Muziek en politiek zijn al eeuwenlang met elkaar verbonden: Beethoven en Napoleon, Sjostakovitsj en Stalin, Hitler en Entartete Kunst… en nu is er Poetins oorlog in Oekraïne. Wat is nu de rol van de kunst? Hoe reageert de muziekwereld hierop? Aan de ene kant zijn er beroemde musici die Poetin steunen, zoals Valeri Gergiev en Boris Berezovski. En aan de andere kant zijn er musici die Poetin scherp veroordelen, zoals Jevgeni Kissin, Mischa Maisky en, het hoofdonderwerp van deze film, de in Nederland wonende jonge Russische celliste Maya Fridman. De film stelt vragen over de macht van ‘zachte krachten’, van gezamenlijke idealen en van muzieknoten als kogels. Moet je heel dapper zijn om iets te doen? 

Vlak voor Kerstmis zegt Matthias zijn baan in Duitsland op om terug te keren naar zijn ouderlijke dorp in Transsylvanië. Hij wil zich meer bezighouden met de opvoeding van zijn zoon Rudi en verlangt er naar om zijn ex-geliefde Csilla weer te zien. Eenmaal thuis aangekomen blijkt de rust in de gemeenschap hevig te zijn verstoord door de komst van buitenlandse arbeiders. Onderliggende angsten, frustraties en conflicten weten al snel door het dunne vernislaagje van ogenschijnlijke kalmte in het dorp heen te barsten.

Begin november sprak Marina Abramović in De Balie over haar opera-performance ‘7 Deaths of Maria Callas’ – een ode aan de wereldberoemde Grieks-Amerikaanse sopraan. Wanneer doet onze fascinatie voor vrouwelijke grootheden als Callas hen eer aan? Was hun kunstenaarsbestaan echt zo tragisch, of zijn we geneigd hen (na de dood) tot mythe te verheffen? En welke rol spelen biopics en documentaires hierin?

Tijdens de European Cinema Night grijpen we terug naar de documentaire Maria by Callas: In Her Own Words uit 2018. Callas’ carrière begint als 13-jarige leeftijd op het conservatorium van Athene. In de jaren 50 betovert ze met haar onvergelijkbare zang, meeslepende spel en charisma het wereldwijde publiek. Tegelijk komt ze door haar stemproblemen en liefdesleven in het vizier van de schandaalpers, die haar tot haar dood op de huid zit. In 1977 – ze is dan 53 – sterft Callas een eenzame dood in haar appartement in Parijs.  

Regisseur Tom Volf bouwt Maria by Callas op rond een tv-interview met David Frost uit 1970. ‘Ik had liever een gelukkig gezin gehad en kinderen’, vertelt ze hem. ‘Dat is de voornaamste roeping van de vrouw. Maar het lot heeft me deze carrière gegeven.’

Na de vertoning gaan we in gesprek met Basje Boer die over film, popcultuur, beeldende kust en literatuur schrijft voor o.a. De Groene Amsterdammer en De Filmkrant. Op 13 december verschijnt haar essaybundel ‘Pose – Over hoe we kijken en wie we spelen’.

De broers Saud en Nadeem begonnen twintig jaar geleden met het verzorgen van gewonde roofvogels toen bleek dat het dierenziekenhuis alleen vegetarische vogels toeliet. Ze delen hun huis met tientallen roofvogels en uilen. De meeste daarvan zijn Zwarte Wouwen, die massaal de stad bevolken en van wie Indiase moslims geloven dat ze je moeilijkheden weg eten. New Delhi is een van de drukst bevolkte steden van de wereld. En misschien ook wel een van de meest vervuilde. Maar ook wonderbaarlijk vol van leven. In onwaarschijnlijk mooi gefotografeerde scenes duiken op de meest onverwachte plekken dieren op. Alsof ze er altijd al hebben gewoond. De broers vertellen over hoe het leven experimenteert en zich probeert aan te passen aan veranderende omstandigheden. De vogels gaan hoger zingen om boven het stadslawaai uit te komen, maar ontdekken ook bijvoorbeeld hoe ze sigarettenpeuken kunnen gebruiken als afweermiddel tegen parasieten. Hun rake, poëtische gedachten mengen zich met opzienbarende beelden van grote schoonheid: Een duizendpoot ontmoet een overvliegend vliegtuig, een jong uiltje wordt gewassen als een baby in een teiltje en een familie wilde varkens steekt bij het licht van de straatlantarens een riviertje over All That Breathes van de Indiase filmmaker Shaunak Sen is een fascinerende en gelaagde documentaire over twee broers die roofvogels redden in New Delhi, waar dieren en de mensen zichtbaar worstelen met de gevolgen van de vervuiling. De twee moslim-broers tonen met veel wijsheid en humor hoe al het leven, van schimmels tot de mens, met elkaar verweven is. De stad als levend organisme is een cliché, maar deze film laat zien hoe waar dat is. De zeer bijzondere visuele taal is van de hand van “Gunda” cameraman Ben Bernhard.

