Er zijn tussen Europese landen veel verschillen in de gezondheidszorg. Van goedkeuring van medicijnen tot zorgverzekeringssysteem en zelfs toegang tot medicijnen en medische technieken. Hierdoor komt het voor dat een medicijn in Duitsland bijvoorbeeld eerder op de markt kan komen dan in Nederland. Voor patiënten kan dat nét het verschil maken.

Daarom kiezen sommige patiënten er zelfs voor om naar een ander land te reizen om eerder toegang te krijgen tot een bepaald medicijn. Hoe zorgen we er voor dat medicijnen beter en sneller toegankelijk zijn? Hoe voorkomen we dat de verschillen binnen Europa niet te groot worden? Moet Europa zichzelf tot doel stellen al deze verschillen weg te halen, centraal te regelen, en zo een European Health Union op te zetten?

Na goedkeuring van de EMA duurt het gemiddeld nog 128 dagen voordat een medicijn in Nederland wordt toegelaten. In Duitsland is dat 17 dagen. Waarom duurt het in Nederland zo lang? Leading up to the Forum on European Culture (June 2023) De Balie curates four episodes about Russian literature and music, in collaboration with Maxim Osipov. Writers, scholars and experts on Russian literature will shed their light on Russian literature, from the classics to the new voices.

In this programme, we will listen to the poetry of the acclaimed writers Gandlevsky and Gugolev, and talk with them about their work and life. What inspires them in their writing, how do they look at the current events in Russia, and what does this mean for literature and poetry? There will be music from Maryana Osipova and Dmitry Hahalin.

Culture cannot be viewed separately from social and political developments, especially in Russia. Artists respond to political developments, at the same time they are being used, abused and oppressed by those in power throughout history. A characteristic of Russian artists during the time of communism. Again, the world is at war and a display of power is being played out in the European continent. Russia’s band with Europe is special in a way that a lot of Russian literature and culture throughout history is represented by Russians who fled the country. How is literature and culture formed by fleeing your home country? And for the artists that have stayed, how have the political developments within Russia shaped their line of work and thinking?

About the speakers

Sergey Gandlevsky has been writing poetry since 1970. Before the mid-1980s his poetry was published only abroad in émigré publications. Since the late 1980s it has been published in a wide range of venues in Russia and abroad. Published nine books of poetry, eight collections of essays and two novels. In 2009 he won the “Moskovskii schet [Moscow Reckoning]” Prize, in 2010 — Russian National “Poet” Prize. Poems of Gandvelsky have been translated into two dozens of languages. Since 2022 he lives in Georgia.

Yuliy Gugolev is a poet, graduated from Literary Institute, worked as a paramedic and at the International Red Cross Committee in Moscow. Author of a book of palindromes and six books of poems. Made new translations of the songs of The Three Penny Opera by Bertolt Brecht for Moscow Art Theater (director Kirill Serebrennikov). Laureate of the “Moscow account” award (2007). Winner of the All-Russian Poetry Prize (2020) — main Russian prize for poetry. He lives in Moscow.

Maryana Osipova and Dmitry Hahalin are members of the Eliot Quartett, which founded in 2014. Hailing from Canada, Germany and Russia, the quartet’s members formed the group in Frankfurt am Main and have since gone on to win prizes at major national and international music competitions.

Nina Targan Mouravi, Dutch-Georgian artist, performer and translator, translated the poems of Yuli Gugolev into Dutch specially for this evening.

Programmamaker Ianthe Mosselman praat met fotograaf Robin de Puy en schrijver en kunstenaar Maria Barnas over de sporen die de watersnoodramp achterliet, de gevolgen van de ramp voor de overlevenden en hun nabestaanden. Ze verwerkten hun verhalen in het boek Waters.

Fotografe Robin de Puy portretteert zeventig jaar na de Watersnoodramp van 1953, een aantal bewoners van het eiland Goeree-Overflakkee, dat zwaar getroffen werd. Velen van hen hebben de Watersnoodramp zelf meegemaakt, anderen groeiden op in de schaduw van wat hun (groot)ouders hebben beleefd. De opmerkelijke beelden worden begeleid door een reeks observaties van Maria Barnas. Zij schetst in rake, poëtische taal wat de geportretteerden zich herinneren van de nacht van de ramp en de dagen erna. Daarbij wordt duidelijk welke rol het water blijft spelen in het leven van ieder van hen.

