Performer en theatermaker Max Wind was dit jaar artist in residence bij De Balie. Als afsluiting van deze residentie schrijft, regisseert en speelt hij deze voorstelling over het publieke debat. Samen met een vijftal andere acteurs ensceneert hij een avond die anders loopt dan verwacht. 

In onze programmareeks Onbekende Schrijvers zou debutant Aukje Romming vertellen over haar nieuwe boek. Door enorme ophef, de controverse en de protesten rondom het boek, heeft Aukje gisteren afgebeld. Omdat wij vrijheid van meningsuiting en democratie hoog in het vaandel hebben staan, hebben we besloten het gesprek toch door te laten gaan. Ditmaal zonder Aukje, wat natuurlijk erg jammer is, dat begrijpt u wel.

We proberen op dit moment – heel last minute allemaal – potentiële sprekers te bereiken, tot op heden zonder succes. Hopelijk hebben we om 20:00 een goed gevulde zaal met enthousiast publiek en sprekers met kennis waar uw broek vanaf zakt.

In Gedeelde grond, een serie gesprekken die door samenwerking tussen De Balie de Rabobank tot stand komt, gaan we op zoek naar de gemene delers tussen agrariërs, voedselproducenten, beleidsmakers, ontwerpers, en natuurbeschermers, om tot een constructieve dialoog te kunnen komen over de toekomst van de voedselproductie in Nederland.

Dit gesprek vindt plaats in Oost-Brabant, een regio waar de voedselproductie een grote stempel drukt op de natuur en de leefomgeving. Hier vraagt de gebiedsgerichte aanpak om flinke verandering van de hele voedselketen. We nemen pas op de plaats en gaan op zoek naar meerjarig perspectief voor een gezond landschap.

Welke handschoen moet de industrie rondom het boerenerf oppakken om zorg te dragen voor het landschap, de bodem en de leefomgeving? Waar liggen de kansen om de groeiende stedelijke bevolking te voeden met duurzaam geteelde en lokale producten. En hoe kunnen we er ook nog eens voor zorgen dat de producent een boterham blijft verdienen?

They are both self-taught and have been conquering the international scene with their daring, outspoken and political designs: Zimbabwean artist, graphic designer and activist Sindiso Nyoni and the Rotterdam based fashion designer and dancer Odair Pereira, founder of DAIR design. At Afrovibes these two creative and activist artists meet on stage for the first time. How do they move as independent artists between activism and the commercial market? Can you be a socially engaged and activist artist and simultaneously work for commercial enterprises and corporations?

About the speakers

Sindiso Nyoni is featured guest of this year´s Afrovibes festival. He participated in art exhibitions worldwide and also works for big clients like Nike, Adidas and FIFA. His work has been shown in New York, London, Berlin, The Vitra Design Museum in Germany, Guggenheim Bilbao Museum and Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City among others. As a designer, he designed for brands such as Hennesy, Caltex, Penguin Random House and Stella Artois. His Guerilla(art) is a subversive African ´street´ style that combines traditional and digital media and tackles some of Africa´s most pressing issues.

Odair Pereira is an award-winning fashion designer, a stylist for international stars and a creative entrepreneur. More than 10 years ago he founded DAIR design, a couture inspired by high end fashion line. He presented his collections at the Fashion Week in Paris, New York and in Los Angeles.

Na jaren van politiek beleid gericht op efficiëntie dreigt nu een grootschalige zorgcrisis werkelijkheid te worden. De stand van de zorg wordt gekenmerkt door personeelstekorten, te hoge werkdruk, lange wachtlijsten en alsmaar stijgende kosten. De vraag naar zorg overstijgt het aanbod en zorgmedewerkers moeten te veel doen in te weinig tijd. Ergo: een zorgsysteem dat draait om efficiëntie, maakt alles kapot, stelt Correspondent Zorg Lynn Berger. Met o.a. Berger gaat De Balie op zoek naar oplossingen voor dit probleem.

