We leven in een aandachtseconomie die in grote mate ons perspectief op de wereld bepaalt. Algoritmes bevestigen constant onze standpunten, voorkeuren en vooroordelen. Deze filterbubbels hebben onmiskenbaar invloed op de politieke arena, en vormen volgens sommigen een gevaar voor onze democratie. Maar technologie biedt ook kansen om deze tendensen het hoofd te bieden.

Zo worden zaken als inspraak en participatie laagdrempeliger en beter bereikbaar voor grotere groepen. Bovendien is het maar zeer de vraag of technologie de oorzaak is, of vooral een voeder van al bestaande tendensen uit de samenleving, zoals polarisatie, wantrouwen en radicalisering.

Is de digitale tijd voor de democratie een zegen of een vloek? Hoe kan digitale democratie juist bijdragen aan de toegankelijkheid en concreet zeggenschap over je eigen leefgebied?

Dit bespreken we onder meer met Rudy van Belkom en Kathalijne Buitenweg die betogen dat er hoop is voor de democratie. Hervorming van het internet, minder ruimte voor big tech en meer voor lokale initiatieven; in zijn boek Alive and Clicking: er is hoop voor de democratie pleit Van Belkom voor een wereldwijde digitale democratische revolutie. Hij vindt daarin onder anderen Kathalijne Buitenweg op zijn pad, die een vrij internet toch ook ziet als een plaag voor autoritaire regimes, maar als adviseur van de Raad van State tegelijkertijd waarschuwt voor de gevaren van big data. Journalist Marcel ten Hooven, die voor o.a. De Groene al meer dan 30 jaar over democratie schrijft, schuift aan om de tendensen te duiden die ook Van Belkom en Kathalijne Buitenweg voelen.

Over de sprekers:

Rudy van Belkom is onderzoeker aan de Stichting Toekomstbeeld der Techniek, waar hij sinds kort ook directeur van is. In zijn boek Alive And Clicking betoogt hij dat we hoopvoller met technologie om mogen gaan dan we nu doen. Ook debunked hij een paar hardnekkige vooroordelen over apolitieke jongeren en microtargeting. 

Kathalijne Buitenweg is sinds 1 juni 2021 staatsraad in de Afdeling advisering van de Raad van State. Tussen 2017 en 2021 zat zij namens GroenLinks in de Tweede Kamer en was daar vicefractievoorzitter, woordvoerster justitie, politie en veiligheid en mede-oprichter van de Tijdelijke Commissie Digitale Toekomst. In 2021 schreef zij het boek Datamacht en tegenkracht, waarin zij burgers en internetgebruikers oproept om in opstand te komen tegen de dataverzamelwoede van grote technbedrijven en de overheid.

Marcel ten Hooven is journalist voor de Groene Amsterdammer en schreef voorheen voor o.a. Vrij Nederland en dagblad Trouw. Als journalist is hij geïnteresseerd in de economie, politiek en democratie. Hij is auteurs van het boek De ontmanteling van de democratie en is de samensteller van het boek Ware tolerantie. Hoe we onszelf kunnen zijn en elkaar toch kunnen verdragen.

Dealing with Russia

With this four-part program series, we want to provide in-depth analysis of current affairs and facilitate nuanced debate, thus making complex material accessible. How have Russian-Western relations changed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, how does Russia view its relations with former Soviet States, and what motivates the EU, NATO and the USA? These programs will also focus on the hybrid forms of warfare, such as cyber- and psychological warfare, and economic sanctions. In order to understand the current state of affairs, Dealing with Russia will focus on the larger historical, societal and cultural context.

Wat betekent het om altijd op je hoede te zijn voor je achternaam, je afkomst, je dubbele nationaliteit? In opdracht van Likeminds schrijven drie jonge theaterschrijvers nieuwe toneelstukken over institutioneel racisme in Nederland: De affaires. In De Balie worden de teksten voor het eerst voorgedragen voor publiek en gaan we erover in gesprek met het publiek en gastsprekers.

In de tweede aflevering staat de affaire van voormalig antiradicaliseringsambtenaar Saadia Ait-Taleb centraal die betrokken was bij de geheime grijze campagne van de gemeente om radicalisering te bestrijden. In 2017 kreeg ze strafontslag door wijlen burgemeester Van der Laan. Drie jaar later wordt ze door de rechter in de strafzaak “van alle blaam gezuiverd.”

Schrijver Vera Morina schreef een theatertekst gebaseerd op gesprekken met Saadia Ait-Taleb. Vanavond wordt de tekst voor het eerst voorgedragen voor publiek. Journalist Joris Luyendijk (auteur van o.a. De zeven vinkjes) en Fatima Elatik (oud-politicus en bestuurder) geven een eerste reactie. Vervolgens gaan we in gesprek met het publiek.

In opdracht van Likeminds schrijven de drie jonge theaterschrijvers Maxine Palit de Jongh, Vera Morina en Shabnam Baqhiri nieuwe toneelstukken over institutioneel racisme in Nederland: De Affaires. Beginnend met lezingen in De Balie eindigen De Affaires als volwaardige theatervoorstellingen bij Likeminds in Amsterdam-Noord tussen 20 en 25 september. Likeminds en De Balie willen de vinger op de zere plek leggen en met deze teksten de huidige staat van institutioneel racisme in Nederland onderzoeken.

It’s been three months since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the future is still unclear. In this program, we will discuss how Europe should react. Natalia Antelava is a Georgian journalist and co-founder of Codastory. She is an Emmy nominee and was short-listed for the European Press Prize.

