De kunstwereld spant zich hard in om een inclusievere plek te worden waar ruimte is voor meer perspectieven dan alleen die van de witte heteroseksuele westerse man. Meer vrouwen, meer mensen van kleur, meer queer perspectief. Maar een grote groep makers wordt vooralsnog vergeten: kunstenaars met een beperking, psychiatrische achtergrond of daklozen-achtergrond. 

In Nederland zijn er voor deze kunstenaars ruim 200 ateliers waar zij hun kunst kunnen maken. Toch blijven ze buiten de gevestigde instituten. Ze worden weggezet onder het kopje art brut of outsider art en zijn niet welkom op de prestigieuze kunstacademies. Hun werk hangt niet in de grote musea.

Welke structurele veranderingen zijn er mogelijk om ‘outsiders’ meer gelijke kansen te geven in het reguliere circuit? Zou een talentvol kunstenaar met downsyndroom naar de kunstacademie moeten kunnen gaan? En zijn er eigenlijk ook redenen waarom je de kunstwereld wél zou willen opdelen in ‘insider’ en ‘outsider’?

De Balie and ITA present a one-off collage performance directed by Ivo van Hove about the state of democracy in Europe. With a special performance of one of the most famous historians worldwide: Simon Schama.

The artist and the tyrant have been age-old foes. The arts are outlawed in most dictatorships, because dictators know that the artist has the power to win over the public and inspire freedom.  Throughout history, artists and writers have fought for truth, freedom, and democracy.

For democratic rule to endure, citizens must believe in its worth. Failure to internalize a culture of democracy can lead to its demise. Misinformation and propaganda fuel distrust, which can in turn breed dictatorships. Therefore, nurturing the arts is vital for a true culture of democracy.

Bringing together political speeches and theatre texts, recent events and historical moments, the performance, featuring ITA’s ensemble and guest speaker Simon Schama, reflects on the European society of today.

Every two years, De Balie and Ivo van Hove create a one-off performance for the Forum on European Culture. The performance Re: Creating Europe (2016) travelled to Manchester International Festival and Théâtre d l’Odéon in Paris.

Fatma Aydemir, one of Germany’s most influential writers, will present the fourth State of European Literature. With her prize-winning debut novel Elbow (Ellbogen, 2017) and her family saga Djinns (Dschinns, 2022) Aydemir has become one of Europe’s leading literary voices and a chronicler of diasporic life; of Germany as a conflicted, sometimes hostile and at the same time inspiring country, and Turkey as a reluctant and troubled home country. Fatma Aydemir will give this year’s lecture and share her ideas on the State of Europe through a literary perspective.

After the lecture, Fatma Aydemir will meet with the Dutch writer and poet Simone Atangana Bekono, who won multiple prizes for her works such as the Libris Literatuurprijs 2021.

The State of European Literature is a yearly lecture given by an internationally renowned author or poet. Today, Europe’s languages continue to write and tell stories about the continent, its intimate lives, its neighbours and its development in the present, the past and the future. Because of political polarization, there is a new impulse for the truth of literary fiction and the power and precision of poetic expression.

The state of European literature raises awareness of the central role of literature in the current and future state of Europe. Previous speakers were Philipp Blom (2020), Nelleke Noordervliet (2021), and Alain Mabanckou (2022).

The 2023 edition of the State of European Literature is hosted by the UvA-Faculty of Humanities and SPUI25, and supported by ACES (the Amsterdam Center of European Studies), ARTES (Amsterdam School for Regional, Transnational and European Studies), and OSL (Onderzoeksschool Literatuurwetenschap).

Vorig jaar verscheen tamelijk stilletjes een wonderlijk boek, volgens sommigen een hoogtepunt van het literaire jaar: Waarachtige beschrijvingen uit de permafrost. Het boek vertelt, vanuit het perspectief van een dode dichter, langzaam ontdooiend in zijn vier eeuwen oude ijsgraf, het bekende avontuur van Barentz en bemanning op Nova Zembla.

Atoomproeven, klimaatverandering en ontdekkingsreizen komen samen in een lyrische roman over het eeuwige ijs, besneeuwde landschappen en het grote wit. Niedekker vond nieuwe lezers, won de F. Bordewijkprijs en staat op de shortlist van de Libris Literatuur Prijs. Hoe is dit bijzondere boek tot stand gekomen?
