autofictie roman over bevallingspijn, seks en een ayahuascatrip. Hofstede onderzoekt in Oersoep het verlangen naar zelfverlies in een onttoverde tijd. Hoe is iets lichamelijks als een bevalling, dan wel een ayuhuascatrip, te vatten in taal? En hoe verhoudt Hofstede zich tot het schrijven van autofictie en persoonlijke non-fictie?

Bregje Hofstede (1988) is een veelzijdige en veelgeprezen schrijver en activist. Ze is actief binnen XR en is medeoprichter van feministische actiegroep De Bovengrondse en Stichting Nationaal Heksenmonument.

Vrijheid is van levensbelang. Hoe vrij zijn we in een land dat te maken heeft met een toeslagenschandaal, een woningcrisis en een oorlog op Europees grondgebied? Vrijheden beschermen vereist gedeelde waarden en gezamenlijk vertrouwen in de democratie. Tegelijkertijd gedijt vrijheid ook bij meningsverschillen, bij frictie tussen de ideeën van de één en de ander. En dus bij het voeren van goede gesprekken.

Hackers droomden in de jaren 80 van een open, democratisch internet. Gewapend met computers en idealen, kraakten ze systemen om een revolutie in de digitale wereld te starten. Waarom deden ze dat, en wat is er over van hun idealen? In gesprek met Maarten Reijnders, schrijver van De Hackers die Nederland veranderden.

Midden jaren 80, Nederland: het ene na het andere computersysteem wordt gekraakt door een groep idealistische jongeren die via kleine netwerken met elkaar verbonden zijn. Wat dan volgt, is de grootste kraak: ze beginnen een eigen internetaanbieder, XS4ALL. ‘De hackers die Nederland veranderden’, is de titel van het nieuwe boek van journalist Maarten Reijnders. Een portret over de geschiedenis van de totstandkoming van het internet in Nederland.

De Balie en Hack-Tic (later XS4ALL) startte in 1994 het initiatief de Digitale Stad. Voor het eerst was het internet in Amsterdam bereikbaar voor het grote publiek. Een half jaar later, telde het 100.000 gebruikers. Tijdens deze avond gaan we in gesprek over het internet in relatie tot de democratie en de invloed hiervan op de vrijheid van meningsuiting.

Over ‘onmaatschappelijkheid’ spreken we vandaag de dag niet meer. Wel over armoede, tweedeling, parallelle samenlevingen, afgehaakten. Deze stad kent nog steeds sociaal-economische en sociaal-culturele armoede en uitsluiting. In onze stad leven meer dan 7000 gezinnen in armoede. Hun inkomens behoren gemiddeld tot de laagste van Nederland. Hoe kan dat, en wat kunnen we daaraan doen?

In 2020 werd het ‘Aanvalsplan Armoede Maastricht’ gelanceerd, met de ambitie om voor 2030 de armoede in Maastricht onder het landelijke gemiddelde te brengen. Waar staan we eind 2023 in de ontwikkeling van die ambitie? Nu de term bestaanszekerheid ge(her)ïntroduceerd is in de politiek en de bestrijding van armoede weer hoog op de agenda staat, is het tijd om de balans op te maken!

In dit debat kijken we terug op de ‘Crapuulperiode’ en bieden we een kritische beschouwing vanuit maatschappelijk en politiek perspectief. Onder leiding van Lennart Booij gaat een expertpanel en het publiek met elkaar in debat in twee rondes.

Crapuul, een scheldwoord voor de ‘onmaatschappelijken’ in Maastricht, voor mensen die moesten ‘resocialiseren’. En ook de titel van het recente boek van Frank Bokern, ‘Crapuul, kroniek van een krottenwijk’ over Maastricht in de periode van 1840 tot 1982.

Frank Bokern, schrijver van ‘Crapuul, Kroniek van een Krottenwijk’ en Leonie Ruiter, Hoofd Fondsenwerving Jeugdeducatiefonds trappen de debatrondes af met een prikkelende introductie. Het panel bestaat uit (onder meer) Huup Peters, Samen Uit De Armoede, Maastrichtse Donutcoalitie en Uschi Prick, directeur Quiet Community Maastricht en tenslotte René Gabriels, universitair docent filosofie en vrijwilliger bij de voedselbank. Zij geven hun reflectie op de stand van zaken en aanpak van armoede in Maastricht. Vanzelfsprekend hebben wij ook de gemeente uitgenodigd.

Over deze samenwerking

Dit programma is onderdeel van De Balie on Tour. De Balie gaat met verschillende podia in het land een samenwerking aan om programma’s te maken over onderwerpen die dicht bij de inwoners liggen. Thema’s als jeugdcriminaliteit, ongelijkheid en vertrouwen in de overheid komen voorbij. Met de tour wil De Balie gesprekken tussen partijen mogelijk maken over de plaatselijke problematiek waar inwoners mee te maken hebben.