As the world watches, Iranians are taking to the streets to demand change and justice. The courage and determination of these protestors is truly inspiring, and support in their quest for a better future is necessary. To support the women and minorities of Iran, human rights activist Maryam Namazie, announces a revolution by Iranian women. Calling for the overthrow of the Islamic regime and the establishment of a secular society. Niloofar Azimian will give the Freedom Lecture.

Niloofar Azimian is a documentary filmmaker from Iran. Azimian has made two documentary movies in Iran, the first one is a self representative, ego documentary film, focusing on the concept of solitude, the second one focuses on the circle of domestic violence against women in Iran. At the moment she is organizing events Freedom for Iran in different places in the Netherlands. She will engage in conversation with Maryam Namazie, activist and writer, and Ulysse Ellian, member of parliament. Pooyan Tamimi Arab will present the latest facts and figures about the situation at this moment. There will be music from Faravaz Farvardin.

More about the protests

The current protests in Iran began following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman of Kurdish descent who died in jail after being arrested by police for allegedly wearing her headscarf too loosely. Since then, there have been demonstrations in more than 160 cities, making it the largest wave of protests in years. The Iranian government’s response has been violent, with reports of large numbers of deaths and arrests, including minors and police and security personnel. There are also reports of arbitrary detention, torture, and the use of lethal force against protestors.

The lack of transparency from the Iranian government has made it difficult to know the true extent of the human rights abuses that are taking place. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing economic crisis in the country. The international community is calling for measures to be taken to support the protestors and hold the Iranian government accountable for human rights abuses.

It is important that we use our voices and platforms to amplify the voices of the protestors and to call for international action to support the Iranian people in their struggle for freedom and democracy.

This petition from Iran Freedom Charter (Woman, Life, Freedom) is for the establishment of a secular society where all people have full freedom and equality without discrimination, censorship, or repression. Maryam Namazie also calls for a People’s Congress to be formed to incorporate the demands of the people and make the revolution’s charter a common programme representing the hopes and aspirations of all Iranians in a free Iran.

The Freedom Lecture
Freedom is something that we in the Netherlands often take for granted. Four times a year, De Balie invites someone who knows from personal experience what it means not to be free. We want to share their stories, spread their message, and learn from their struggle. In the series, De Balie has welcomed freedom fighters like Egyptian writer and activist Nawal el Saadawi, Ugandan LGBT activist Frank Mugisha, and Hungarian journalist Veronika Munk.

On February 23^rd, the night before Russia invaded Ukraine a year ago, a group of Ukrainian and Dutch actors give a human face to the war. They test new short plays written by Victor Storozhenko and Nina Zakhazenko, both still based in Ukraine. After the staged reading they engage in conversation with the audience.

The short plays by Zakhazenko are logically structured and depict a society that experiences collective trauma and that seeks ways to overcome the consequences of this injury. Storozhenko’s short play The 300th tells his personal story as a military hero. In February 2022 he joined the legion ‘Svoboda’, which is fighting alongside the armed forces of Ukraine. He fought at the forefront, got wounded and was presented an award by president Zelensky.

‘Endless February’ is the first of three stage readings followed by a discussion. The purpose of this series is to acquaint the Dutch audience and theatre community with contemporary Ukrainian dramaturgy. All the proceeds from tickets sales go to the production of the next two editions in April and June.

About the actors

Alesia Andrushevska is a Ukrainian theatre and film actress who left Ukraine after the Russian invasion. She is a member of the National Union of Theatre Workers of Ukraine. She currently performs in Women in Troy, as told by our mothers by Tiago Rodrigues/Dood Paard.

Iana Gudzenko studied Drama Theatre in Kyiv (Master’s degree). She was rewarded with a scholarship from the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and got education as a Director of Music Theatre in GITIS Russian Institute of Theatre Art. In 2013, she got a special prize for youth director’s debut by the Theatre Member’s Association of Ukraine, for the performance Hamlet: death machine.

Oksana Borbat was a leading actress at the Wild Theater in Ukraine from 2016 to 2019. When the war broke out, she moved to Amsterdam. Here Oksana unites friends in Ukrainian theatre. She directer a children’s play that premiered in Amstelveen in 2022.

Maria Pashkurova-Petrenko studied to become a theatre artist at Dnipro theatre and Art College. She has been an actor of the Dnipro Theatre Believe! since 2005. As a production designer, she staged 14 plays in various theatres in Ukraine.

Sonya Pasechnyk, Tymur Haltsev, Eugenia Maliukova, Mariia Kryvoshapova, Valeria Iskenderova and Nikita Pavlenko are six teenagers from Ukraine. They have been living in Zaandam since the start of the war. With the help of drama teacher Iana Gudzenko, and text writer Nina Zakhozhenko, they have created a play ” I’Ok”.