Ruben Brekelmans is a member of Dutch Parliament for the VVD. He is a member of the commision on Foreign Affairs and a delegate to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.

Thijs Reuten is a member of the European Parliament for the PvdA. He is a shadow rapporteur on Belarus.

The war in Ukraine has made it abundantly clear that we’ve not been listening enough to states bordering on Russia. Whether from the Baltic area or from the Caucasus, from Belarus or from Kazakhstan, everyone’s asking: who’s next?

In this program, we will discuss with (former) reporters in post-Soviet states what it means to live in a country that’s in Russia’s shadow. How does the recent invasion reverberate in these countries, and how do they look at each other?

Starting from footage and stories the reporters collected over the years, we will talk about the need for alliances among post-Soviet states as well as their shared frustration to still be defined by their relation with Russia.

How do you keep fighting in a country that is terrorized by a dictator? In Belarus, this means dealing with teargas, state violence and fake news.

In this program, we will be looking into the mass protests in August 2020 with those who participated in them, those who organized them and those who wrote about them. We will also discuss their plans they have to remobilize the Belarusian population.

In Western Europe, we have learnt that democracy cannot be taken for granted. How do you inspire and activate people to care about democracy? Today we compare strategies.

Franak ​Viačorka is Belarusian politician, journalist and advisor to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. Born activist, he was jailed multiple times by the Belarusian government.

Julia Cimafiejeva is a Belarusian poet and translator. Her journal of the massive protests in 2020 has been published recently in Dutch titled Dagen in Minsk.

Ilya Shcharbitski is an activist, living in the Netherlands. The political events taking place in Belarus have shaped the course of his activism.

Nog dagelijks staan de kranten vol met nieuwe onthullingen en wandaden van de overheid. Hoe kan het dat we een jaar later nog geen meter lijken te zijn opgeschoten? En wat moet er  gebeuren voor dit schandaal eindelijk is opgelost is? We bespreken het met Tweede Kamerlid Farid Azarkan, journalist Rik Rutten, filmmaker Stijn Bouma (Alleen tegen de staat) en slachtoffers Janet en Derya.

Over Plein Publiek

Plein Publiek is een talkshow, zoals talkshows bedoeld zijn. Presentator Yoeri Albrecht ontvangt politici, wetenschappers, filosofen en andere denkers. Gasten die niet alleen wat te vertellen hebben, maar daar nog de ruimte voor krijgen ook. Plein Publiek besteedt meer aandacht aan dialoog, duiding en debat dan aan decor. Wat er ter tafel komt vinden we nou eenmaal belangrijker dan hoe die tafel eruitziet.

Nathan Law, activist, former student leader and politician from Hong Kong will hold the 34th Freedom Lecture. He was one of the student leaders during the 79-day umbrella movement. After the protests, Law ended up in jail for several months. In 2020, Law left for London and began his self-exile. Since then, he speaks to governments around the world to get support for Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement and to raise awareness for the protection of freedom and democracy around the world.

Nathan Law analyzes the way in which freedom is more and more restricted in Hong Kong, and how those tactics aren’t bound to national borders. Democracy, human rights and freedom (of press) are under pressure more and more around the world. Authoritarian regimes are gradually taking power. Step by step, fundamental rights and civil liberties are shortened.

About the Speaker
Recently, Law published the book The Struggle for Freedom with Evan Fowler. Their message: beware of authoritarian regimes that take power by stealth. Subtly, institutions of the democratic rule of law are undermined and dismantled. With strict laws, citizens are cunningly silenced and, above all, made to fear the government. Time Magazine included him in the list of 100 most influential people of that year, and he was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Freedom Lecture
Freedom is something that we in the Netherlands often take for granted. Four times a year, De Balie invites someone who knows from personal experience what it means not to be free. We want to share their stories, spread their message, and learn from their struggle. In the series, De Balie has welcomed freedom fighters like Egyptian writer and activist Nawal el Saadawi, Ugandan LGBT activist Frank Mugisha, and Hungarian journalist Veronika Munk.

In de reeks Het Grote Schrijversinterview interviewt programmamaker (De Balie) Ianthe Mosselman grote schrijvers over hun werk. Dinsdag 24 mei wordt Vonne van der Meer in een diepte-interview bevraagd over haar werk aan de hand van fragmenten. Wat maakt een goed verhaal? Welke rol speelt geloof in haar werk? Aan welke levensvragen beantwoordt de literatuur?

Vonne van der Meer studeerde aan de Amsterdamse Theaterschool, schreef toneelstukken en heeft tien jaar geregisseerd. Ze debuteerde in 1985 met de verhalenbundel Het limonadegevoel en andere verhalen waar ze de Geertjan Lubberhuizenprijs voor ontving. Met de roman-in-verhalen Eilandgasten (1999) kreeg ze veel bekendheid. De afgelopen jaren verschenen Naar Lillehammer en Vindeling en 23 mei verschijnt haar boek Gesprekken op maandag. In een interview met De Groene Amsterdammer zei van der Meer: ‘Ik geloof dat je altijd leven in je personage moet blazen, in al je personages, ook die op het eerste gezicht niet op je lijken, door er iets van jezelf in te leggen.’ Hoe doe je dat als schrijver? Dat ‘iets’ noemt ze something blue, maar wat is dat precies?

In deze serie interviewt programmamaker Ianthe Mosselman grote schrijvers die zij inspirerend vindt en die een imposant oeuvre hebben opgebouwd.