Iedereen heeft zorg nodig. Zonder zorg worden kinderen niet groot, zieken niet beter en ouderen niet oud. Zorg is waar de menselijke beschaving mee begon en wat de maatschappij iedere dag draaiende houdt. Dit lijken we te zijn vergeten, want we denderen keihard op de grootste zorgcrisis ooit af. Als we niets doen aan de huidige stand van de zorg moet per 2060 één op de drie mensen actief zijn in de zorg, om het te kunnen bolwerken.

Hoe zijn we hier terecht gekomen, en hoe komen we er weer uit? Wat is er nodig om zorg te zien voor wat het waard is? Een avond met Lynn Berger, econoom Jasper van Dijk, lector zorg om naasten Erica Witkamp en verpleegkundige Thomas Smits over wat zorg is en zou moeten zijn, en wat er moet gebeuren om zorg de tijd en ruimte te geven die het verdient. 

Over de sprekers

Lynn Berger is schrijver en journalist. Zij schreef onder meer voor de Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Vrij Nederland en De Groene Amsterdammer. Nu is zij nu correspondent Zorg bij de Correspondent.

Thomas Smits is Intensive Care verpleegkundige bij het Amsterdam UMC. Daarnaast is hij voorzitter van Nurse Minded, dat als missie heeft de werkomstandigheden van verpleegkundigen te verbeteren.

Erica Witkamp is sinds 2019 lector zorg om naasten, waarbij de focus van haar lectoraat ligt op twee vragen: Hoe kunnen zorgprofessionals de naasten (familie, vrienden) ondersteunen om voor iemand te kunnen zorgen, te kunnen participeren en daarbij zelf overeind te blijven?

Jasper van Dijk is econoom met als missie het aanpakken van maatschappelijke en sociale uitdagingen met beter onderbouwd beleid. Dit doet hij vanuit het platform De Onderbouwing en in samenwerking met het Instituut voor Publieke Economie. Jasper is gepromoveerd in de Economie aan de Universiteit van Oxford en heeft gewerkt bij de OESO, de Boston Consulting Group en het ministerie van Financiën. Als wetenschapper, consultant en ambtenaar heeft hij tien jaar ervaring met het onderzoeken van en adviseren over maatschappelijke vraagstukken.

How can you decolonize the black body? Both South-African dancer Kwanele Finch Thusi and theatre and dance director Igor Vrebac question the way how western society look at the male body. When is a body perceived as exotic, strong or vulnerable? With their work, they are building a new mythology of black and queer bodies and identities. We speak with both artists about their work and discuss the ways in which performance can reclaim the male body.

As black people, our bodies are still seen as exotic exhibitions for freedom. I ask the complicated questions in this work, what do you see when you look at me? With so much of conflict that arose in 2020 & 2021, the Black Lives Matter movement underpinned the necessity and purpose of this work.

About the speakers

Kwanele Finch Thusi is a teacher, entrepeneur and director. He teaches dance and youth development workshops in Sweden, Mozambique, Ghana, Kenya and Namibia. In dance he focuses on topics such as African queer identity, African diaspora and genealogy. Thusi is co-choreographer, story developer and coordinator for Netflix’s Dance Series ‘Jiva’ and released his first book entitled ‘Man Escaped’ which celebrates the body in all its forms and expressions. Kwanele Finch Thusi was elected Mr Africa International in 2021 and lives and works in Johannesburg.

Igor Vrebac (1986) graduated from acting and directing at the Amsterdam School of Arts (AhK) in 2012. He has performed in different theatre performances in the Netherlands and abroad, appeared in several Dutch TV series and film productions. In 2016, he directed his first physical theatre performance Macho Macho, for which he received the Dioraphte Best of Amsterdam Fringe award.

With theatre maker Bright Richards, Mandy Woelkens, poet & director Hakim Bah & Jay Pather, artistic director of Afrovibes, and others we discuss this year’s festival theme: Rupture | Rapture. There is intense pleasure and delight that we get from our contact with other cultures. With this comes an awareness of the tensions and divisions that historically have arisen and do continue to arise between people and cultures. It is this paradox, the tension and the pleasure, that characterizes the relationship between Europe and the African continent in general.