Aleksej Ovsiannikov is a Dutch-Ukrainian actor. He graduated from the Mime School (Academy of Theatre and Dance) in Amsterdam in 2021, with Annihilation – I reduce to nothing which toured in the Netherlands afterwards. He performed in plays by Boukje Schweigmann, Karina Holla, Wild Vlees, Dries Verhoeven, Marcello de Evelien and Davy Pieters, among others.

Gillis Biesheuvel is a Dutch actor and theatre maker. He graduated at Toneelschool Arnhem in 1995. From 1998 to 2018, he was part of the theatre company Dood Paard, which he created over 40 performances with, including Othello and Macbain. He is currently working independently and collaborates regularly with Sarah Moeremans. Besides his work as an actor, he writes and translates texts for theatre and teaches at drama schools.

Programmamaker en onderzoeksjournalist Katarina Schul interviewt Victoria Koblenko. Sinds de Russische invasie in haar geboorteland zet ze zich onvermoeibaar in voor Oekraïne, maar door sommigen wordt ze nog steeds enkel beschouwd als femme fatale of actrice. Hoe ziet zij de toekomst voor zich als maker? Welke dingen wil zij nog bereiken en welke impact heeft het activisme op haar leven? 

Victoria Koblenko is bekend als acteur en presentator in Nederland en Rusland. In Nederland is ze bekend van o.a. Goede Tijden Slechte Tijden, Spuiten en Slikken, Ik wist het en Flikken Maastricht. Sinds de invasie van Oekraïne zet ze zich onvermoeibaar in voor de situatie in het oosten. Ze is van mening dat het Westen te lang blind is geweest voor de oorlogsvoering van Rusland. Onlangs haalde ze met de actie Verlicht Oekraïne meer dan een half miljoen euro op. Tevens pleit ze voor verdieping van de Russische taal en de cultuur, alleen dan kunnen we de oorlog op een constructieve manier het hoofd bieden.

In Nederland is het totale aantal vrouwen werkzaam in technologische beroepen maar 16 procent. Het aandeel jonge vrouwen in de industrie trekt wel aan, maar helaas vertrekken ze ook weer snel door seksisme op de werkvloer. Hoe kunnen werkgevers zorgen voor een inclusieve werkomgeving? Concluderend dat de industrie wordt gedomineerd door mannen, vragen we ons af: wat voor uitwerking heeft deze cultuur op onze gezamenlijke online leefwereld?

Al in 2016 verscheen het rapport Elephant in The Valley – een enquête bedoeld voor vrouwen die minimaal 10 jaar werken in de tech industrie. Meer dan 200 vrouwen deelden hun ervaringen over seksisme op de werkvloer. Een ontwikkeling waar actief iets tegen gedaan moet worden, om een inclusievere branche en online leefwereld te creëren.

Sprekers

Auteur en oprichter van Abel Entertainment, Sanne Kanis, ziet het gebrek aan ethiek als de blinde vlek van tech en schreef een roman over de bedrijfscultuur bij technologiebedrijven (De Bubbel, Prometheus). Zelf was ze werkzaam bij Google, Spotify en Booking.

Maaike Harbers is lector bij Kenniscentrum Creating 010. Zij doet onderzoek naar de relatie tussen kunstmatige intelligentie en de samenleving en is in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd in de rol van gender in relatie tot de ontwikkeling van AI.

Giuliva Brevoord is Product Manager bij Adyen. Ze deed haar bachelor van 2014-2017 in Industrieel management en haar master van 2017-2019 in Operations Management & Logistics.

Rahel de Vriend is Innovatie Strateeg en expert op het gebied van gendergelijkheid in STEM en Senior Project manager bij VHTO. Ze heeft een achtergrond in de startup- en techwereld, waar ze vaak een van de weinige vrouwen aan tafel was en besloot daarom zich in te zetten voor projecten om het aantal meisjes en vrouwen in technologie en ondernemerschap te verhogen.

Stilstaan bij vooruitgang

Met de programmaserie Techdenkers slaan De Balie en Adyen de handen ineen om tot serieuze en structurele reflectie op de rol van technologie in onze samenleving te komen. We gaan de dialoog aan met specialisten, beleidsmakers, kunstenaars en ervaringsdeskundigen en onderzoeken het spanningsveld tussen wat kan en wat wenselijk is. 

