For three days contemporary artists from Uganda, Mozambique, Namibi, South Africa and the Netherlands meet on stage at De Balie for the 18^th edition of Afrovibes festival. With dance, spoken word, conversations and music.

This night, together with leading opinionistas, co-hosts Ikenna Azuike and Ms. Aba will explore the themes that inspire Africa’s new brand of creatives: What do African identities mean to tradition and modern trends, to reality and phantasy, to the African continent and Europe? What moves these African performing artists? How do they present their worlds?

About the speakers

Trixie Munyama is a movement performer, choreographer, and facilitator. She is currently a lecturer in Dance Studies at the College of the Arts, Windhoek.

Babah Tarawally is a journalist and writer. After fleeing his mother country Sierra Leone, Tarawally published several novels based on personal experiences and African philosophy. He’s a columnist for the Dutch newspaper Trouw.

Jelili Atiku is a Nigerian multimedia performance artist and sculptor with political concerns for human rights and justice. His performance with drawing, photography, installation sculpture, video and live performance have made him one of the most recognized performance artists from Nigeria around the world.

Lisette Ma Neza is a slam poet and musician. She is born in the Netherlands, but lives in Brussels where is doing film studies.

MS. ABA (also known as Augustina Austin), is a multi-faceted artist: a presenter, broadcaster, public speaker, performerand creative entrepreneur.

In the dance performance Smeer Namibian choreographer Trixie Munyama explores where modernity and tradition, gender and identity meet.

A group of Ovahimbas gather in Katutura, the black township of Windhoek in Namibia. They are together for a healing ritual. A young woman enters and undergoes a change; she takes the manners and behaviour of an elderly man. The majority of the group is male but there is a woman quietly smoking a pipe and observing everything. The ceremony is engulfed by the bustle of the township. In the bustle of a contemporary African city Smeer moves in two worlds, those of time and space, past and present, illusion and reality.

The need to party, touch each other and celebrate life is bigger than ever. Symphony of 21 is the last part of a triptych about the music scene in Uganda and The Netherlands. An interactive nightclub performance that challenges the audience to give itself completely to the beat.

Symphony of 21 is part of a three-year cooperation between DOX,  Batalo East, ArtBeat Amsterdam en Afrovibes.

Our (heart)beat, vulnerability, intimacy and sensuality are central, in fact our identity. On the dance floor, we are closer to each other and we experience touches that we easily avoid in everyday life. What will that experience be like after Covid-19? Chairs away, feet on the floor, dancers and audience become one . Everything corona proof of course.

Afgelopen mei werd er opnieuw een staatsgreep gepleegd in Mali – al de derde sinds 2012. Naast politieke onrust, groeit de activiteit van terroristische groepen. Sommigen zijn gelieerd aan Al-Qaida, zoals de Touareg-rebellen in het noorden van het land. Anderen zijn verbonden aan Islamitische Staat. Hoeveel invloed heb je als ambassadeur van Nederland in Mali? En hoe is het contact met een overheid die continu gebukt gaat onder staatsgrepen? We gaan in gesprek met Marchel Gerrmann, onze man in Mali.

Een stabiel Mali is de wens van de lokale bevolking, maar ook in het Nederlands en Europees belang. De Arabische lente bracht chaos in Libië en Egypte, en aan Al-Qaida gelieerde troepen breiden hun activiteiten rap uit in de Sahel. Nederland was van 2014 tot 2019 onderdeel van de Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), de VN-vredesmissie die Mali veiliger moest maken. Inmiddels is de algemene conclusie dat deze missie weinig effect heeft gehad op de veiligheid en stabiliteit van het land.

Het Westen vreest dat Mali een jihadistische springplank naar Europa wordt. Daarnaast heeft Europa handelsbelangen in het gebied, een instabiel Mali kan die handel verstoren. Wat kan er wél gedaan worden om de stabiliteit in Mali te vergroten? En welke rol heeft Nederland daar in?

