During this book club, we will discuss the book Pleasure Activism by renowned activist, writer and healer adrienne marie brown, in which she explores how we can make the struggle for social justice the most enjoyable human experience possible.

With the help of a moderator and a ‘special guest expert’, we will engage in a conversation about the book. What caught your attention while reading? What resonated with you? And what did you simply not get at all? 

About the author

adrienne maree brown (1978) develops healing ideas through her versatile texts, music, and podcasts. Brown has developed Emergent Strategy, Pleasure Activism, Radical Imagination, and Transformative Justice as ideas and practices for change. She is the author/editor of various publications and founder of the Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, where she currently serves as writer-in-residence.

About the speaker

Rachel Rumai Diaz is a writer, poet, and performance artist. She is involved with “Stem op een Vrouw” (Vote for a Woman) and is the founder of the literary platform for intersectional feminism called “Zus ’n Zo.” In 2020, she was recognized by NRC Handelsblad as one of the 101 new talents in the cultural field from the Netherlands and Dutch-speaking Belgium. Through her work, Rachel seeks to bridge the gap between art and activism. Both on stage and behind the scenes, she strives to raise awareness and create more space for unheard voices.

What happens when art and activism intersect? Renowned activist and writer adrienne maree brown takes inspiration from the visionary Afro-American science-fiction writer Octavia Butler and her exploration of humanity’s relationship with change, exploring themes such as community upliftment, emergence, social justice, and joy.

During this artist-to-artist event, adrienne maree brown, author of captivating books such as Emergent Strategy and Pleasure Activism will give us insights into what moves her both personally and artistically. Additionally she will engage in conversation with writer and social commentator Munganyende Hélène Christelle, theatre maker Gavin-Viano, and visual artist and fashion designer Bodil Ouédraogo.

In De Balie wordt dit jaar weer een podium geboden aan jonge woordkunstenaars en opiniemakers tijdens het Parool Columnfestival, dat in samenwerking met Nowhere, een productiehuis in Amsterdam-Oost voor jong talent, wordt georganiseerd. Met meer dan duizend deelnemende Amsterdamse middelbare scholieren belooft het festival wederom een bruisende bijeenkomst te worden.

Tijdens masterclasses voorafgaand aan deze avond hebben de jongeren onder begeleiding van ervaren gastdocenten hun pen laten spreken en hun eigen columns geschreven en geperfectioneerd. De meest getalenteerde leerlingen krijgen de kans om hun stukken voor te dragen voor een volle zaal van leeftijdsgenoten. En dat is nog niet alles: de gastcolumnisten van Het Parool, hosts en dj’s zorgen voor een onvergetelijke festivalervaring met hun levendige randprogrammering.

Behrouz Boochani and Mohamedou Ould Slahi have written two of the most harrowing accounts of imprisonment in the 21^st century. In this programme, they first enter into conversation. What does it mean to write when you are in prison? How do you convey the horrors of the system you have unexpectedly found yourself in? Ould Slahi and Boochani will discuss writing as testimony, as resistance and as resilience.

Born in Mauritania, Mohamedou Ould Slahi (1970) was held in the infamous Guantánamo Bay prison for 14 years. He was tortured there, but no charges were ever brought against him. In 2015, while Ould Slahi was still incarcerated, his book Guantánamo Diary was published. In 2016, Ould Slahi was released. His story was adapted into the Hollywood film The Mauritanian.

When Kurdish-Iranian poet and journalist Behrouz Boochani (1983) attempted to flee to Australia in 2013, he was captured at sea and transported by plane to the island of Manus. There, he was unlawfully imprisoned in the so-called “Australian Guantanamo”. While in jail, Boochani secretly wrote Only the Mountains Are My Friends on a phone that was smuggled into the prison. His first-hand account is gruesome but poetic. Boochani has recently released a new book: Freedom, Only Freedom: The Prison Writings of Behrouz Boochani.

In times of crises, the scales of film industry always tip towards the commercial side. Cinemas were already struggling with the rise of streaming services, when the pandemic lockdowns eradicated the habits of cinema-going. As a result, the sales agents, distributors and exhibitors became cautious about acquiring any film that doesn’t guarantee profit.

This put European art house filmmakers in an even more precarious position. First, they have to navigate through years of bureaucracy, pigeonholing, corruption, and nepotism to make their film and then the chances are high these films won’t travel much outside the festival circuit.

In an attempt to ease this situation, De Balie founded Shifting Pictures, a travelling festival highlighting filmmakers from Serbia, Czechia, Romania and the Netherlands. Shifting Pictures was sponsored by Vfonds and Collaborate to Innovate (Europa Cinemas).