Sinds maart 2022 vindt er iedere maand een programma plaats in de evenementenruimte van het nieuwe kantoor van Adyen aan het Rokin. De programma’s worden inhoudelijk verzorgd en uitgezonden door De Balie.

Als er iets was wat Joy Delima al op jonge leeftijd intrigeerde, was het seks. Maar juist over dat onderwerp leerde ze dat ze er niet over mocht praten. Er volgden jaren van schaamte, onbegrip en vooral een groot gebrek aan genot én aan kennis. Onbewust leidde dit tot de grootste queeste uit haar leven tot nu toe: een zoektocht naar seksueel genot.

In dit programma spreekt Joy Delima over haar zoektocht en haar nieuwe boek Goed Komen: Een Seksuele Queeste. Ervaringsdeskundigen en experts komen ook aan het woord en het onderwerp seks wordt uitgebreid, open en eerlijk behandeld.

In dit programma praten we met Joy Delima over haar boek, en gaan we daarna samen in gesprek met Haroon Ali en Yora Rienstra over hun zoektocht naar hoe je het beste kunt communiceren over seks. In hun openhartige podcast bestaan er geen taboes, maar is dat altijd zo geweest? Ook spreken we met fotograaf Bete van Meeuwen, over de betekenis van seksualiteit, gender, identiteit en kunst. Hoe fotograaf je iemands identiteit, en wat betekent seksualiteit voor haar?

‘All animals are equal but some are more equal than others’: Animal Farm is an operatic adaptation of George Orwell’s classic novel, depicting the struggles of farm animals as they overthrow their human ruler and ultimately fall under the control of a new leader from their own ranks.

In this episode of Behind the libretto, programme editor Isabel Sheridan and her guests will delve into the central themes of the opera and their relevance to contemporary society. What similarities can we draw between the story of Animal Farm and today’s world? Can opera, as an art form, be used to address current societal issues? And how do the artists behind the opera reflect on their work in the context of today’s social and political climate?

Following the discussion, live music from the opera will be performed by cast members from the production Marcel Beekman and Francis van Broekhuizen.

Alexander Raskatov (1953) is a highly acclaimed Russian composer. In his adaptation of Animal Farm, Raskatov has infused his own personal allusions to Russia’s complex political history (and reality).  

Lisenka Heijboer Castañón is a young Dutch-Peruvian director and theatre maker. She made her main stage debut at Dutch National opera in 2020 with a new creation: Faust [working title] (“an important contribution to the renewal of the genre of musical theatre: away from the museum right into the middle of social actuality” (Bachtrack). Following this success she created I have missed you forever, a new production for DNO, further exploring collaborative process in opera, that premiered at ITA during the Opera Forward Festival 2022. In the summer of 2022 she directed a new production of Tristan und Isolde together with Zack Winokur at the Santa Fe Opera (‘There is a refreshing feeling of trust to it all, a sensible desire not to get in the way of what clearly remains to these young collaborators a basically human story — and a willingness, perhaps above all, to make space for the music.’ The New York Times).

Eva Peek is a book critic at NRC and an editor at de Nederlandse Boekengids. She obtained her bachelor’s degrees in Literature and Russian at the University of Amsterdam and studied History at Leiden University. She studied and worked in St. Petersburg, Paris, Berlin, and Kiev.

About Animal Farm
Animal Farm is part of the Opera Forward Festival. The opera is directed by Damiano Michieletto and will premiere on the 3rd of March 2023.

Ooit golden de Koninklijke Hoogovens als nationale trots, maar tegenwoordig denkt men bij Tata Steel toch vooral aan fijnstof op schommels en een torenhoge CO2-uitstoot. Wat is er nodig om de grootste vervuiler van Nederland in een schone fabriek te veranderen? Maar vooral: wie gaat dat regelen? In dit programma onderzoeken we wie aanspreekbaar is (en waarover): Brussel, Den Haag, of het provinciehuis in Haarlem.

De afgelopen jaren haalde de staalproducent vaker dan ooit het nieuws. Van overlast en milieuproblematiek tot aangekondigde massaontslagen; de splitsing tussen de Britse en de Nederlandse takken van Tata Steel. Maar de allergrootste uitdaging is de doelstelling die Tata Steel Nederland zichzelf stelde: vanaf 2030 wil het bedrijf op groene waterstof produceren, in plaats van op kolen. Hoe gaat het bedrijf deze doelstelling halen?

Tijdens de Provinciale Statenverkiezingen op 15 maart staat er behoorlijk wat op het spel. Wat kan Tata van het Rijk en de Provincie Noord-Holland verwachten?