All That Breathes won dit jaar de hoofdprijs voor Beste documentaire op twee belangrijke festivals: Sundance en Cannes. Een unicum in de filmgeschiedenis.

In 1968, medicine man Raymundo Tigre Perez (Mexico/USA) had a vision. He saw indigenous Wisdom Keepers from all over the world united in a circular pit – with a fire in the heart – performing a ceremony. A spiritual ceremony for the earth, for peace and well-being of all living beings.

Only later did he discover that this was a KIVA, an ancient ceremony already used by the Anasazi 3000 years ago. Hundreds of native Wisdom Keepers answered his call and these KIVA ceremonies have been taking place around the world for more than 30 years. The KIVA ceremony is a collective call from the entire indigenous population: they have never lost touch with nature and with their ancient wisdom they can lead us to a more connected and sustainable way of life!

In this documentary we get a unique view of the KIVA ceremony, where indigenous Wisdom Keepers gather around a sacred fire and express their love via prayers, ancient rituals, songs and dance. But they also share their concern about the care for Mother Nature and humanity! Because of the moving prayers and the impressive conversations with the Wisdom Keepers – the viewer is invited to reflect upon how to heal our relationship with the Earth. ‘Because she is crying and is calling her children home!’

And so the Wisdom Keepers carry out their final call through KIVA ceremonies all over the world. At the same time they bring healing and solutions through their ancient rituals, prayers and indigenous wisdom.

Derwish Osman is Sufi Dance and Prayer (Turkey. As a follower (murid) of Sufimaster Shaukh Nazim Al-Haqqani and Shaykh Hisham Kabbani, world renowned scholars and spiritual masters of the Naqsibandiyya Sufi Order, he has the permission to give lectures and teachings in the mystic meditation of the sufi’s (sufi meditation and whirling performances).

Francesca Fralaia is a harpist, singer and artist who uses music as a means to awaken the sacred essence that is within and around us. She will musically accompany Derwish Osman’s Sufi dance with her magical tonality.

Marieke van der Windens aangrijpende speurtocht naar het oorlogsverleden van haar familie toont het taboe waar veel families die collaboreerden met de Duitsers mee te maken hebben. Op haar moeders begrafenis hoort ze van een oom dat haar grootouders fout waren. Dertig jaar lang durft ze dat familiegeheim niet onder ogen te komen. Nu gaat ze op zoek naar de ontluisterende waarheid. De verhalen bieden weinig troost, maar wel inzichten in de verstoorde relatie met haar moeder.

In Mi país imaginario keert documentairemaker Patricio Guzmán (La cordillera de los sueños, Nostalgia de la Luz) terug naar Chili om verslag te doen van de onverwachte revolutie die in oktober 2019 begon. Guzmán moest Chili na de mislukte revolutie van 1973 verlaten, toen het land ten prooi viel aan de dictatuur. Maar nu is er hoop op een eerlijke samenleving. Na de verhoging van de prijs voor een metrokaartje komt het in oktober 2019 tot protesten in Santiago, Chili. Anderhalf miljoen mensen gingen de straat op. Ze protesteerden niet alleen tegen de hoge prijzen van de metro, maar ook tegen de falende democratie en voor verbetering van het onderwijs en de gezondheidzorg. Nu is het tijd voor een nieuwe grondwet die de dictatuur definitief achter zich laat. Het zijn vooral vrouwen die het voortouw nemen en een belangrijke rol spelen bij het schrijven van deze nieuwe grondwet.

