Zelfs mensen die niets met poëzie hebben grijpen in de donkerste uren naar een dichtbundel. Want poëzie kan soms beter verwoorden wat je voelt dan jij zelf, zeker in tijden waarin de wereld tegenvalt. Adriaan van Dis en Ellen Deckwitz vertellen over gedichten die hen raken en die troost bieden.

Adriaan van Dis is een veelzijdig, geëngageerd schrijver, getuige romans als Indische duinen, De wandelaar en Tikkop. In 2015 won Ik kom terug de Libris Literatuurprijs en kreeg hij de Constantijn Huygens-prijs voor zijn gehele oeuvre. Zijn laatste roman is Naar zachtheid en een warm omhelzen. In 2024 verscheen zijn pamflet De kolonie slaat terug.

Ellen Deckwitz is dichteres, schrijfster, theatermaakster en columniste en podcastmaker. Ze schrijft onder meer voor NRC en De Morgen. De afgelopen jaren verschenen prijswinnende bundels (onder meer De steen vreest mij, C. Buddingh-prijs 2012), boeken over schrijven (het alom geprezen Zo word je een geweldige dichter) en de bestseller Olijven moet je leren lezen. In 2020 verscheen bij Uitgeverij Pluim Dit gaat niet over Grasmaaien. Ellen Deckwitz won in 2021 De Johnny, de oeuvreprijs voor podiumpoëzie. Ze is stadsdichter van Amsterdam.

Holland Festival and De Balie have made a programme with a central role for the work of author, theatre director and filmmaker Christiane Jatahy, who is this year’s Holland Festival associate artist. Jatahy will have a conversation with correspondent Nina Jurna, moderated by Aldith Hunkar, at De Balie about the art and stories that shaped her artistic practice. Where is the line between reality and fiction? What is power? What structures govern society? These are central questions in her work, which explores the intersections between artistic disciplines. She will also elaborate on the projects she is involved with at the festival.

Christiane Jatahy is described as a ‘harsh and acute observer of the violent cruelty of our world’ (Golden Lion jury report, Venice Biennale). She aims to effect connection, dialogue and social change through her work. Her artistic signature involves a cinematic way of working on-stage, in which she uses cameras to create both distance and nearness, thus altering our perspective.

The part of the festival programme to come about in consultation with Jatahy embraces the eclectic nature of her work. We have invited a range of (mainly Brazilian) makers — from theatre makers and choreographers to musicians and DJs. Some of these are regular collaborators of Jatahy’s, while others inspired her ideas about art and the role of art in society. Together, they present an intriguing view of what is currently happening – on the stage and beyond – in Brazil and the rest of the world.

Nina Jurna will join in conversation with Jatahy. Jurna lives in Rio de Janeiro and is Latin America correspondent for NRC and NOS. She also works for VPRO and VRT. After studying journalism at Windesheim in Zwolle, Nina Jurna worked as a freelancer for Radio Noord-Holland and AT5. In 2000 she left for Suriname where she lived for more than ten years and worked as a correspondent for RTL Nieuws and Het Parool. Since 2011, Nina Jurna lives in Brazil and is a Latin America correspondent. Nina has written several books about Suriname: With your own eyes, about 140 abolition of slavery in Suriname (2003). Standplaats Paramaribo (2007), Desi Bouterse, a Surinamese reality (2015) and she wrote a contribution to the book Antonlogie, about the ideas of Anton de Kom. In 2019 Nina was guest in the famous Dutch TV show ‘Zomergasten’. In 2023, together with director Martijn Blekendaal, she made a 7-part documentary series ‘From Bahia to Brooklyn’ about the Caribbean for VPRO. In 2023 Nina presented the podcast Latin Impact, about songs with social impact in Latin-America.

Composer Georg Friedrich Haas, who’s 11.000 Saiten is featured this Holland Festival, will talk about his autobiography Durch vergiftete Zeiten: Memoiren eines Nazibuben, which recounts his complex family history and its ties with national socialism. The central question in this programme is how he freed himself from his family’s Nazi ideology, what the role of art is to find liberty and how to deal with generational trauma. He is joined in conversation by artists and documentary makers Eline Jongsma and Kel O’Neill who created the artwork His name is my name that deals with this subject.

Haas‘ memoirs constitute a rare and important historical document that recounts a complex Austrian family history in the context of post-WW II national socialism, and Haas’ determined struggle against Nazi ideology in particular. With great precision, emotional strength and lucid social analysis, Haas offers a detailed look at a community influenced by German nationalism and national socialism. Haas describes how his break was also a way out from the toxic environment which also deeply influenced his work as a composer.

Jongsma + O’Neill created the documentary His name is my name. An instagram-based documentary about family secrets and the legacy of WWII. The documentary can be watched in De Balie prior to the programme.