Onze Man / Vrouw in…
Dit programma is onderdeel van de serie Onze Man / Vrouw in…. Een serie die we maken in samenwerking met het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken, waarin een Nederlandse ambassadeur wordt uitgenodigd om zijn of haar ervaring te delen. In vorige afleveringen waren de ambassadeurs uit Jemen, Marokko, Iran, Irak, Jordanië, Egypte, Zuid-Afrika en Benin te gast.

Het nieuwe klimaatrapport van VN-klimaatpanel IPCC windt er geen doekjes om. Het is een urgente en snoeiharde oproep voor mondiale, nationale en lokale actie. Zien we de nood voor klimaatactie terug in het koffertje? Op de avond vóór Prinsjesdag bekijken we de economie door de bril van het klimaat.

Demissionair minister-president Mark Rutte noemt het IPCC-rapport ‘zeer zorgelijk’, maar ziet wel een kans weggelegd voor Nederland om ‘de nummer één in de Olympische Spelen van het klimaat te worden’. Daar is dan wel veel voor nodig: op dit moment loopt Nederland achter op de klimaatdoelen. Wordt Prinsjesdag een eerste mijlpaal?

Met het IPCC rapport in het achterhoofd en de klimaattop in Glasgow voor de boeg zijn de ogen op het koffertje gericht. Daarin wachten de Rijksbegroting en de Miljoenennota op hun publieke onthulling én wordt duidelijk hoeveel de klimaatplannen mogen kosten.

Wat komt er terecht van Rutte’s nieuwgevonden olympische strijdlust? Met klimaatwetenschapper Bart van der Hurk en een econoom bespreken we het gat tussen economie en klimaat. Daarna gaan de jongerenafdelingen van de VVD, CDA, GroenLinks en D66 met elkaar in debat over dit thema.

Sprekers:

Bart van den Hurk is één van de hoofdauteurs van het nieuwste IPCC-rapport en klimaatexpert bij onderzoeksbureau Deltares.

Jacqueline Cramer is ruim veertig jaar werkzaam op het milieuterrein. Van 2007 tot 2010 was ze Minister van Volkshuisvesting, Ruimtelijke Ordening en Milieubeheer (PvdA). Momenteel is ze Hoogleraar duurzaam innoveren aan de Universiteit Utrecht.

Wat is vrijheid voor jou, wat betekent dit voor de vrijheid van anderen, en hoe draag jij bij aan vrijheid?

Burgemeester Schuurmans gaat op bezoek bij het Nova College Hoofddorp om met de studenten in gesprek te gaan over vrijheid, democratie en actief burgerschap.

Mondkapjesplicht, gelimiteerd contact met geliefden, de eerste avondklok sinds de Tweede Wereldoorlog: 2020 was een crisisjaar. Nooit eerder werd deze generatie dusdanig in haar vrijheden beperkt. Nu er langzamerhand licht aan het eind van de tunnel verschijnt, zijn gesprekken over vrijheid of de beperking daarvan belangrijker dan ooit. Het Nationaal Gesprek over Vrijheid is een gesprek tussen generaties, tussen studenten van het middelbaar beroepsonderwijs en bestuurlijk Nederland over burgerschap en democratie. Hoe krijgen we onze vrijheden weer terug? In wat voor maatschappij willen we leven en hoe werken we hier naartoe?

De dag voor de onthulling van het voltooide Nationaal Holocaust Namenmonument in het Weesperplantsoen in Amsterdam, spreken o.a. de Pools-Joodse architect Daniel Libeskind en Rijksbouwmeester Floris Alkemade over het ontwerp en de totstandkoming van het monument.