How do we deal with our shared past? A past that has produced everything from the slave trade, through colonization, as well as migration. Out of this, the culturally rich African Diaspora emerged, and Black identity developed across the globe. The questions we pose have to do with checking in on who we are today, within a multicultural society, how do we connect to our shared past, how do we look at each other, and what may be the role of the artists in this realm of this rupture and rapture. Ultimately, these questions need to be approached from an African and a European perspective.

About the speakers

Bright Richards is a writer, theatre maker/director, and trainer. In 2004, he founded New Dutch Connections, a foundation that supports non-Western artists and refugees in using their voice. With New Dutch Connections, he directed the play ‘As I Left My Father’s House’, which is an exploration of interconnectedness between people of different religious-cultural backgrounds.

Hakim Bah, born in Guinea, is the author of several award-winning plays. He now lives in France and is artistic director of the festival Univers des Mots in Guinea.

Jay Pather is artistic director of Afrovibes. He is a South African curator and choreographer. He is also director at Institute for Creating Arts (ICA) in Cape Town and Professor at the University of Cape Town. In his work, he strives to make theatre and dance from multiple African countries accessible to a wider audience.

To be a performance artist, you have to hate theatre. Theatre is fake… The knife is not real, the blood is not real, and the emotions are not real. Performance is just the opposite: the knife is real, the blood is real, and the emotions are real.

Marina Abramović

Marina Abramović and Yoel Gamzou are currently working together on Abramović music theatre production Seven Deaths of Maria Callas.

Speakers

Marina Abramović (Serbia, 1946) is widely known for her confrontational performance artwork in which human endurance is key, and the members of the audience also play a role in it. Like an almost scientific experiment, she exposes the nature of human being in such performances. Because she uses her own body as an artistic material, her work is considered part of the art movement of body art.

She refers to herself as the “grandmother of performance art”. Her most famous work is no doubt The artist is present (2010) at the MOMA in New York, where she sat on a chair for about 850 hours and looked people into their eyes. Before she moved to New York in 1991, she lived in Amsterdam for 25 years.

Yoel Gamzou (Israel, 1987) grew up in New York, London and Tel Aviv and started playing the cello at the age of four. In 2006 Gamzou founded the International Mahler Orchestra (IMO), becoming its artistic director and principal conductor.

He conducted orchestras including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphoniker Hamburg and the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker. He was awarded the ECHO Klassik for young conductors in 2017. Yoel Gamzou is currently general music director of the Theatre Bremen.

This is the third episode of The Hugo van Berckel Artists Talks, a three-part series in which Yoel Gamzou, under the direction of Yoeri Albrecht, talks to another internationally renowned performing artist. The opposite guest comes from a different generation or from another art discipline, but shares one thing with Gamzou: making art On Stage… The former two guests were Ivo van Hove and Milo Rau.

We staan aan het begin van een nieuw en zwaar politiek jaar, met meerdere crises waar we mee moeten dealen. De nieuwe wethouders staan dus voor nogal wat uitdagingen. Tijd voor een reeks interviews met de nieuwe wethouders van Amsterdam. Wat is hun visie op de huidige crises en welke plannen en ambities hebben zij voor de komende bestuursperiode? Op 13 oktober is Zita Pels (GroenLinks), wethouder Duurzaamheid, te gast.

Pels is, zoals ze zelf zegt, niet van de visies, maar van de acties. Dat is nodig ook, want de ambities van het stadsbestuur zijn flink. In 2030 moet er 60 procent minder CO2-uitstoot zijn. Opmerkelijk, schrijft het Parool, want Amsterdam is nog ver verwijderd van de ambities. ‘Zo loopt het bijvoorbeeld hopeloos vast op het overvolle elektriciteitsnet, essentieel voor een versnelling van de energietransitie.’ We gaan met Pels in gesprek over haar aanpak voor deze en andere dringende uitdagingen binnen haar portefeuille. 

Tijdens het programma is er ook ruimte voor vragen uit de zaal.

Zita Pels is wethouder Duurzaamheid en beheert de portefeuilles Duurzaamheid, Energietransitie en Circulaire economie, Volkshuisvesting, Dierenwelzijn, Afval en Reiniging en Voedsel. Ze is sinds 2013 actief in de politiek.