Immanuel Kant, de belangrijkste filosoof van de moderne tijd, werd driehonderd jaar geleden geboren, maar zijn revolutionaire denken is nog steeds relevant. Zo blijkt ook in ‘Kant. De revolutie van het denken’ van de Duitse filosoof Marcus Willaschek. Kant formuleerde de categorische imperatief en maakte een onderscheid tussen de voor-ons-waarneembare-wereld en de dingen zoals ze werkelijk zijn. Tijdens dit programma behandelen we de vier vragen van Kant met een panel van experts. Hoe zijn deze vragen nog steeds van invloed in de huidige maatschappij?

De Duitse filosoof Immanuel Kant schreef als eerste over kosmopolitisme en gaf ons idee van menselijke waardigheid vorm. Kant beschouwde zijn vier vragen als essentieel voor het begrijpen van de menselijke conditie en de beperkingen en mogelijkheden van onze kennis en ethiek: ‘Wat kan ik weten? Wat moet ik doen? Waar mag ik op hopen? Wat is de mens?’

Marcus Willaschek is een vooraan­staand internationaal Kantexpert en hoogleraar moderne filosofie aan de Goethe Universiteit in Frankfurt. Als voorzitter van de Kantcommis­sie van de Berlijns-Brandenburgse Academie voor Wetenschappen en Geesteswetenschappen is hij medeverantwoordelijk voor de academische uitgave van Kants geschriften. In het boek ‘Kant. De revolutie van het denken’ beschrijft hij in dertig korte hoofdstukken de vele facetten van Kants revolutie in het denken, die de mens in het middelpunt van de wereld plaatst. Hij maakt duidelijk waarom Kant nog altijd relevant is en wanneer hij problematisch is. Ook heeft hij aandacht voor Kants levensverhaal en de tijd waarin hij leefde.

5G, de vijfde generatie draadloze technologie, staat aan de vooravond van een revolutionaire verschuiving in de manier waarop we communiceren, werken en leven. Deze geavanceerde technologie belooft niet alleen ultrasnelle mobiele connectiviteit, maar biedt ook een breed scala aan toepassingen die onze samenleving zullen transformeren. Maar is dit wel iets wat we moeten willen? En wat heeft 5G de consument te bieden?

Tijdens deze avond gaan we in gesprek met onderzoekers, tech-optimisten, politici en kunstenaars. Met de komst van 5G zullen er veel antennes worden bijgebouwd en providers zullen onze publiek ruimte inrichten. 5G is een afkorting van ‘5e generatie mobiele netwerk’: de infrastructuur om draadloos data van het ene naar het andere apparaat te kunnen versturen (van mobieltjes tot smartwatches en van sensoren tot drones). Het draadloos versturen gaat via radiofrequenties. Zoals elke radiozender een eigen frequentie heeft waarop je deze kan vinden, zijn er voor het draadloze netwerk ook een aantal frequenties beschikbaar. Net als met radiozenders, kan maar één partij de frequentie gebruiken, anders ontstaat er ruis. 

Discussies over 5G hebben soms controverses opgeroepen, waarbij sommige mensen zorgen uiten over vermeende gezondheidsrisico’s en samenzweringstheorieën met betrekking tot de technologie. Dit onderwerp zal echter niet centraal staan tijdens de avond; in plaats daarvan willen we een kritische blik werpen op de holistische benadering van het gebruik van 5G.

Altijd als eerste op de hoogte van onze programmering

De Europese democratie en rechtsstaat staan onder druk. In steeds meer Europese landen komen figuren aan de macht met dictatoriale trekjes. Ze hebben weinig op met de vrije pers, de eerlijke rechtspraak en een kritische volksvertegenwoordiging. Dat werpt prangende vragen op, zoals wat is de weerslag op de Europese Unie?

‘Het belangrijkste is de democratie, de rechtsstaat die we verdedigen en de vrede die we samen hebben,’ Met die woorden stelde Ursula von der Leyen zich beschikbaar voor een tweede termijn als Commissievoorzitter.

Maar wat zijn de gevolgen als antidemocratische partijen ook in Brussel steeds meer stemmen krijgen? En kunnen democratische waakhonden zoals volksvertegenwoordigers, maatschappelijke organisaties, de media en toezichthouders voldoende controle uitoefenen om de Brusselse macht gezond te houden?

Wie let er op Brussel?
Het startpunt van dit programma is het boek Wie let er op Brussel? van het journalistieke onderzoeksteam Bureau Brussel van Follow the Money. Democratische waakhonden zoals volksvertegenwoordigers, maatschappelijke organisaties, de media en toezichthouders worstelen om de Europese waarden hoog te houden. Hun verhalen tonen de bressen in de muren van de Europese Unie als liberale democratie, onder het voorzitterschap van ‘opperbureaucraat’ Ursula von der Leyen.