In the first panel, four European directors, join us on stage to discuss the challenges they face when trying to finance films. The second panel consists of European exhibitors who talk about the other side of filmmaking: where films meet their audiences.

Programmamaker en directeur van De Balie, Yoeri Albrecht, gaat in gesprek met advocaat en schrijver van het boek Kafka in de Rechtsstaat Ellen Pasman. Een vooraanstaande advocaat in Amsterdam, met veel ervaring in juridische zaken die onder media en openbaar bestuur vallen. Ze stond onder meer journalist Willem Oltmans bij in zijn jarenlange proces tegen de Nederlandse staat.

In haar nieuwste boek over het Toeslagenschandaal toont ze aan dat de wereld van Frans Kafka geen nachtmerrie of fictie is, maar vaak gewoon een beschrijving van de realiteit in een bureaucratische samenleving.

Talloze gezinnen werden jarenlang ontwricht door kafkaëske terugvorderingspraktijken van de belastingdienst. De gang naar de rechter was vaak zinloos en rechtsbescherming werd een illusie.

Wat vertelt de baard ons over hoe we ons verhouden tot mannelijkheid? Op deze avond presenteert journalist Gideon Querido van Frank een mini-baardenfestival in De Balie, naar aanleiding van zijn project Beards of Berlin. Laat je baard trimmen, terwijl je luistert naar coming-of-age verhalen over mannelijkheid, vriendschap en zelfexpressie.

We leven in een tijd waarin steeds meer mensen uit de beklemmende hokjes van man en vrouw breken. Tegelijkertijd zijn de patriarchale Jordan Peterson en Andrew Tate razend populair. Ook is er nog steeds hoge druk om te voldoen aan beklemmende schoonheidsidealen. Een lichaamsaccessoire dat altijd meebeweegt met ideeën over mannelijkheid is de baard.

Beards of Berlin

Gideon Querido van Frank interviewde mannen (cis, trans, non-binair; queer en hetero) aan de hand van hun baard over hoe zij zich verhouden tot hun lichaam, seksualiteit en hoe zij in verbinding staan met anderen. Dit resulteerde in kwetsbare gesprekken over opgroeien, schaamte en zelfexpressie. Fotograaf Elvin Boer ondersteunde deze verhalen met fotoportretten van de geïnterviewden.

When seeing violence, people rather look the other way, but in the theatre, we can be confronted with rage, aggression and violence intended to get our attention to relive a violent moment. How do artists perform plays on complex matters and with such extreme emotions, and what happens in the hearts and heads of the audience when they do?

During this programme, directors Lisaboa Houbrechts and Abdel Daoudi talk about the role violence plays in their work. Where do their boundaries lie in showing violence on stage? Furthermore, we will dive into the difference between art and entertainment when it comes to staging violence.

Before the conversation between the two directors, art critic and journalist Wieteke van Zeil will give an introduction about the way visual art has shown violence over the centuries.

Het kunstenaarskollektief ‘de (eerste) republiek’ wordt begin jaren negentig opgericht door een aantal amsterdamse toneelgezelschappen, dichters, journalisten en beeldend kunstenaars. Elke eerste maandag van de maand is er een presentatie waarin gelezen, voorgesteld, geinterviewd, gespeeld en over van alles gesproken wordt. In ons meer dan dertigjarige bestaan zijn we op veel plaatsen samengekomen om vanaf de jaren tien steeds in de balie aldaar post te vatten. Iedereen is ten allen tijde welkom. De republiek (open kunstenaarscollectief sinds 1992)

Pasgeleden kwam er onverwachts een nummer van Drake en The Weeknd uit – eveneens tot de grote verbazing van de artiesten zelf. Wat bleek, het nummer was gemaakt met behulp van Artificial Intelligence. Wat betekent deze technologische ontwikkeling voor de toekomst van de muziekindustrie: hebben we straks geen nieuwe artiesten meer nodig om goede muziek te maken? Of is dit eenzelfde soort ontwikkeling als de opkomst van drumcomputers en synthesizers in de jaren 80?

De afgelopen decennia hebben technologische ontwikkelingen de muziekindustrie ingrijpend veranderd. Op een manier heeft Spotify de wereldwijde muziekindustrie gered door stabiliteit in de markt te brengen. Daar droeg de technologische meerwaarde van de streamingdienst voor een groot deel aan bij – alle muziek ter wereld, met een druk op de knop binnen een milliseconde.

Nu kunnen we ons afvragen of de geavanceerde algoritmen om aanbevelingen te doen op basis van luistergeschiedenis niet afdoet aan muzikale diversiteit en de opkomst van nieuwe artiesten. Kunstmatige intelligentie zal net als andere technologische ontwikkelingen van grote invloed zijn op de wereld van muziek: maar hoe?