Inspired by Not Yet Yes program and its thought-provoking viewpoint on queer, Artistic Director Orwa Nyrabia sits across Simon(e) van Saarloos in an open contemplative debate about unarticulated power dynamics in the documentary cinema and film festival movement.

While striving to express authentic queer perspectives in cinema, we can overlook the line between accomplishing representation and labeling. The very concept of queerness questions the way we are used to look at things. But how much has the documentary art form, which operates by pointing a camera, progressed in this exercise of truly embracing different as equal? And what really stands in its way? 

Following the thread started by Simon(e) van Saarloos in her essay Not Yet Yes, and the insights from this year’s Focus Program: Around Masculinity, the two speakers decided to apply queer glossary to the film process and to shift the critical spotlight to highlight film festival culture itself. The public audience is encouraged to join in this critical examination alongside film professionals and festival guests.

The corner of 12th Street and Delaware Avenue in Fort Pierce, Florida, is not as run-of-the-mill as it might look. Day and night, members of the Pregnancy Care Center hang around outside the abortion clinic located across the street. Armed with photos of dead fetuses, they hope to fight evil by getting women to change their minds about terminating their pregnancies. Then “evil” pulls up in a bright yellow Mustang.

The abortion doctors in the car have sheets over their heads so as not be recognized. With good reason, as we soon discover: in the past, doctors who perform abortions have been murdered. At stake in this battle are the often very young pregnant women, who still make their way to the clinic despite feelings of guilt and fear. If they accidentally enter the Pregnancy Care Center across the way, many of them abandon their choice after hearing the gruesome stories: “They pull the baby out piece by piece.”

In the abortion clinic, people don’t understand the fanaticism of their neighbors: “Why are they playing around [with these women] like that?” 12th & Delaware reveals the anger, the sadness and the powerlessness of two entirely different worlds, each completely convinced of its own mission.

A Country in a Corner (starts at 15:00, Malavoune Tango follows)

Homesickness drives Neema Ngelime to the district of Matonge in Brussels, which is home to a large African community. The busy shopping streets evoke memories of her life in Tanzania. She wants to record the similarities with her native land for her grandmother, but that is easier said than done. As in Tanzania, most people on the street prefer not to be filmed. Yet, Ngelime gradually gets closer to the shopkeepers and customers of Chaussée de Wavre, and shares her observations with the viewer.

Ngelime sees that the stifling morality she recognizes from Africa has also been transported to Belgium. She explains that respect for women in Tanzania is measured by the length of their skirts. The hairstyle you choose also shows how you want to be respected. At her every stop, from the hairdresser and nail salon to the grocer’s, Ngelime is obliged to make choices: will she follow tradition or take her own path? She wants to be part of the community, but at what cost? “I wish, as with a skirt, we could alter parts of our country we don’t like.” Without passing judgement, A Country in the Corner shows the dilemmas migrants face worldwide.

Malavoune Tango

On Mayotte, the only island in the Comoros that is still French, a group of outlawed young men lead their lives in the shadows, hunted by the police. Although they were born on this island north of Madagascar, not all of them hold French citizenship. They have nothing to rely on but their dogs.

The animals protect them from police brutality: “If the dog gets respect, so do I.” The dogs have no pedigree and no history; they just live from day to day, and they don’t know whether they will be beaten or shot tomorrow—their existence is as bare and uncertain as that of their owners. One of the men has had to fend for himself since he was 14, when his mother was deported from the island. He feels abandoned by all except by his dogs: “At least they always stay with me.”

Meanwhile, the only place the men feel at home, the forest beside the mangrove swamp, is being cut down. “We’re neither here nor there, nor in France, we’re just lost.” With rough tenderness, and excellent camera work, this empathetic film shows how the dogs form a lifeline in a colony where these men are not allowed to exist.