The Congolese artist collective Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise (CATPC) will represent the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale 2024, supported by artist Renzo Martens and curator Hicham Khalidi. In the run-up to the 60^th biennale they will give a preview in De Balie to their joint plan and elaborate on the story behind their choices.

The collective and community of Congolese plantation workers CATPC is based in Lusanga, the site of Anglo-Dutch company Unilever’s very first plantation. In 2017, in tandem with Renzo Martens’ wish to ‘reverse gentrification’, they opened the White Cube, a museum, in Lusanga. A place where the members of CATPC create the artworks that they exhibit in leading museum worldwide. The proceeds from their art are being used to buy back former plantation lands to transform them into biodiverse agro-forests. For CATPC, the time has come for plantation workers to reclaim the land and the profits extracted from plantations and later invested in museums, as theirs.

The opportunity to connect a white cube on a plantation to one of the art world’s top events allows a direct look at these two worlds and the disparities between them.

Renzo Martens and Hicham Khalidi have sought to find a way in which CATPC can represent itself at the Dutch pavilion in Venice. The Dutch entry will therefore consist of two presentations that are directly mirrored and connected. The joint plan by Martens, Khalidi and CATPC will be open to the public from 20 April until 24 November 2024 at the Rietveld Pavilion in Venice and simultaneously at the White Cube in Lusanga, the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Dutch entry is commissioned by the Mondriaan Fund.

In de programmareeks Operatie Interview staat de kunst van het interviewen centraal. Drie vlijmscherpe interviewers bevragen één gast. Wie de interviewers zijn, blijft tot op het podium geheim. Ditmaal: demissionair staatssecretaris van Justitie en Veiligheid op het terrein van Asiel en Migratie Eric van der Burg (VVD).

Sinds 2022 heeft staatssecretaris Van der Burg zich vastgebeten in wat in Den Haag bekendstaat als het hoofdpijndossier, waar bovendien het vorige kabinet op is gevallen: asiel en migratie. In het verdeelde huidige politieke landschap probeert van der Burg de opvangcrisis in Nederland te bedwingen. Ondanks alle tegenwerking, trok Van der Burg de Spreidingswet voor asielzoekers begin dit jaar over de eindstreep: de Eerste Kamer stemde in. En dat terwijl de wet binnen zijn eigen partij niet onomstreden was.

Van der Burg staat bekend als een ongrijpbare VVD’er. Tijdens zijn Amsterdamse periode werd hij gezien als linkse VDD’er, maar in Den Haag viel hij ook op bij het rechtsere deel van de partij. Daarnaast is hij niet bang om zijn emoties te uiten als politicus. We zagen tranen bij de staatssecretaris tijdens de val van het kabinet omdat hij zijn beloofde asiel akkoord niet waar kon maken. Wat krijgen we van hem te horen in gesprek met drie geheime interviewers?

Amidst the worldwide loss of food diversity and our increasing reliance on a limited number of crops and corporations, there lies an opportunity for ecological and cultural enrichment. Instead of prioritizing bulk over quality, a diverse food culture can serve to nourish both ourselves and our environment. Can we tune the Dutch food system to respond to the dynamics and diversity of our unique delta landscape?

Throughout the past several decades, our approach to food has leaned heavily towards homogenization, diminishing both the variety in our natural environment and in what we consume. Of the roughly six thousand different plants once consumed by human beings just three of these—rice, wheat, and corn—now provide half of all our calories. This trend is not irreversible: there’s a growing awareness of the need to reconnect with the vast array of plants that once graced our plates.

In ‘Eating to Extinction’ (Eten tot het op is) food writer Dan Saladino embarks on a journey across the globe to uncover foods that are on the brink of disappearing forever. His exploration offers a glimmer of hope, highlighting the resilience of our food system and the potential for adaptation to ever changing climates and landscapes.

Dan Saladino is a journalist and broadcaster. He makes programmes about food for BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service. His work has been recognized by the Guild of Food Writers Awards, the Fortnum and Mason Food and Drink Awards, and in America by the James Beard Foundation. Eating to Extinction was awarded the James Cropper Wainwright Prize for Conservation Writing. He lives in Cheltenham, but his roots are Sicilian.

In Europe, a wave of dissent is spreading. From Belgium to Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, and Spain, farmers are out in the streets. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), the world’s largest farming budget, and the plans to make it more sustainable, the Green Deal, are facing backlash. All the while, the EU’s efforts for food security and sustainability have never been more important. Which way forward for European farmers?

At De Balie, we discuss the future of European farming with Peter Meedendorp (President of CEJA Young Farmers) and Member of the European Parliament Mohammed Chahim. Can climate adaptation in agriculture be organized in a just way – one that protects jobs as well as the planet? And how can we take critical steps in a debate frustrated by mutual image-building and pitchfork politics?