Daniel Libeskind geeft een lezing over het Namenmonument waar hij in 2017 mee startte. Een labyrint van gangen van twee meter hoge bakstenen muren bevatten 102.000 stenen met de namen van alle Nederlandse slachtoffers van de Holocaust. Deze bakstenen muren dragen vier spiegelende roestvrijstalen Hebreeuwse letters, die samen ‘in memoriam’ betekenen. Het ontwerp van Libeskind staat sinds de eerste presentaties ter discussie.

Vervolgens gaat Libeskind in gesprek met Rijksbouwmeester Floris Alkemade, journalist Judith Zilversmit (Het Parool) en auteur Wim de Wagt (auteur 500 meter namen – de Holocaust en de pijn en de herinnering). Wat betekent dit ontwerp voor de stad Amsterdam en haar geschiedenis?

The day before the official presentation of the Dutch Holocaust Memorial of Names, the Polish-Jewish architect Daniel Libeskind gives a presentation about the development of his architectural design.

After his lecture, Libeskind will enter into conversation with Rijksbouwmeester Floris Alkemade, journalist Judith Zilversmit (Het Parool), and author Wim de Wagt.

Situated along the Weesperstraat, an important axis within the Jewish Cultural Quarter, the 1,550 square meter memorial incorporates four volumes that represent the letters in the Hebrew word לזכר meaning “In Memory of”. Each of the four volumes is crafted from mirror-finished stainless steel that hovers above the walls of individually stacked bricks. 102,000 bricks will each be inscribed with a name, giving a tangible quantification to the many casualties, as well as leaving 1000 blank bricks that will memorialize the unknown victims.

On September 26, Germans will cast their votes to elect a new Bundestag or federal parliament. The result will determine who will succeed Angela Merkel. On this night at De Balie we will discuss Germany’s political future and the impact of the election result on European integration and solidarity.

Germany’s 2021 election is much more significant than it may look. After 16 years as German chancellor, the longest-serving leader in the European Union will pass the torch. Ever since ‘mutti’ Merkel took office, Germany has been a major driving force within the EU. Whether Armin Laschet (CDU/CSU), Annalena Baerbock (Green Party) or Olaf Scholz (SPD) will be the next Bundeskanzler(in), Merkel’s departure raises questions about (the future of) Germany’s political stability, the geopolitical power of the EU and solidarity among member states. There’s no doubt her shoes will be hard to fill.

Considering the France presidential election in April 2022, the next twelve months could prove to be critical for the European Union.

In addition to this discussion, the makers of the Dutch electro-opera Merkel (Nineties Productions/Orkater, 2019) will contribute to the evening with theatre performance.

About the participants

Luuk van Middelaar is a political philosopher, historian and professor of EU Law at Leiden University. In his new book, Een Europees Pandemonium (A European Pandemonium), van Middelaar reflects on the impact of COVID-19 on cohesion within the EU and the EU’s geopolitical relations.  

Jana Puglierin is head of the Berlin Office of the European Council on Foreign Affairs (ECFR). Her area of expertise includes Germany’s role in Europe and transatlantic relations. Puglierin also directs ECFR’s Re:shape Global Europe project.

Laurens Boven is a political journalist (BNNVARA, BNR Nieuwsradio) and former correspondent in Germany. In the run-up to the German elections, he is making a podcast about Merkel with Rob Savelberg, who currently works as a correspondent for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf in Berlin.

Floor Houwink ten Cate is a director and writer creating performances on the cutting edge of music theatre, opera and film. She initiated and directed the electro opera Merkel (2019, Nineties Productions/Orkater): a musical portrait of a seemingly egoless chancellor and the divided Europe she is leaving behind.

Annelinde Bruijs is an actress, singer and composer. She graduated in music theatre from Codarts Rotterdam. She composed music for and performed in the electro opera Merkel.

Benjamin Moen is part of the Flemish-Dutch theatre collective BOG and performed with Orkater/Zoutmus, Oostpool, Toneelhuis, Young Gangsters and Toneelschuur Producties. He played the part of the German chancellor in the electro opera Merkel.
